The End of the West and Other Cautionary Tales

The End of the West and Other Cautionary Tales

Sean Meighoo

Columbia University Press

Most historical accounts of "the West" take it for granted that the guiding principles of the Western tradition-reason, progress, and freedom-have been passed down directly from ancient Greece to modern Europe, evolving in isolation from all non-Western cultures. Today, many political analysts and cultural critics maintain that the Western tradition is fast approaching its end, for better or worse, as it becomes more and more integrated with non-Western cultures in an increasingly globalized world. But what if we are witnessing something else entirely-not the "end" of the West but rather another historical mutation of the idea of the West itself? This groundbreaking work shows that whether the West is hailed as the source of all historical progress or scorned as the root of all cultural imperialism, it remains a deeply problematic concept that is intrinsically connected to an ethnocentric view of the world. In a critical reading of the continental philosophers Husserl, Heidegger, Levinas, and Derrida as well as the postcolonial thinkers Said, Mohanty, Bhabha, and Trinh, Sean Meighoo strikes at the intellectual foundations of Western exceptionalism until its ideological supports show through. Deconstructing the concept of the West in his provocative interpretations of Martin Bernal's controversial publication Black Athena and the Beatles' second film Help!, Meighoo poses a formidable question to philosophers, writers, political analysts, and cultural critics alike: Can we mount an effective critique of Western ethnocentrism without reinforcing the very idea of the West?

Following the top-ten bestselling success of A Battle Won, Under Enemy Colours and A Ship of War, Sean Thomas Russell's captivating fourth novel Until The Sea Shall Give Up Her Dead is the maritime adventure of 2014. Under the command of Captain Charles Hayden, Royal Navy frigate HMS Themis is sent to counter the threat of the French forces in the West Indies. In the middle of the vast Atlantic, Hayden discovers two Spanish noblemen, castaway in a ship's boat - a stroke of almost impossible good fortune. The Spaniards' explanation for their plight seems so improbable that Hayden's officers suspect them of being criminals or even spies. But they have secrets far more shocking than that - secrets which will haunt Hayden in his new posting. Upon reaching the Barbados station, Hayden finds himself under the command of the vainglorious Sir William Jones, an impetuous and foolhardy officer. Refusing orders will cost Hayden his command. Accepting them might cost him his ship and crew. UNTIL THE SEA SHALL GIVE UP HER DEAD is the brilliant fourth tale in the epic maritime adventures of Charles Hayden. Steve Walker was a professional comedy magician and MC. He was born in Yorkshire but lived most of his adult life in Sydney, Australia. After Steve's death, his fellow magicians helped to sell his estate and discovered a small note book. From 1953 until 1963, a young Steve had written down over 700 jokes, gags, one liners and wise cracks from TV and radio. What we have here then is not only a valuable source of funnies, but a unique peep into British Variety in the 1950s. Steve's friend and colleague Sean Taylor has not only deciphered the jokes, but adds his own impressions of Steve, some funny stories and even a complete transcript of his 45 minute magic act. Remarkably, the jokes were old when Steve heard them and yet, 70 years on, they are still remarkably fresh and familiar. So whether you are a magician, ventriloquist, Variety enthusiast or MC, or you just want to spice up a speech or presentation, this might just be the book for you.
