The phrases “scripture says” and “as it is written” in early Christian literature appear unremarkable, little more than throwaway lines. Tailoring Scripture with Citation Formulae: Clues about Early Christian Views of the Holy Books and the Holy God contends, however, that they provide much to remark on. Current discussions of scriptural intertextuality either neglect or instrumentalize citation formulae. Within a world of expensive books and widespread illiteracy, though, the formulae would not only have signaled the presence of an upcoming citation. At times they also situated and interpreted a quoted passage. Further, close attention to the formulae yields three interesting clues about early Christian views of the holy books and the holy God. First, the media of the formulae in the Gospels cuts precisely counter to expectations, with the pre-Synoptic tradition indicating a textual view of scripture and Matthew, an oral one. Second, the wellspring of prosopological exegesis, that is, discovering the triune God speaking in Israel’s sacred writings, is best attributed to the Epistle to the Hebrews. Third, while the undisputed Pauline letters say little about the nature of scripture, the apostle’s citation formulae in Romans and Galatians indicate that it operated as a divine hypostasis for him. This book is a comprehensive study including an analysis and catalogue of early Christian formulae.

John William WATSON, tailor, and Ellen Elizabeth PEARCH married in Stockton-On-Tees, England in 1875. They lived with John's mother in Middlesbrough where their first son was born in 1879. That year John left his family and immigrated to New Zealand where he established himself as a tailor in Invercargill. In 1881, John's mother, his wife Ellen and his two-year-old son joined him. John operated his business from the family home, which for two decades was close to the Invercargill jetty so he could sail his yachts. From 1882 until 1889 John and Ellen had a daughter and four more sons, one of whom died in infancy. John managed to support his family by his tailoring business during the poor economic conditions of the Long Depression. As the economy improved John opened a tailoring shop in the town centre that employed about nine workers. However, a disastrous fire in 1903 nearly ruined the enterprise. Consequently John underpaid his employees but was discovered and charged under the Factories Act 1891. In the face of competition from mass-produced garments he kept the business afloat until he retired about 1920. John died in 1923 and Ellen in 1950. One of their sons served in World War 1, was wounded, married in England and never returned. John and Ellen's three remaining sons married and produced 20 grandchildren who survived to adulthood. Five grandsons served in World War 2.

The cause of psoriasis is still unknown, though exposure to definite agents (throat streptococcal infection), smoking, alcohol consumption, certain medicines (lithium), and local irritation or injury to the skin may be risk factors for persons genetically predisposed to the disease. Psoriasis symptoms can vary extensively, from mild rashes to severe situations. Treatment consists of various modalities used locally on the skin and taken by mouth. This book gathers and presents information on targeted treatments for psoriasis in four chapters.
