Tom, who is a magical tomato, rounds up some of his garden friends to go on a journey to stop the first frost and the coming of winter from killing the rest of his friends that reside in the garden. With some good and not-so-good advice from most of the farm animals and the help of a magical stick and cloak, Tom sets out on his quest. After a few mishaps, Tom and his tribe must return to the farm in defeat. But as soon as Tom returns home in despair, Tom realizes that in every bad moment in life there is a silver lining as well.

The story is about Mary Magdalen, a repentant sinner, who sets out on a "quest" for a husband following the death of her parents. Mary finds her long-sought-after spouse at her death, when she is united with her Eternal Bridegroom.
