Peter the Venerable and Islam

Peter the Venerable and Islam

sidottu
For over four centuries the principal source of Christian European knowledge of Islam stemmed from a project sponsored by Peter the Venerable, ninth abbot of Cluny, in 1142. This consisted of Latin translations of five Arabic works, including the first translation of the Koran in a western language. Known as the Toledan Collection, it was eventually printed in 1543 with an introduction by Martin Luther. The abbot also completed a handbook of Islam beliefs and a major analytical and polemical work, Liber contra sectam Saracenorum; annotated editions of these texts are included in this book. Originally published in 1964. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
Peter's Special Concoction: How a Little Boy Learned to Manage Type 1 Diabetes
Peter was just a little boy when he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He was scared of having his blood checked and fearful of the insulin injections. Peter thought about his special skills and developed several strategies he can use to cope with the injections and other challenges he will face. These are strategies anyone can use, child or adult, who is in a similar situation and needs to find an effective way to cope.
Peter Pan (with Original Illustrations and Vocabulary Notes)
J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan is one of the best loved, and most powerfully moving tales ever written for children. The high-spirited and wily adventures of the boy who would never grow up are as stirring a fantasy as any written, while Barrie's reflections on the nature of age, memory, and time, offer wise and memorable insights into human nature. This edition includes Barrie's original novel along with two sets of classic illustrations, F.D. Bedford's elaborate engravings from the the first edition, as well as the whimsical drawings of Oliver Herford from The Peter Pan Alphabet, authorized by Barrie himself. Both sets provide a beautiful and dramatic visual compliment to this timeless story of innocence and maturity, fairies and pirates. Also included are vocabulary notes for many words and phrases that may be unfamiliar to today's young readers.
Peter Schneider

Peter Schneider is a seminal figure in contemporary German writing. Initially prominent for his involvement in the student movement, he has consistently focused on problems at the heart of German national and cultural identity: the legacy of Auschwitz, the student revolt, neo-Nazi violence, the Green movement, and, above all, the division and subsequent unification of Germany. From the influential "Lenz"""(1973) to the challenging yet accessible "Paarungen "(1992), Schneider's fiction and essays bring meticulous intellectual analysis to what he himself describes as a neglected 'deutsche Tradition von Ironie, Leichtigkeit, Humor'. The first book in English or German to be devoted exclusively to Peter Schneider, this collection of essays is intended both as an introduction for the general reader and as a resource for the specialist. It contains a previously unpublished piece by Schneider, together with a revealing interview and a biographical sketch. The contributions on various aspects of the author's fiction and essays are complemented by the fullest bibliography to date of Schneider's primary works as well as a select list of secondary sources.

This is a double volume dedicated to two masterpieces by Benjamin Britten. While Peter Grimes established Britten as a composer of international standing, Gloriana, composed for the coronation of Elizabeth II, has never enjoyed a comparable fame. The variety of mood, characterization and pace, in each, illustrates Britten’s exceptional gift for theatre. Commentaries on the scores reveal, for instance, how much the popular concert extracts gain from their context in the dramas. The essay by E.M. Forster – the inspiration for Peter Grimes – is reprinted here, and Michael Holroyd discusses Lytton Strachey’s controversial Elizabeth and Essex – the source for Gloriana.Contents: Benjamin Britten’s Librettos, Peter Porter; George Crabbe: The Poet and the Man, E.M. Forster; ‘Peter Grimes’: A Musical Commentary, Stephen Walsh; Peter Grimes: Libretto by Montagu Slater; ‘Peter Grimes’ and ‘Gloriana’, Joan Cross, Peter Pears and John Evans; Some Reflections on the Operas of Benjamin Britten, Buxton Orr; ‘A daring experiment’, Michael Holroyd; The Librettist of ‘Gloriana’, Rupert Hart-Davis; The Music of ‘Gloriana’, Christopher Palmer; Notes on the Libretto of ‘Gloriana’, William Plomer; Gloriana: Libretto by William Plomer

Raised in Canada and now living in Trinidad, during the two decades he spent in London Peter Doig (b. 1959) emerged as one of Britain’s most influential painters. Bringing together disparate visual references in an otherworldly visual space, Doig’s artworks never the less belong to a landscape painting tradition that dates back to the nineteenth century. His visionary canvases, with their hallucinogenic colours and heavily textured surfaces, have helped spark contemporary art's resurgent interest in idiosyncratic figurative painting.Peter Doig is represented by Victoria Miro, London; Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin; Michael Werner, New York; and Gavin Brown, New York.

A finger puppet book featuring Beatrix Potter's classic character, Peter Rabbit! This simple counting book with a soft finger puppet of Peter Rabbit will really help adults to bring the pages alive. The Peter Rabbit puppet is cleverly stitched into the book so it can't get lost, and is integral to every page! A great fun read to share with very young children. Beatrix Potter is regarded as one of the world's best-loved children's authors of all time. From her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, published by Frederick Warne in 1902, she went on to create a series of stories based around animal characters including Mrs.Tiggy-winkle, Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-duck, Mr. Jeremy Fisher and Tom Kitten. Her humorous, lively tales and beautiful illustrations have become a natural part of childhood. From the revenue from the sales of her books, Beatrix Potter bought a farm - Hill Top - in the English Lake District, where she later became a farmer and prize-winning sheep breeder. She launched the now vast merchandise programme by patenting the very first Peter Rabbit doll in 1903. The product range continues to grow today with licences around the world including baby clothing and bedding, nursery decor products and collectables. Upon her death, Beatrix Potter left 14 farms and over 4000 acres of Lake District farmland to the National Trust so that the place that she loved would remain undeveloped and protected for future generations to enjoy. Today Beatrix Potter's original 23 tales are still published by Frederick Warne, alongside a wide range of other formats including baby books, activity books and gift and sound books. Look out for Beatrix Potter's original series of classic tales, published by Warne: 1 The Tale of Peter Rabbit 2 The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin 3 The Tailor of Gloucester 4 The Tale of Benjamin Bunny 5 The Tale of Two Bad Mice 6 The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle 7 The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher 8 The Tale of Tom Kitten 9 The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck 10 The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies 11 The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse 12 The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes 13 The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse 14 The Tale of Mr. Tod 15 The Tale of Pigling Bland 16 The Tale of Samuel Whiskers 17 The Tale of The Pie and the Patty-Pan 18 The Tale of Ginger and Pickles 19 The Tale of Little Pig Robinson 20 The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit 21 The Story of Miss Moppet 22 Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes 23 Cecily Parsley's Nursery Rhymes
