Conditions aboard ship can be brutal for some mariners, especially those from Third World countries working on substandard ships. Roberto Tiangco discovered this firsthand when he volunteered to help at the Halifax, Canada, Mission to Seafarers. He became concerned, and then angry, about the many commonly occurring difficulties faced by mariners on substandard ships. This book, written by Tiangco and Russ Jackson, addresses the problems and provides a comprehensive approach to their solution. A self-help guide, the book presents information in plain English about recruitment, employment contracts, wages, living conditions, work environment, health and medical care, repatriation, abandonment, and accidents. Graphic examples taken from Roberto Tiangco’s experience at the Mission to Seafarers and from various seafaring publications are recounted, allowing mariners to identify with the issues involved. For example, they can imagine (if they had not already experienced it) being told there was no clean bedding or towels aboard ship or that the crew must fish for their food; they can envision discovering that all the toilets and showers are inoperable for the length of a voyage. The national and international laws applicable to employment of mariners are covered in detail, and the nations that are signatories to the various laws and conventions are listed so mariners can be sure the rules apply to them. This is an invaluable guide to help mariners avoid falling into harm’s way.
A conjuration of ancient consciousness aimed at rehumanizing our contemporary cyborg condition."Referring to the American continent, 'Abya Yala' ('land of life') is a pre-Columbian term of the Guna people of Panamá and Colombia. Harrison wrestles with language, racism, and humanity in political and spiritual poems."—Publishers Weekly, Most Anticipated Poetry Books, Spring 2024“Abya Yala”—“land of life” or “land of vital blood”—is a Pre-Columbian term of the Guna people of Panamá and Colombia to refer to the American continent and more recently has signified the idea of a decolonized “New World” among various Indigenous movements. In Isthmus to Abya Yala, Panamanian American poet Roberto Harrison summons a mythic consciousness in response to this political and spiritual struggle. In his poems, with mystic fervor, Harrison finds phonetic unities concealing conceptual oppositions he must transcend. Invoking “mobilian” as an ur-language against racism and toward an all-inclusive humanity—in opposition to the “mobile” of phone-mediated existence—the poems of Isthmus to Abya Yala burn with a visionary ardor that overpowers rationality through an intensive accumulation of imagery. They even sometimes manifest as visual poems in the form of drawings he calls “Tecs,” opposing the dominance of technology to the advocacy of pan-Indian nationhood by 19th century Shawnee leader Tecumseh. “Tecumseh Republic” is the poet’s name for a new post-racial, post-national, post-binary, post-colonial, holistic and earth-oriented society with no national borders, with Panamá, the isthmus, as its only entry and exit.
A conceptual and multimedia artist known for her writing, photography, painting, installation, and public art, Celia Alvarez Muñoz has been invited to exhibit and to create site-specific works for more than fifty major U.S. museums and was included in the 1991 Whitney Biennial. In her work Muñoz draws on family and communal memories to explore her own experiences growing up Catholic and Mexican American on the Texas-Mexico border, as well as larger issues concerning the spaces between languages and cultures and the histories that connect place to community. With more than one hundred color photographs, this book in the landmark A Ver series surveys Muñoz's career from her earliest bookmaking project, the Enlightenment series, and such installation pieces as Stories Your Mother Never Told You to her more recent works of public art and digital photography. Throughout his in-depth essay, Roberto Tejada illuminates Muñoz's feminist perspective, political engagement, and provocative use of ideas and artifacts from two cultures.
In these pages, Roberto de Mattei argues that "The best way to approach Islam is to respect it. And to respect it means to accept it for what it is, without 'reinterpreting' it and trying to make it what it is not." His is such a sensible approach that it unlikely to be taken up by our leaders, because to view Islam "as it really is" involves jettisoning illusions upon which our foreign policy has been built for decades. Our leaders suffer from a lack of understanding, a lack of imagination, and a lack of will. They are content to serve as justification for Robert Louis Stevenson's remark that man does not live by bread alone, but chiefly by catchwords. Their thinking is that, with catchwords, we can muddle along-and we can, for a while. The true catch is that, once that while is over, it may be too late to rectify things. -From the Foreword by Karl Keating, President of Catholic Answers

Politicians, pundits, and Pentagon officials are singing the praises of a kinder, gentler American counterinsurgency. Some claim that counterinsurgency is so sophisticated and effective that it is the 'graduate level of war'. Private military contracting firms have jumped on the bandwagon, and many have begun employing anthropologists, political scientists, psychologists, and sociologists to help meet the Department of Defense's new demand. The $60 million Human Terrain System (HTS), an intelligence gathering program that embeds social scientists with combat brigades in Iraq and Afghanistan, dramatically illustrates the approach. But when the military, transnational corporations, and the human sciences become obsessed with controlling the 'human terrain' - the civilian populations of Iraq and Afghanistan - what are the consequences? In this timely pamphlet, Roberto J. Gonzalez offers a searing critique of HTS, showing how the history of anthropology can be used to illuminate the problems of turning 'culture' into a military tool.
The Pope is first of all the pastor of the Church and sign of its unity. He can be a theologian professionally, or he cannot be, as it has happened for the majority of popes. ln both cases, in his teaching as well as in the choices he makes or in the orientations he offers, his teaching and his style are imbued with a theological perspective and ask theologians to confront with them. The collection "Pope Francis' Theology," calling upon the expertise of eleven theologians from various Countries of the world, aims at showing us what theology is at the base of such incisive words and such simple gestures with which Pope Francis has made us so familiar. They are eleven easy volumes, written in a captivating way yet able to show in a rigorous way the deep roots of his thought and action. The Dream of a Gospel Inspired Church provides a focus on the vision of the evangelical and missionary Church dreamed of by the Pope both through the ecclesiological examination of his most important documents and through a profound reflection on his teachings centered on the Gospel of Mercy. In the perspective of the ecclesiological teaching of Pope Francis, there is a chapter on the reform of the Church which is currently underway and which he strongly desired so that, in the passing of time and in changing situations, he may remain "evangelical and transparent to the merciful God who lives and makes it exist"
An important contribution to the literature of psychosynthesis, this book presents a synthetic essay that gathers the teachings of Roberto Assagioli, MD, concerning marriage, couples, relationships, and "inter-individual" psychosynthesis. Much of this material is presented for the first time in English. This essay is edited with notes and an introductory essay by Jan Kuniholm, with a reminiscence by Piero Ferrucci.
A comic strip about nerdiness, friendship, sex, love ... and other maladies of the human condition. As the title suggests, the heroes of Singloids are a group of unattached thirty-somethings who struggle with the universal themes of sexlovefriendship.... You may feel you've heard plenty on those topics ... but that's where Singloids stands apart. The writing is exceptional, ironic, and sharp as a knife; the production values are excellent; the designs are expert; and the use of color is especially attractive. (fumettOnline)Singloids is seasoned by embarrassing encounters with the opposite sex, belated post-adolescent reflections, compromising conversations with co-workers, and a defiant call for Nerd Pride.... (IlMioLibro)The artwork is simple but enormously effective, and the character design is lean, streamlined, and utterly expressive. (Prevalente Anime e Manga)Singloids jumps casually and playfully between social satire and intimate close-ups of (mostly disastrous) interpersonal relationships.... The humor that comes only from the intelligent observation of reality is ever-present.... Singloids is so well designed and constructed that it could easily find a place among syndicated American comic strips. (BALLOONS, The Comic Strip Blog)The surreal adventures of Bob, Sid, and Ted are at least partially based upon the lives of the strip's authors: One is a Java programmer, one is an IT systems engineer, and one is ... well, "he's the guy who knows how to draw." In case anyone ever asks, you can rest assured that no chocolate-chip cookies were harmed in the making of Singloids. (iPadWorld)
A fantastic collection of Soviet Asian architecture, many photographed here for the first time Soviet Asia explores the Soviet modernist architecture of Central Asia. Italian photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego crossed the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR. The resulting images showcase the majestic, largely unknown, modernist buildings of the region. Museums, housing complexes, universities, circuses, ritual palaces – all were constructed using a composite aesthetic. Influenced by Persian and Islamic architecture, pattern and mosaic motifs articulated a connection with Central Asia. Grey concrete slabs were juxtaposed with colourful tiling and rectilinear shapes broken by ornate curved forms: the brutal designs normally associated with Soviet-era architecture were reconstructed with Eastern characteristics. Many of the buildings shown in Soviet Asia are recorded here for the first time, making this book an important document, as despite the recent revival of interest in Brutalist and Modernist architecture, a number of them remain under threat of demolition. The publication includes two contextual essays, one by Alessandro De Magistris (architect and History of Architecture professor, University of Milan, contributor to the book Vertical Moscow) and the other by Marco Buttino (Modern and Urban History professor, University of Turin, specializing in the history of social change in the USSR).
