Few artists saw World War II from as many perspectives as El Paso artist and writer Tom Lea. Commissioned by ""Life"" magazine to paint the war as it was being experienced by U.S. and Allied troops, Lea went aboard a Navy destroyer in the North Atlantic to cover the fight against the German U-boats in late 1941; was on the carrier Hornet days before its sinking during the desperate air and sea battles off Guadalcanal in 1942; recorded the struggles of Army Air Forces transport, fighter, and bomber crews in England, North Africa, and China in 1943; and hit the bloody beaches at Peleliu with the assault waves of the 7th Marines in 1944. He was preparing to join forces poised to invade the home islands when the Japanese surrendered in 1945.In ""The Two Thousand Yard Stare"", Brendan M. Greeley Jr. has collected virtually all of Tom Lea's firsthand written accounts of his assignments for ""Life"", including a previously unpublished diary and letters to fellow Texas writer J. Frank Dobie, along with Lea's powerful sketches and unforgettable paintings. Greeley places them in context, along with photographs and informative details on the people, places, and wartime events encountered by Tom Lea.Thoroughly documented and filled with telling illustrations, this book will leave a stunning impression on those interested in the realistic depiction of war, in both images and words. Also a must-read for students, scholars, and collectors of Tom Lea's work, ""The Two Thousand Yard Stare"" brilliantly captures the artistic skills and spirit of one of America's most compelling painters and writers.

An anthology that explores all facets of the Black Arts Movement. Edited by Dr. Kim McMillon and Kofi Antwi. Foreword by Ishmael Reed. Introduction by Dr. Margo Natalie Crawford. This anthology, nearly 60 years in the making, features over 100 poets and writers on the theme of "Black is Beautiful, Black is Powerful, Black is Home." Exploring the past, present and future of Black writing, this collection bridges many of the founders of the Black Arts Movement-including Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, Haki Madhubuti, Amiri Baraka, Wanda Coleman, Dudley Randall, Eugene B. Redmond and Askia Tour -with contemporary established writers in the tradition such as brian g. gilmore-to Ishmael Reed's "younger generation"-Karla Brundage, Allison E. Francis, Tongo Eisen-Martin and C. Liegh McInnis. Designed as an open conversation between generations bridging hearts and minds across decades, Black Fire-This Time's works are rooted in preservation, reverence and discovery. Several little-known works are included for the first time. New works-from established writers as well as emerging talent-share this historic debut. Black Fire-This Time also stands out for its inclusion of many voices that were underrepresented in previous anthologies, most notably Black Fire: an anthology of Afro-American Writing (1968) and its ancestor, The New Negro (1920). The works of writers such as Nikki Giovanni and James Baldwin provide a more complete view of the myriad perspectives on Black identity and writing.
After many years of serving the country and doing his part to help rebuild South Africa, Dr Peter Friedland was given an opportunity to serve as a member of Nelson Mandela’s medical team and helped to monitor his hearing. Over the years they built a rapport and their conversations regularly veered towards politics. Mandela often gave Peter perspective and would push him to examine his reasons for supporting specific causes and holding particular views. As an ENT specialist, Peter regularly treated victims of violent crime. He also lost colleagues and friends to hijackings and other crimes. But when his daughters were exposed to a robbery, he had to make a life-changing decision. This book examines the powerful forces that push people away from South Africa and those that pull them back in. It is never as simple as merely staying or going – it is an emotional tug of war that continues until something snaps. Through many conversations had with Mandela and lessons he learnt from his life, Peter worked through some of his PTSD, his fears and the deep sense of hopelessness he felt as he came to terms with his decision to emigrate to Australia. His story beautifully captures the tension between an uncertain future that is out of your control and the fear that you might not survive.

This cruising guide is a proven reference for safe navigation of the challenges for travel along the US Pacific Coast. It clearly describes the choices of routes for travel along the coast: harbor-hopping, inshore and offshore routes and discusses weather, crossing bars and safety issues. A safe approach to all major facilities is described and sketched in detail as well as the anchorages in the Channel Islands. Many cruisers have found the detailed information invaluable when approaching both planned stop-overs or when making an unexpected approach to the coast as a result of engine or equipment failure or a health emergency. Detailed drawings of marina facilities takes the worry out of approaching an unfamiliar marina especially if the crew is fatigued following a tiring spell at sea. GPS waypoints on each page are intended to assist a cruiser to locate offshore approach buoys and avoid reefs, points and capes by a safe margin. Waypoints are not given following the channel into marinas since channel markers are regularly moved to indicate the best water as a result of constant shoaling and scouring. This 6th edition is filled with QR codes, providing added information such as riverbar cameras, tide tables, weather cams, informational links to harbor websites and the like. The use of thse QR codes is not required to use the guide, but provide additional information to the cruiser when within cell phone coverage. The codes can be scanned by a smart phone or iPad.

K. Michael Marquardt, Master Mariner

It is divided into eight sections with full-color photographs and a sketched chart indicating marinas or anchorages where a cruising boat can find moorage as it travels along the coast. Each location has a detailed sketch and description of a safe approach, recommended anchorages and shore facilities. Crucial portions such as the transit of passes and the passage of Cape Caution are given particular attention with guidelines for timing and recommended routes. A customized weather map provides excellent information. For cruisers unable to make the entire trip to Alaska shorter trips to spectacular areas on the coast are described such as to Princess Louisa Inlet, Desolation Sound, Broughton Archipelago, Fiordland Recreation Area, Kitimat and the Kitlope.
This guide has a detailed sketch of all anchorages and marina facilities in the Hawaiian Islands. The introduction discusses significant topics such as weather, navigation, provisioning, entry procedures, pets, radio communication and diving. The Appendices include a chart list, weather forecasts a list of Wx and Fax frequencies and a beautifully illustrated marine animal identification guide of turtles, whales and sharks found in coastal waters. "Charlie's Charts are probably the most used guides to Mexico, Costa Rica, Hawaii and Polynesia. No cruiser worth his salt would depart for a cruise in those areas without them." Bob Bitchin, Publisher/Editor of Latitudes and Attitudes

American schoolteaching is one of few occupations to have undergone a thorough gender shift yet previous explanations have neglected a key feature of the transition: its regional character. By the early 1800s, far higher proportions of women were teaching in the Northeast than in the South, and this regional difference was reproduced as settlers moved West before the Civil War. What explains the creation of these divergent regional arrangements in the East, their recreation in the West, and their eventual disappearance by the next century? In Women's Work the authors blend newly available quantitative evidence with historical narrative to show that distinctive regional school structures and related cultural patterns account for the initial regional difference, while a growing recognition that women could handle the work after they temporarily replaced men during the Civil War helps explain this widespread shift to female teachers later in the century. Yet despite this shift, a significant gender gap in pay and positions remained. This book offers an original and thought-provoking account of a remarkable historical transition.
Mexican Americans are rapidly becoming the largest minority in the United States, playing a vital role in the culture of the American Southwest and beyond. This A-to-Z guide offers comprehensive coverage of the Mexican American experience. Entries range from figures such as Corky Gonzales, Joan Baez, and Nancy Lopez to general entries on bilingual education, assimilation, border culture, and southwestern agriculture. Court cases, politics, and events such as the Delano Grape Strike all receive full coverage, while the definitions and significance of terms such as coyote and Tejano are provided in shorter entries.Taking a historical approach, this book's topics date back to the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, a radical turning point for Mexican Americans, as they lost their lands and found themselves thrust into an alien social and legal system. The entries trace Mexican Americans' experience as a small, conquered minority, their growing influence in the 20th century, and the essential roles their culture plays in the borderlands, or the American Southwest, in the 21st century.

Families of children with special health needs frequently cite difficulties in their communications with physicians and other medical professionals. Indeed, parents of high-risk, chronically ill, and disabled infants often regard interactions with health care providers as one of the most stressful parts of their early experiences with their children. This volume was designed to present a variety of medical education approaches used to overcome this problem. After providing an overview of some of the difficulties faced by physicians and families of children with special health needs in their interactions with one another, the volume examines a number of useful medical education models. The models and viewpoints presented include those of physicians, early intervention professionals, professionals with backgrounds in education, psychology, and sociology, and parents. This volume is invaluable to those involved in designing and evaluating medical education approaches, and those developing public policy for children and the family.
