Dissociation and Wholeness in Patrick White's Fiction
Laurence Steven
Wilfrid Laurier University Press
1989
nidottu
Most studies of Patrick White's fiction are devoted to elucidating archetypal patterns, symbolic configurations, and thematic preoccupations, and generally to praising the way White's fictional elements combine to form a religio-mystical worldview.Few have questioned this critical approach to White; fewer still have questioned White's vision itself. Yet, according to the author, questioning is in order - for Patrick White is a man divided. One part of him strives for permanence, for the ideal, in a world he knows is contingent and temporal, a world that will undermine his striving. This leads him as a novelist to devalue human life and to impose arbitrary, symbolic resolutions on his novels. This has been the focus of most critics. But there is another side, a part of White that strains away from the dualism of idealism versus despair and towards a vital wholeness that can be found, not in a world beyond the one we live in, but in human relationships. It is this side of Patrick White, argues Laurence Steven, that is the source of his genuine power as a novelist. An important challenge for the critic is ""to develop an ability to see, within the restrictive compass [White's] symbolic designs impose on the novels, 'the new shoots,' as [D. H.] Lawrence would have it, which indicate new life, new creativity, and which point towards a wholeness which human beings can embrace as their own"" (Introduction).

"In her study of the turbulent imagination of this turbulent man, Una Agnew has succeeded in unveiling the still centre. In doing this she has placed us all in her debt." The Irish Times The poetry of Patrick Kavanagh offers a radical affirmation not only of the human condition, but of the natural world and of God’s presence in both the majestic and mundane facets of daily life. In this illuminating landmark study of the great Monaghan sage, Una Agnew situates Kavanagh’s life and writings squarely in the tradition of Christian mysticism, exploring how his intensely earthy and accessible poems celebrate the presence of the divine ‘in the bits and pieces of everyday’. By examining Kavanagh’s work with an emphasis on three core themes central to an understanding of mysticism – awakening, purification and illumination – the author makes a compelling case for the inextricable link between the sacred and the commonplace in Kavanagh’s singular worldview. Despite his many personal setbacks, from poverty to rejection to serious illness, Kavanagh, as this study so beautifully illustrates, remained in thrall to the world that surrounded him and, even at his most abject, his mystical imagination remained undimmed. In the words of poet Mary O’Donnell in the foreword to this new edition of The Mystical Imagination of Patrick Kavanagh, Una Agnew’s ‘penetrating study of [Kavanagh’s] work … brings discussion of this most significant twentieth-century poet to renewed levels of insight.’
Patrick Caulfield was a student at the Royal College of Art between 1960-63 alongside David Hockney and Allen Jones. His subject matter draws more from the masters of modern art such as Braque and Gris than from the consumer culture that preoccupied his fellow students. His work is characterised by a reductive, streamlined use of line and the depiction of banal, everyday objects saturated in colour. Caulfield consistently used screenprint for his graphic work following his introduction to the medium by Richard Hamilton and Chris Prater in 1964. The deceptive simplicity of his images, perfectly matched by the aesthetic capacities of the process, is clear throughout the various phases of his printmaking career. During his lifetime the Serpentine Gallery, the Hayward Gallery and the Tate Gallery in London all held major retrospectives of his paintings. More recently his prints were the subject of a survey at Tate Liverpool. Caulfield died in 2005 having made an indelible contribution to British painting and printmaking.
