New Essays on the Short Stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s status as an artist rests as much on The Scarlet Letter as on his short fictions. It is both telling and appropriate that academic research in the short story should be dated to Mary Rohrberger’s study Hawthorne and the Modern Short Story, published in 1966. The present volume adds to this discourse with contributions by Paulina Ambrozy, Katarzyna Kuczma, Joseph Kuhn, David Malcolm, Marek Paryz, Janusz Semrau, Pawel Stachura, and Marek Wilczynski. Represented here are some of the most widely-known stories, such as «My Kinsman, Major Molineux», «Wakefield», «Roger Malvin’s Burial», «Ethan Brand», «The Great Stone Face», and some of the less widely-known ones, such as «Legends of the Province-House», «The Haunted Mind», «The Threefold Destiny», «Foot-prints on the Sea-shore». The individual essays discuss Hawthorne’s texts in quasi-generic terms, through some persistent American themes and motifs, as well as for their aesthetic, philosophical, and existential meanings. The readings draw ideological and theoretical support from the thought of Emerson, Hegel, Trilling, de Certeau, Freud, Heidegger, Lacan, and Derrida.
Records of the descendants of Nathaniel Ely, the emigrant, who settled first in Newtown, now Cambridge, Mass., was one of the first settlers of Hartford, also of Norwalk, Conn., and a resident of Springfield, Mass., from 1659 until his death in 1675

The Life of the Reverend Nathaniel Henry Boston (1854–1917) Through Sierra Leone History
A biography of the life of the Reverend Nathaniel Henry Boston. His direct ancestors had been captured during the transatlantic slave trade and later liberated at Freetown, the capital of the former British Colony of Sierra Leone. A lengthy introduction explores how his ancestors ended up there. Both Nathaniel and his father Henry were employed in Sierra Leone during the Nineteenth century by the Church Missionary Society with headquarters in England. As such, they were required to send annual reports of their work to their employers in England. Through researching their correspondence with the CMS, including letters in their own handwriting, the author relates a fascinating account of their lives from documents kept at the CMS archives and old colonial newspapers from the Sierra Leone Archives and the British Library. The book also tells the history of Sierra Leone during this time. First is given a biography of Henry Boston. The book then goes on to describe Nathaniel’s childhood, his missionary Journey, his graduation, marriage, his challenges and his death in 1917. It also tells the country’s history in detail between these dates. Finally, it describes the legacy of Nathaniel and his children. Nathaniel is the author’s great grandfather.
