An Astrological Guide for Broken Hearts
NOW A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES Frustrated at the path her life has taken, Alice decides to take control of her personal life using astrology as her guide in this quirky, steamy, and hilarious romantic comedy.Alice Bassi is (a little) over thirty, single (not by choice), and she can’t help but feel that she is failing at this whole adulthood thing. She’s stuck in a dead-end job, just found out her ex-boyfriend is engaged to his pregnant girlfriend, and Richard Gere hasn’t shown up with flowers and a limo to save her from it all. On one particularly disastrous morning—when Alice would much rather have stayed home, curled up with her favorite rom-coms—she meets Davide Nardi. Handsome yet indecipherable, Davide would be the leading man of Alice’s dreams—if only he weren’t the “hatchet man” brought in to help streamline production and personnel at the small television network she works for. In the midst of all this, Alice runs into Tio—an actor and astrology expert who is convinced he can turn her life around with a little help from the stars. Skeptical but willing, Alice decides to take Tio’s advice and only date men whose Zodiac signs are compatible with hers. Unfortunately, it turns out that astrological affinity doesn’t always guarantee a perfect match, nor prevent a series of terrible dates, disappointments, and awkward surprises. It also doesn’t keep Davide from becoming more attractive every day. Perfect for fans of Bridget Jones’s Diary and Star-Crossed, An Astrological Guide for Broken Hearts is a witty, sexy, and relatable portrait of a modern woman’s search for love and a dream job, only to discover that your destiny isn’t always written in the stars.

This sweeping debut novel set in a unified Korea tells the story of three estranged siblings--two human, one robot--as they collide against the backdrop of a murder investigation to settle old scores and make sense of their shattered childhood. "I once had a family. At least, the earliest version of me had a family." In a reunified Korea of the near future, the sun beats down on a junkyard filled with abandoned robots, broken down for parts. Eleven-year-old Ruijie sifts through the scraps, searching for a piece that might support her failing body. There among the piles of trash, something catches her eye: a robot boy--so lifelike and strange, unlike anything she's ever seen before. Siblings Jun and Morgan haven't spoken for years. When they were children, their brother Yoyo disappeared suddenly, leaving behind only distant memories of his laughter and near-human warmth. Yoyo--an early prototype of a humanoid robot designed by their father--was always bound for something darker and more complex. Now Morgan makes robots for a living and is on the verge of losing control of her most important creation. Jun is a detective with the Robot Crimes Unit whose investigation is digging up truths that want to stay buried. And whether they like it or not, Ruijie's discovery will thrust their family back together in ways they could have never imagined. At once a thrilling work of speculative fiction and a "bold exploration of what it means to have a mind, a body, a self, and even a soul" (Charles Yu, author of National Book Award winner Interior Chinatown), Luminous is a prescient yet timeless and unforgettably brilliant debut.

Silvia Landi

Nuclear Agendas in Japan and Taiwan

Nuclear Agendas in Japan and Taiwan compares practical management cases regarding nuclear energy in regional neighbouring partners: Japan and Taiwan. An introductory overview of Japan's nuclear policy leads to the specification of important factors tangible in everyday life. What we perceive as knowledge transfer innovation and renewed industrial assessments shift to a regional territory that develops its own rules and practices within the dimension of nuclear energy innovation technology and post-crisis regulatory agendas. This literature-based discussion refers to complementary systems and recovery practices that have been envisioned in a post-Fukushima nuclear adaptive model. Thematic information about environmental effects and institutional partnerships advance the idea of a comparable ecosystem in which deliberative processes undertaken in Japan follow science, technology, and societal (STS) exchanges that form concurrent regional action plans with contextual disaster risk arrangements. Taiwan is an essential complementary innovation case reviewed in this analysis for contextual environmental policy directions. Reflections about regional knowledge transfers and energy innovation technology in Taiwan highlight some history-related factors that can facilitate a specific understanding of regional innovation in Asia-Pacific and local energy innovation partnerships. Nuclear energy organizational plans for Taiwan are introduced in association with the (STS) approach due to comparable socioeconomic dynamics that can deeply influence science and technology enterprises and Taiwanese localities, thereby offering objective participation. In both Japanese and Taiwanese nuclear regulatory cases, this technical account indicates the build-up of communication systems and a regional development framework that has been reformed progressively, but nevertheless shows an increased tendency to classify promotional learning networks through safety and security schemes intertwined with nuclear energy transitions worldwide.

A moving tale about a brave hearing and eyesight-impaired teen, told through the perspective of his loving sister in poetry, prose, and the sign-language alphabet. Carlo is a teenager who happens to be hearing-impaired and can see only out of one eye. Now that eye is failing, and Carlo must have an operation to try to save his vision. His fierce and funny sister Emma, Carlo's closest companion, begins writing poems that express the fear she works hard to hide, while his seeing-eye dog Lul remains steadfastly at his side. But even with the support and affection of his family, how can Carlo face such uncertainty? And what will happen if he can no longer communicate with them? Before Nightfall is a book about trust, imagination, empathy, and language, narrated through the poems Emma types and through prose passages told from multiple perspectives and illustrated with the ASL alphabet, drawn by the Italian artist Sualzo. Despite the immense challenges Carlo and Emma face, their story is one of hope and wonder.

Comparing two consequential movements that shed light on the nature of revolution>Revolutions in Cuba and Venezuela compares the sociopolitical processes behind two major revolutions—Cuba in 1959, when Fidel Castro came to power, and Venezuela in 1999, when Hugo Chávez won the presidential election. With special attention to the Cuba-Venezuela alliance, particularly in regards to foreign policy and the trade of doctors for oil, Silvia Pedraza and Carlos Romero show that the geopolitical theater where these events played out determined the dynamics and reach of the revolutions.Updating and enriching the current understanding of the Cuban and Venezuelan revolutions, this study is unique in its focus on the massive exodus they generated. Pedraza and Romero argue that this factor is crucial for comprehending a revolution’s capacity to succeed or fail. By externalizing dissent, refugees helped to consolidate the revolutions, but as the diasporas became significant political actors and the lifelines of each economy, they eventually served to undermine the social movements.Using comparative historical analysis and data collected through fieldwork in Cuba and Venezuela as well as from immigrant communities in the U.S., Pedraza and Romero discuss issues of politics, economics, migrations, authoritarianism, human rights, and democracy in two nations that hoped to make a better world through their revolutionary journeys.Publication of this work made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
