An American Girl in the Hawaiian Islands

An American Girl in the Hawaiian Islands

Carrie Prudence Winter

University of Hawai'i Press
2012
sidottu
When twenty-three-year-old Carrie Prudence Winter caught her first glimpse of Honolulu from aboard the Zealandia in October 1890, she had 'never seen anything so beautiful.' She had been travelling for two months since leaving her family home in Connecticut and was at last only a few miles from her final destination, Kawaiahao Female Seminary, a flourishing boarding school for Hawaiian girls. As the daughter of staunch New England Congregationalists, Winter had dreamed of being a missionary teacher as a child and reasoned that 'teaching for a few years among the Sandwich Islands seemed particularly attractive' while her fiancé pursued a science degree. During her three years at Kawaiahao, Winter wrote often and at length to her 'beloved Charlie'; her lively and affectionate letters provide readers with not only an intimate look at nineteenth-century courtship, but many invaluable details about life in Hawai'i during the last years of the monarchy and a young woman's struggle to enter a career while adjusting to surroundings that were unlike anything she had ever experienced. In generous excerpts from dozens of letters, Winter describes teaching and living with her pupils, her relationships with fellow teachers, and her encounters with Hawaiian royalty (in particular Kawaiahao enjoyed the patronage of Queen Liliuokalani, whose adopted daughter was enrolled as a pupil) and members of influential missionary families, as well as ordinary citizens. She discusses the serious health concerns (leprosy, smallpox, malaria) that irrevocably affected the lives of her students and took a keen (if somewhat naive) interest in relaying the political turmoil that ended in the annexation of the Hawaiian Islands by the U.S. in 1898. The book opens with a magazine article written by Winter and published while she was still teaching at Kawaiahao, which humorously recounts her journey from Connecticut to Hawaii and her arrival at the seminary. The work is augmented by more than fifty photographs, four autobiographical student essays, and an appendix identifying all of Winter's students and others mentioned in the letters. A foreword by education historian C. Kalani Beyer provides a context for understanding the Euro-centric and assimilationist curriculum promoted by early schools for Hawaiians like Kawaiahao Seminary and later the Kamehameha Schools and Mid-Pacific Institute.

Family Resemblances

The poems in Family Resemblances unfold in a series of overlapping narratives in which characters struggle with injury and healing, violence and fear, courage and forgiveness. Throughout this beautiful volume, the multiple meanings of family—whether formed by biology or choice—are questioned through careful attention to the often conflicting notions of connection, inheritance, absence, and escape. The truths these poems find are much like life itself: complex, provisional, and rich.

In Grief Land Carrie Shipers explores the paradoxical nature of bereavement as both a universal human experience and an intensely personal one. The poems interrogate and dismiss common notions of loss and recovery through a series of letter-poems--to authors who have written about grief, to the speaker's dead husband, and to a society that believes it has the right to dictate how a widow should feel and act. The collection explores living with grief without being consumed by it and how to emerge into a new life.

In an era in which collegiate monuments physical (the University of North Carolina's Silent Sam statue) and aural (the University of Texas's use of "Eyes on Texas") are being scrutinized on a national stage, From Dixie to Rocky Top explains how so much history became embedded in Southern football culture and reflects on how Southern universities reckon with their troubling icons, symbols, and songs. The project took author Carrie Tipton deep into the archives of the seventeen universities currently or formerly in the Southeastern Conference. It also draws on historic newspapers, magazines, recordings, football programs, scrapbooks, photographs, and sheet music accessible in online databases and print sources. In interpreting the primary source data, the book draws on approaches and secondary literature from sports history, Southern and American history, Southern and American studies, and musicology. From Dixie to Rocky Top traces and analyzes the history of SEC football fight songs over a turbulent century. The book chronicles iconic Southern fight songs’ origins, dissemination, meanings, and cultural reception, weaving a compelling narrative around a repertory virtually unexplored by scholars.

The first book to explore the history of college fight songs as a culturally important phenomenon, From Dixie to Rocky Top zeroes in on the US South, where college football has forged a powerful, quasi-religious sense of meaning and identity throughout the region. Tracing the story of Southeastern Conference (SEC) fight songs from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first century, author Carrie Tipton places this popular repertory within the broader commercial music industry and uses fight songs to explore themes of authorship and copyright; the commodification of school spirit; and the construction of race, gender, and regional identity in Southern football culture. This book explores the history embedded in SEC football’s music traditions, drawing from the archives of the seventeen universities currently or formerly in the conference. Alongside rich primary sources, Tipton incorporates approaches and literature from sports history, Southern and American history, Southern and American studies, and musicology. Chronicling iconic Southern fight songs’ origins, dissemination, meanings, and cultural reception over a turbulent century, From Dixie to Rocky Top weaves a compelling narrative around a virtually unstudied body of popular music.

The fact that women and people of color tend to underperform at professional schools is a source of controversy. Conservatives blame affirmative action, while liberals blame intentional discrimination. The extensive research reported in ""Professional Identity Crisis"" belies both conspiracy theories. The author spent over 400 hours observing how first-year students are socialized in two very different environments, Boalt School of Law and the School of Social Welfare at UC Berkeley, watching how they adapted to different expectations of how to speak, dress, and behave in the classroom. Costello found that students who were female, of color, disabled, or poor were not underqualified compared with their privileged peers. Nor did the research uncover intentional bigotry. Instead, the disproportionate success of white men can be explained by the fact that they are more likely to acquire appropriate professional identities swiftly, with little inner conflict. Students from less privileged backgrounds, however, suffered from ""identity dissonance."" For example, Jasmine, a Filipino student from Los Angeles, explained, ""In the legal culture you have to adopt a different way of being, a different vocabulary and way to carry yourself...That's how I got this far. And when I go home, if I act the way I do here, they won't get it. My cousins and my friends say, 'You're kind of whitewashed.' And when I come back here I have to get back my law style.

In Mexico, the confluence of the 1992 Quincentennial commemoration of Columbus's voyages and the neo-liberal sexenio, or presidency, of Carlos Salinas de Gortari spurred artistic creations that capture the decade like no other source does. In the 1990s, Mexican artists produced an inordinate number of works that revise and rewrite the events of the sixteenth-century conquest and colonization. These works and their relationship to, indeed their mirroring of, the intellectual and cultural atmosphere in Mexico during the Salinas presidency are of paramount importance if we are to understand the subtle but deep shifts within Mexico's national identity that took place at the end of the last century. Throughout the twentieth century, the post-revolutionary Mexican State had used mestizaje as a symbol of national unity and social integration. By the end of the millennium, however, Mexico had gone from a PRI-dominated, economically protectionist nation to a more democratic, economically globalizing one. More importantly, the homogenizing, mestizophile national identity that pervaded Mexico throughout the past century had given way to official admission of Mexico's ethnic and linguistic diversity - or 'pluriculture' according to President Salinas's 1992 constitutional revision. This book is the first interdisciplinary study of literary, cinematic, and graphic images of Mexican national identity in the 1980s and '90s. Discussing, in depth, writings, films, and cartoons from a vast array of contemporary sources, Carrie C. Chorba creates a social history of this important shift.

A better understanding of these needs can inform investments in initiatives that target these populations and guide efforts to remedy barriers to access.

Roman philosopher Cicero once remarked that “if you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Today, libraries nationwide are beginning to incorporate gardens into their public services. Libraries in the southwestern US, for instance, are creating drought-tolerant gardens as neighborhood demonstration projects, while elsewhere gardens are being used to promote community engagement and even STEM learning. Citing examples of library gardens around the world that are thriving, this first-ever book on the subject not only demonstrates the many benefits of library gardens but also provides a complete overview of issues applicable to all library types and geographical environments. Particularly in places of learning, technology is all-pervasive; because everyone is always making copies, copyright is center stage. And copyright law, when misapplied or misinterpreted, affects not only the way that you teach but even what you teach. With decades of experience interpreting the intricacies of copyright law as it pertains to librarianship, Russell is the ideal authority to address the concerns of librarians, teachers, and teaching librarians who work in the K–12 environment. Her book will encourage you to stop allowing your fear of copyright issues to limit how and what you share or teach, and instead be more involved in shaping copyright law to better serve your learning community. Through scenario-based discussions, it covers key topics such as the reasons librarians and teachers have so many misconceptions about copyright, and why understanding copyright is a process, not a one-time event; recent legislative and policy developments that impact schools and libraries; situations often encountered by educators, such as using copyrighted material in class assignments, digital lesson plans, bulletin board displays, social media, school plays, and band performances and talent shows; the use of licensed content in a variety of settings; what constitutes "fair use," so that you can be empowered by knowing exactly what's possible within the law; and guidance on making long-term strategic decisions and developing copyright policies.

The first years are critical, a pivotal time when children have powerful curiosity, exuberance for learning, and make strong connections through their experiences. This is also when a child's attitudes, values and perceptions are formed: 'Do I belong here?', 'Am I good enough?' Our grasp of how children learn has developed sharply in recent years. Nurseries and schools constantly review their approach, but churches frequently employ antiquated practices. Many alienate children because our methods don't meet their needs, and because we don't realise that some of the strongest messages are hidden. We are inoculating our children against church. The intention is to challenge churches about their children's work; to inform children's workers about the latest research; and to provide practical ideas. The authors suggest ways of providing relevant experiences and developing children's creativity, so that children's encounters with church is positive and enriching.
