Work With Older People

Work With Older People

Irene Gutheil

Fordham University Press
1994
pokkari
The increasing need for trained and knowledgeable service providers to work with the aging has been well documented in recent studies. Gutheil writes in her introduction, "growth in the number and proportion of older persons is one of the most dramatic and influential developments of this century, and we must anticipate and address the needs of this burgeoning older population. One anticipated result of the increasing numbers of older persons, especially the oldest old, is an unprecedented demand for support services for older people and their families." By bringing together practitioners and educators active in the field of elder care, this book examines current concerns and practice issues. Several topics now receiving considerable attention in the fields of aging and social work such as elder abuse, ethical issues in long-term care, the challenges of interdisciplinary teamwork, and the impact of our current economic environment on social agencies, are brought together for the first time in this volume. Timely chapters incorporate current thinking on concerns professionals struggle with on a daily basis. The chapters reflect the remarkable diversity of the challenges and opportunities in work with older people. Some of these challenges are frustrating, some invigorating – there are many opportunities for stimulating and gratifying practice. A valuable tool for both classroom use and for professionals in direct practice, the book contains two sections, the first provides foundation knowledge essential for work with older people and their families; the second examines current issues in the field of aging. There are the kinds of complex issues that confront professionals in social work, gerontology, counseling, and other fields with a commitment to serving older people and their families.

Chinese and Jews

Chinese and Jews

Irene Eber

The essays featured in this important book span an entire millennium, from the arrival of Jews to Chinese shores during the Tang Dynasty in the 9th Century to modern times, illuminating the fascinating encounters between the two cultures. The first part of the book deals with the arrival of Jews to China and their organisation and life in the remote and isolated community of Kaifeng, the settlement of Jews after the Opium War in the mid-nineteenth century and finally the story of the Jewish refugees who flocked to China to find a haven from Nazi persecution in the twentieth century. The second part reflects on the intellectual exchanges between Jews and their Chinese hosts, how the Jewish communities maintained their identity and how their respective cultures met and merged in surprising and powerful ways through scholarship, literary exchange, the translation of Chinese and Yiddish works and through religious reciprocation. Unique in its breadth and depth of analysis, Irene Eber's account of the intellectual and inter-cultural history of these two civilisations, at first sight so diverse, is of great value to scholars and general readers alike.
Chemical Analysis in the Laboratory

Chemical Analysis in the Laboratory

Often considered as a simple task, chemical analysis actually requires a variety of quite complex skills. As a practitioner in an interdisciplinary science, the analytical scientist is relied upon to have the knowledge and skill to help solve problems or to provide relevant information. They will need to think laterally, examine the process from sampling to final result carefully, in addition to selecting the appropriate technique in order to satisfy the objective and obtain a reliable result. The aim of this book is to provide basic training in the whole analytical process for students, demonstrating why analysis is necessary and how to take samples, before they attempt to carry out any analysis in the laboratory. Initially, planning of work, and collection and preparation of the sample are discussed in detail. This is followed by a look at issues of quality control and accreditation and the basic equipment (eg. balances, glassware) and techniques that are required. Throughout, safety issues are addressed, and examples and practical exercises are given. Chemical Analysis in the Laboratory: A Basic Guide will prove invaluable for students of chemistry, plant science, food science, biology, agriculture and soil science, providing them with a guide to the skills that will be required in the Analytical Laboratory. Teachers and lecturers will also find the material of assistance in developing the analytical thinking and skills of their students. New employees in analytical laboratories will welcome it as an indispensable guide.

History Of The Metropolitan RailwayMetro-Land

History Of The Metropolitan RailwayMetro-Land

Irene (Author) Hawkes

Crecy Publishing
2018
sidottu
It was in London in 1863 that the world's first metro was opened - the Metropolitan Railway. Built initially to overcome severe transport problems arising from London's huge growth in wealth and population, over the next 40 years it extended far beyond London's boundaries into the countryside of Middlesex, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. Generating income from house-building on land along the railway, the 'Met' - as it became known - fostered and developed the idea of an affordable home out of the city in lovely garden suburbs, with a fast train journey to work in London. It was the start of semidetached suburbanisation and was known as Metro-land. This new history examines how the Metropolitan Railway and the development of Metro-land went hand-in-hand until it was subsumed into the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933 and then nationalised in 1948. Packed with a wealth of detail, photographs, illustrations and contemporary advertising, it is above all revelatory to see how much has changed in social and transport terms since the 1930s, not least the price of a house!
