Mary Dove

Mary Dove

Jane Gilmore Rushing

Texas Tech Press,U.S.
2003
nidottu
Reared in isolation by her father on the Western prairie, Mary Dove has been taught to fear only one thing. One sparkling October day it happens. The inevitable stranger rides in off the plains, and Mary Dove does what she had always promised her father she would she shoots. Yet compassion overcomes Mary's fear. In remorse, she tends to the wounded stranger, and what follows is their tentative discovery of each other and a love story that weaves universal and timeless themes. The mother who died before Mary Dove could know her was African-American. And so completely has Mary Dove's father sheltered her that she cannot begin to comprehend what society would so cruelly teach her. Archetypal in their blamelessness and in how deeply they must suffer for their love, Mary Dove and her cowboy, 'Red' Christopher Columbus Jones, are so thoroughly West Texan that they prove Rushing's mastery of character and place. 'Get away', she said 'Now I ain't gonna hurt you', he said, 'and I don't want to know nothing about you that you don't want to tell'. He came a step closer. 'Stop right now', she said, 'or I'll shoot'. 'You wouldn't', he said. He was so nearly right. She believed what he said or nearly. But she had been afraid so long. And wasn't it a law of God to do what your father said? She trembled, looking into his smiling blue eyes. It would have been easier if he had been preparing to pounce, like the panther, or striking, like the snake. The rifle barrel dropped, a little. 'I knew you wouldn't', he said, taking another step towards her. 'I have to', she said, and with a terrible struggle to hold the gun steady, she fired. Jane Gilmore Rushing was born in Pyron, Texas, near Snyder, and spent most of her life in West Texas. She wrote six other novels, was a distinguished alumna of Texas Tech University, and was a member of Texas Institute of Letters. She received the LeBaron R. Barker Jr. Prize in 1975 for ""Mary Dove"" and the Texas Literary Award for Fiction in 1984 for ""Winds of Blame"".

One of 101 titles in the St. Joseph Picture Book Series, this book by popular author Father Lovasik, S.V.D. provides children with simple explanations of the life of Mary, Mother of God. Mary, the mother of Jesus, plays a very important role in the New Testament and is an inspiring example for all of us. Chosen by God to bring His Son, Jesus, into the world, Mary shows us the power of saying "yes" to God's plan, even when it seems challenging or hard to understand. When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, telling her she would be the mother of Jesus, Mary was surprised but said, "Let it be done to me according to your word." This "yes" is known as her Fiat. Mary's trust and obedience to God show us how we can have faith in His plans, even if we don't see the full picture. Mary was also present during many important events in Jesus's life. She cared for Him as He grew up, was there at His first miracle at the wedding at Cana, and stood by Him during His crucifixion. This shows us her deep love and loyalty. Mary teaches us to be faithful, patient, and compassionate. She also helps us learn to trust in God's love. Catholics honor Mary and ask her to pray for us because she is so close to Jesus. Mary's life reminds us that God's love is always with us and that we, too, can follow Jesus by being kind, loving, and trusting God's plans. Discreetness - A compact book can be read in public or private without drawing much attention, making it ideal for personal reflection or study. Durability - Smaller books often have sturdier bindings and covers, allowing them to withstand frequent handling and travel. Efficiency - Concise and well-organized content ensures that the reader gets essential information without unnecessary bulk, making learning or devotion more focused and effective. Mary, the Mother of Hope, holds a special place in Catholic faith as a symbol of trust in God's promises. Her unwavering faith, from the Annunciation to the Crucifixion, exemplifies a deep reliance on divine providence. Catholics look to Mary as a model of hope, particularly in times of suffering and uncertainty. At the Annunciation, Mary's "yes" to God (Luke 1:38) set the course for salvation history. Despite the unknowns, she trusted in God's plan. At the foot of the Cross, she endured immense sorrow but remained steadfast, believing in God's victory over death. Her hope was fulfilled in the Resurrection, reinforcing the Christian belief that God's promises never fail. Catholics turn to Mary for intercession, especially under titles like Our Lady of Hope. Shrines, such as Pontmain in France, commemorate her role in inspiring hope during times of war and distress. The Rosary, particularly the Joyful and Glorious Mysteries, reflects on Mary's journey of hope. Pope Benedict XVI called Mary the "Star of Hope," guiding believers toward Christ. Her life teaches that true hope is rooted in faith, not worldly security. In Mary, Catholics find a mother who nurtures hope, encouraging them to trust God's love even in life's darkest moments. Chapter Titles Include: Liturgical Feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary Prayers of the Saints to Our Lady Special Devotions to Mary General Prayers Scriptural Rosary
Mary Ward (1585-1645): `A Briefe Relation', with Autobiographical Fragments and a Selection of Letters
Biography of, and writings by, Mary Ward, the founder of the Congregation of Jesus, still in existence today. Mary Ward, one of the most interesting and attractive figures in early modern history, was born in Yorkshire during a period of relentless persecution for English Catholics. At a time when strict enclosure was prescribed for religious orders of women, she felt called by God to found a new congregation, modelled on the Society of Jesus: self-governing, unenclosed, and available for apostolic work worldwide, including the support of priests on the dangerousEnglish Mission. Whether engaged in travel by sea and long, mountainous journeys, or planning with supportive Catholic princes for the education of girls, or pleading her cause in person before popes and cardinals, Mary remained courageous and light-hearted, a woman of deep faith. But she was in advance of her time; her congregation was harshly suppressed by Papal Bull, while she herself suffered imprisonment as a heretic by the Inquisition, and remained under its perpetual surveillance. This book, published to mark the four-hundred year jubilee of the foundation of Mary Ward's congregation in 1609, contains the earliest biography [c.1650] of Mary Ward and other source texts, hitherto available only in manuscripts kept in private archives. Introductions and notes have been added to set the texts in context. CHRISTINA KENWORTHY-BROWNE, a member of Mary Ward's Congregation of Jesus, is the Archivist and Librarian at the Bar Convent, York.

"I think we could possible fix that. Well, sort of.""What do you mean, Helen?"I had one arm around her neck and my other arm and hand rested on her large thigh. Then I gently turned the hand over and began to rub her thigh through her skirt. I drew Mary's head towards mine, and, lifting my hand from her thigh, I turned her face towards me. Mary's still wet eyes focused on my face and I smiled lovingly at her. Then I put my lips on hers, knowing that this could be a terrible mistake.I left my lips on hers. She didn't immediately respond, but at least she hadn't pulled away. I was ready to retreat and remove my lips, when suddenly Mary pushed back at me with her mouth, gently. I waited a moment, wanting to give her some space. Then she pushed at me harder.I put my hand behind her head and pulled it slowly towards me while increasing the pressure on her lips. Then I took a risk and pushed my tongue into her mouth, just a tiny distance, and moved it slowly, side to side. All of her body shook and as it subsided, I realised that Mary was experiencing a huge emotional release. But there must still have been some tension remaining. I could feel her looking for something, something more, looking for what I might do next. I decided to take another risk.I unbuttoned my blouse. I was without a bra and I felt the cool air on my breasts. I picked up Mary's right hand and slowly placed it inside my blouse and waited. I felt Mary shaking and gasping as she hurriedly moved her hand around, feeling my skin and discovering a nipple. And while she was doing that, she picked up my spare hand and placed it against the exposed skin of her large bosom, and I gratefully slid my hand down inside her top. I too found a nipple and I too, gasped and sighed. Then Mary began to moan and moved her mouth around on mine, and we both tongued each other."I want to help you get through this, Mary my darling. Please let me make love to you?"I only had to wait a second or two before she answered."Oh yes, Helen, please, please make love to me. Sophie stood tall on a pair of high heels that she had gone shopping for with Mary the day before. Her stockings were a delightful smoky grey and she wore a shortish but conservative pleated skirt and a blouse buttoned to a frilly lace collar. Her face still wore that naive expression that I noticed when first we met, but there was something else going on suggesting a not-so-innocent state of mind."Hello Sophie, and welcome."Before I could say another word, Sophie crossed the room and threw her arms around me and fastened her mouth on mine. I slipped my arms around her and pushed back on her lips; then her mouth opened and she put out her tongue and explored my now open mouth. We stood like that for a few minutes, then I slid my hand down her back and lightly felt her backside. We eventually separated our mouths and Sophie smiled. "Auntie said it would be best if I kissed you straight away, then I wouldn't be so nervous."I laughed and turned her towards the bed, and we sat down."Dearest Mary Did her advice work, Sophie? You're no longer nervous, I hope?""Yes, Helen, I feel relaxed with you now. Do you like my shoes?""Good Yes, I love your shoes. I do have a bit of a shoe and foot fetish. Now Sophie, can I please do something, so that I won't feel nervous?"Sophie looked at me with eyes shining. "Anything " she whispered.I slowly unbuttoned my blouse right the way down and pulled it open, then I took Sophie's hand and drew it over my bosom and rubbed her fingers lightly on my bare breast. The EROS CRESCENT novels take you on a journey like no other - to places you couldn't imagine - a female friendly sex club or a privately owned members-only dogging venue; the toy-boy life of a writer working on the Amalfi coast and much much more. MARY and the other novellas - JESSICA, MARIA, HELEN, JANICE and THE CLUB - are extracts taken from The Fifi Code, Eros Crescent and Mount Eros.

Mary's Message for A New Day

In the twentieth century alone, more than two hundred appearances of Mary, the mother of Jesus, have been reported in over thirty countries. Some claim Mary has appeared to them as they pray. Others say they have watched her statues "weep" or have seen her images on walls or windows. And some tell us that Mary has revealed to them urgent prophecies and secrets. Mary has entrusted her messages to unlikely ambassadors--not prelates or popes, presidents or politicians, but children and simple folk, innocent ones who could receive her messages in humility and convey them with undiluted simplicity. For forty years Mother Mary gave messages through Mark and Elizabeth Prophet to comfort and enlighten spiritual seekers of all paths. This groundbreaking book records Mary's precious messages of wisdom, hope and peace to a troubled world. It also includes the text of eight nondenominational scriptural rosaries--one for each day of the week and Sunday evening.

Many have told the tragic tale of Mary Queen of Scots - it is irresistible - but none more powerfully than Friedrich Schiller. Like Mary Stuart herself and the legends which pursued her to her death, Schiller's drama continues to captivate the modern imagination nearly two centuries later. Eric Bentley's lean, forceful rendering of the German masterpiece will command the attention of theatre audiences for years to come.
Mary Olivier: A Life

Mary Olivier: A Life

May Sinclair

New York Review of Books

Originally published alongside Ulysses in the pages of the legendary Little Review, Mary Olivier: A Life is an intimate, lacerating account of the ties between daughter and mother, a book of transfixing images and troubling moral intelligence that confronts the exigencies and ambiguities of freedom and responsibility with empathy and power. May Sinclair's finest novel stands comparison with the work of Willa Cather, Katherine Mansfield, and the young Virginia Woolf. As a child, Mary Olivier's dreamy disposition and fierce intelligence set her apart from her Victorian family, especially her mother, "Little Mamma," whose dazzling looks cannot hide her meager love for her only daughter. Mary grows up in a world of her own, a solitude that leaves her free to explore her deepest passions, for literature and philosophy, for the austere beauties of England's north country, even as she continues to attend to her family. But in time the independence Mary values--at almost any cost--threatens to become a form of captivity itself.

Born into the plantation gentry of South Carolina, granted the advantages of wealth, social position, and education by virtue of her family and her marriage to another prominent South Carolina family, Mary Chesnut has emerged as one of the key figures in American history, but not because of a career, her family, or her involvement in a humanitarian cause. Rather, Chesnut's significance comes from her extensive diary. Her commentary and reminiscences about the Confederate era provide an excellent window into the life and death of the Confederate nation. Her keen insight into political, economic, and social developments makes her an excellent source to understand the Southern homefront during the Civil War. Professor DeCredico uses Chesnut's life to address the role of women in the South, the ideology and leadership of the Southern white elite, and how Southern women in general—and Chesnut in particular—viewed the institution of slavery. Furthermore, DeCredico shows how Mary Chesnut's privileged position gave her an ideal perspective for observing and commenting on the events of the Confederacy.
