The Sydney Wars

The Sydney Wars

Stephen Gapps

Described by one early colonist as ‘this constant sort of war’, The Sydney Wars tells the history of military engagements between Europeans and Aboriginal Australians around greater Sydney.Telling the story of the first years of colonial Sydney in a new and original way, this provocative book is the first detailed account of the warfare that occurred across the Sydney region from the arrival of a British expedition in 1788 to the last recorded conflict in the area in 1817. The Sydney Wars sheds new light on how British and Aboriginal forces developed military tactics and how the violence played out.Analysing the paramilitary roles of settlers and convicts and the militia defensive systems that were deployed, it shows that white settlers lived in fear, while Indigenous people fought back as their land and resources were taken away. Stephen Gapps details the violent conflict that formed part of a long period of colonial strategic efforts to secure the Sydney basin and, in time, the rest of the continent.

A history of one of Sydney’s largest subcultures – one that’s been hidden from history despite gay men’s influence on Sydney’s social, cultural, economic and political life. Garry Wotherspoon’s Gay Sydney is an updated version of his 1991 classic, City of the Plain, written in the midst of the AIDS crisis. Wotherspoon traces the shifts that have occurred since then, including majority support for marriage equality and antidiscrimination legislation. He also ponders the parallel evaporation of a distinctly gay sensibility and the disappearance of once-packed gay bars. This book also tells the story of gay Sydney across a century, looking at secret gay life, the never-ending societal debates about sex and the role of social movements in the ’60 and ’70s in effecting change. Wotherspoon gets personal too, writing about his own experiences and the changes he has observed in Sydney’s gay life, having been a long-time resident of Oxford Street at the very heart of Sydney’s gay community.

The Sydney Cyprus Survey Project

The Sydney Cyprus Survey Project

sidottu
The Sydney Cyprus Survey Project (SCSP) devoted five seasons of fieldwork (1992-1997) to an intensive archaeological survey in the north-central foothills of the Troodos Mountains on the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus. The survey covered 65 square kilometres in and around the modern villages of Politiko and Mitsero. This pathbreaking project examined the relationship between the production and distribution of agricultural and metallurgical resources. Additionally, the project provides new insights into the interpretation and collection of regional archaeological data. The volume represents an integrated approach to the discussion of social landscapes--from archaeological, historical, geomorphological, geobotanical, and archaeometallurgical perspectives--within the SCSP survey universe. The twenty-two contributors to this volume provide a comprehensive data set including lithics, pottery, site types, and radiocarbon dates. Full colour GIS maps provide a wealth of information on pottery densities and site distributions. This well-illustrated monograph will serve as a model for future research throughout the region.
