Alfred N. Hambrook was a stationer and printer whose shop in Snodland High Street served the community for around fifty years from 1901. His postcards of Snodland and district are well known. Together with his brother Percy he produced a great number of other views, especially in the first quarter of the century. 'H Bros S' (Hambrook Brothers, Snodland) identifies much of their work, often produced commercially for different villages or towns. This book concentrates on an area of mid Kent all within about a dozen miles of Snodland. Alfred was also general manager of Stedman & Co. in West Malling for a time. Hambrook and Stedman each contributed to the 'Kent Series' of coloured postcards from around 1905 and examples from the series are included in this book. Hambrook was a good photographer and his images show a way of life and a landscape now much changed by the trappings of modern society.

From the 1840s, with the development of steamships, there was a demand for day trips to the coast. Towns along the Thames and on the Essex and Kent coasts benefitted from the influx of trippers. Numerous companies, such as the Eagle and Belle steamers and the New Medway Steam Packet Co., catered for this tourist traffic. Towns such as Margate, Ramsgate, Herne Bay and Deal grew on the profits made from the excursionists. Andrew Gladwell follows up his By Steamer to the Essex Coast and looks at the resorts of Kent and the pleasure steamers that once sailed there. Steamers such as the Crested Eagle, Royal Daffodil, Medway Queen and, even today, the Waverley and Balmoral, were once a common sight at the piers and jetties of Kentish resorts. Looking at both the resorts themselves and the ships that plied there, Andrew Gladwell gives us a flavour of pleasure steamer day trips of a bygone era.

The very first issue of the - still current - magazine, The Autocar was on 2 November 1895. It gave three pages of coverage to The Horseless Carriage Exhibition organised by Sir David Salomons, the Mayor of Tunbridge Wells. Driving a horseless carriage on the highway was still illegal without a man walking in front, so even the assembling of a tangible proportion of the cars existing in the south east of England must have been very difficult. In the event four of the six exhibits listed appeared and it is here that the story of Motoring around Kent begins. Kent, the Garden of England, was also home to some well-known coachbuilders, including Martin Walter of Folkestone, who went on to make the famous Dormobile camper vans, and James Young, of Bromley, who bodied many a Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Covering the period up to and including the Second World War, the early years of Kentish motoring are told through a superb collection of images of motor vehicles and street scenes from this bygone age.
