A Chance to Say Goodbye

A Chance to Say Goodbye

Lisa J Shultz

High Country Publications

"Part tribute, part memoir, part guide, A Chance to Say Goodbye succeeds on all counts, with lyrical writing and thorough research. The book is divided into sections devoted to her father's life, reflections following his death, and resources for dealing with aging parents or preparing for one's own death- resources she desperately needed but didn't compile until after the fact." (Starred Review, BlueInk Review) "A Chance to Say Goodbye is a heartfelt, moving reminder that loving words are never wasted." (Foreword Clarion Reviews) Karen M. Wyatt MD, author of What Really Matters: 7 Lessons for Living from the Stories of the Dying, wrote the foreword to A Chance to Say Goodbye. She states, "This book can change our entire society for the better and allow everyone 'a chance to say goodbye' with those we love." Award winning author, Lisa J. Shultz, is of the Baby Boomer generation and lost her father, age 89 in 2015. She embraces a challenging and often avoided topic of facing the end-of-life stage of a loved one. With courage, vulnerability and love, she recounts her dad's storied life, including its difficult ending. Wrought with what she felt was unnecessary suffering in for all involved at the end, she strives to help others find a more peaceful final chapter of life. She begins her book by providing the background of her father, a World War II veteran. Their relationship was tenuous in Lisa's youth because she was disappointed and angered by his behavior, distancing herself from him and blaming him for the sudden end to their intact comfortable family life. As a young adult and after her father's sudden heart attack, Lisa was given a second chance to heal their relationship. Over the next three decades, they became closer, enjoying time together, including travel. When her dad entered his eighties, and while still raising her own children, Lisa found herself unprepared for his steady health decline. Suddenly, she was thrust into the role of overseeing his care as he began to experience increasing disability and the beginnings of dementia. Not having prepared for or anticipated such a role, Lisa floundered as she attempted to address his ever-changing situation. The closeness and healing they had achieved was challenged as her father resisted conversations about his failing health and his care, exacerbated by a western medical system that fell short to prepare them for the end of his life. After her father's death, Lisa began researching and compiling information aimed at educating and supporting others who may not be equipped for the challenges and decisions that arise when those we love begin to lose their health and mental clarity. The book also reminds us of our own mortality and inspires conversation and preparation to potentially ease the suffering for ourselves and those we leave behind. A moving tribute to a remarkable man and a daughter's experience of losing her dad, A Chance to Say Goodbye gives rise to reflections about what is important in living and dying.

From Giotto’s artistic revolution at the dawn of the fourteenth century to the scientific discoveries of Galileo in the early seventeenth, this book explores the cultural developments of one of the most remarkable and vibrant periods of history—the Italian Renaissance. What makes the period all the more amazing is that this flowering of the visual arts, literature, and philosophy occurred against a turbulent backdrop of civic factionalism, foreign invasions, war, and pestilence. The fifteen chapters move briskly from the Fall of the Roman Empire in the West through the growth of the Italian city-states, where, in the crucible of pandemic disease and social unrest, a new approach to learning known as humanism was forged, political and religious certainties challenged. Traversing the entire Italian Peninsula— Florence, Rome, Milan, Venice, Naples and Sicily—this book examines the rich regional diversity of Renaissance cultural experience and considers men’s and women’s lives, their changing social attitudes and beliefs across three centuries. This second edition has been updated throughout; it now contains dozens of color images and timelines, as well as links to the author's new companion book of primary sources, Voices from the Italian Renaissance.Readers will need no preliminary background on the subject matter, as the story is told in a lively, readable narrative. Interdisciplinary in nature, its characters are merchants, bankers, artists, saints, soldiers of fortune, poets, popes, and courtesans. With brief literary excerpts, first-hand accounts, maps, and illustrations that help bring the era to life, this is an ideal text for students in a college survey course, as well as for the interested general reader or traveler to Italy who is curious to learn more about the extraordinary heritage of the Renaissance.

'A truly helpful, honest, and important trail map for the journey we all eventually must take through grief' - Steve Leder, New York Times bestselling author of The Beauty of What Remains'An immense amount of knowledge and science around grief and the grieving process' - Colin Campbell, author of Finding the WordsWhen social worker Lisa Keefauver became a widow in 2011, she was alarmed to discover that even though 100 percent of us experience loss, we're living in a grief illiterate world. In her work as a therapist, and in her search for help in the wake of her own loss, Keefauver began to see how the misguided stories we consume about grief lead to unnecessary suffering. Responding to the problematic narratives that grief is something to move on from after completing the five stages like some sort of to-do list, Keefauver became a grief activist. Through this book and her hit podcast of the same title, she creates a safe place to be inside the messiness of it all, to discover the full spectrum of grief, and to find the tools that help grievers move forward, not on. Grief is a Sneaky Bitch is a comprehensive guide-both a manual full of insights and skills and, even more importantly, a thoughtful companion that helps readers feel seen and held. Keefauver shares her personal and professional wisdom alongside the lessons she's learned from clinicians, authors, poets, and friends. In place of rigid instructions and must-do checklists, Grief is a Sneaky Bitch invites reflection, encourages self-compassion and explores the therapeutic power of humour with, yes, a bit of profanity.

A Matter of Perspective: A Philosophical and Poetic View of Life, Death, and Relationships
A Matter of Perspective: A Philosophical and Poetic View of Life, Death, and Relationships is an in depth and uniquely rich text which captures the essence of real life experiences. In this book the author introduces the reader to a series of multiple perspectives regarding views on life, death and how relationships are interpreted through the use of poetic elements. The author uses metaphor and simile to evoke a sense of urgency when comparing the human spirit to a given event in life. By incorporating allusion, alliteration, repetition and rhyme scheme in various poems, the author is able to evoke a sense of tone and mood which emerges from the very pages in the text. The author uses a series of explanations to provide a basis for each poem. The author's interpretation of life, death and relationships is premise of this book and provides a fundamental purity to the purpose for each excerpt. According to the author, the concept of poetry or poetic effect is not centered solely on rhyming. Poetry is based on purpose and meaning. There is an obvious message in which the author wants to convey to help the reader appreciate the context of each of the three sections in the book: life, death, and relationships and how each of these aforementioned elements are intertwined. As haunting and unnerving as this text may appear, the purpose is to make a direct statement about how we interpret the world around us as human beings based on everyday situations and experiences.
