Bending Light with Bare Hands

Bending Light with Bare Hands

David B Prather

Fernwood Press

pokkari
Bending Light with Bare Hands is a direct response to Covid lockdown and all the insecurities and frustrations that accompanied compulsory isolation. The poems in this collection each begin with a singular event of nagging thought that gets woven into larger associative tapestries, a journal of verse addressing existence though personal experience.Themes of apocalypse, of the battles of darkness and light, and of struggles with traditional/familial beliefs emerge from suburban landscapes and childhood memories of a rural upbringing. From the author's fear of losing his vision to cataracts, to his knowledge of the world through the superstitions of his ancestors, to his obsession with weather, these poems pull from the mundane and the supernal and the mystical in order to celebrate the world as a constant in our ever-changing lives.

Despite knowing the risk for relinquished persons, there remains a chasm in awareness, both within and outside the adoption community about the special, unspoken, and unmet needs of relinquished persons and their families. The authors, David B. Bohl, MA and Jamie Marich, PhD, therefore provide an overview of the complex issues involved in relinquishment and adoption, and in particular, as they relate to susceptibility of addiction. Topics include discussions of Developmental Trauma, Understanding (or Misunderstanding) Relinquishment, Adoption and Addiction, Addiction in Relinquishees, and other resources.

David H. Levy, the science columnist for PARADE magazine, who took over Carl Sagan's post, is one of the world's foremost astronomers and a contributor to ASTRONOMY magazine. He has discovered 22 comets, including Shoemaker-Levy 9, which collided with Jupiter and made news around the world. In this easily understood book, he takes the armchair reader around the cosmos, introducing the major subjects studied by astronomy students in a manner non-students, and ageing ex-students can understand. Accompanied by b&w illustrations and a color section of important discoveries and maps, this book is the place to start for anybody who wants an introductory course or refresher course in a subject of extraordinary scope.

Habitat loss and degradation that comes as a result of human activity is the single biggest threat to biodiversity in the world today. "Habitat Fragmentation and Landscape Change" is a groundbreaking work that brings together a wealth of information from a wide range of sources to define the ecological problems caused by landscape change and to highlight the relationships among landscape change, habitat fragmentation, and biodiversity conservation. The book: synthesizes a large body of information from the scientific literature; considers key theoretical principles for examining and predicting effects; examines the range of effects that can arise; explores ways of mitigating impacts; reviews approaches to studying the problem; and discusses knowledge gaps and future areas for research and management. "Habitat Fragmentation and Landscape Change" offers a unique mix of theoretical and practical information, outlining general principles and approaches and illustrating those principles with case studies from around the world. It represents a definitive overview and synthesis on the full range of topics that fall under the widely used but often vaguely defined term "habitat fragmentation."
Salvage Logging and Its Ecological Consequences

Salvage Logging and Its Ecological Consequences

Island Press

Salvage logging - removing trees from a forested area in the wake of a catastrophic event such as a wildfire or hurricane - is highly controversial. Policymakers and those with an economic interest in harvesting trees typically argue that damaged areas should be logged so as to avoid "wasting" resources, while many forest ecologists contend that removing trees following a disturbance is harmful to a variety of forest species and can interfere with the natural process of ecosystem recovery."Salvage Logging and Its Ecological Consequences" brings together three leading experts on forest ecology to explore a wide range of issues surrounding the practice of salvage logging. They gather and synthesize the latest research and information about its economic and ecological costs and benefits, and consider the impacts of salvage logging on ecosystem processes and biodiversity. The book examines: what salvage logging is and why it is controversial; natural and human disturbance regimes in forested ecosystems; differences between salvage harvesting and traditional timber harvesting; scientifically documented ecological impacts of salvage operations; and, the importance of land management objectives in determining appropriate post-disturbance interventions.Brief case studies from around the world highlight a variety of projects, including operations that have followed wildfires, storms, volcanic eruptions, and insect infestations. In the final chapter, the authors discuss policy management implications and offer prescriptions for mitigating the impacts of future salvage harvesting efforts."Salvage Logging and Its Ecological Consequences" is a "must-read" volume for policymakers, students, academics, practitioners, and professionals involved in all aspects of forest management, natural resource planning, and forest conservation.

In this deposition skills file, Alice Rowe has brought an action under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Nita Fair Employment Act (which is identical to the California Fair Employment & Housing Act) for sexual harassment and wrongful discharge against her employer, Pacific Quad, Inc. She asserts that her supervisor, operations manager Stanley Schmit, continually leered at her, made offensive sexually suggestive comments to her, brushed by her in order to sexually touch her, and, finally, propositioned her during the two weeks she worked for Pacific Quad. She further alleges that the president of Pacific Quad, John Walsh, was informed of the harassment and ratified it. Rowe claims lost wages, medical expenses (psychotherapy), general damages for emotional distress, and punitive damages. Witnesses may be deposed on the issue of liability only or liability and damages. There are three witnesses for the plaintiff and three for the defendant. The plaintiff and defendant versions are self-contained and can be used independently of each other to teach deposition skills. A trial version of Rowe v. Pacific Quad, Inc. is also available. The deposition and trial files are fully integrated, so that students may use the deposition materials to study deposition practice, using the NITA method, and then go on to study trial practice using the trial materials.

Corporate Governance and Entrepreneurial Firms

Corporate Governance and Entrepreneurial Firms

Corporate Governance and Entrepreneurial Firms takes an in-depth look at corporate governance mechanisms in entrepreneurial firms, and offers an explanation on how and why they differ from those mechanisms in large and publicly traded corporations. While questions of corporate governance are mainly discussed and analyzed within the context of large and public companies, there is only scarce evidence on corporate governance issues arising in small- or medium-sized firms. To this end the motivation for this article is to direct attention to corporate governance in entrepreneurial firms.Corporate Governance and Entrepreneurial Firms develops a conceptual framework that may help to analyze corporate governance mechanisms in entrepreneurial firms, and serve as a leading example that compares the entrepreneurial firm with other types of firms. By capturing the mechanisms of corporate governance within an interval ranging from purely market mechanisms over contractual agreements to strong hierarchical elements, and integrating microeconomic and financial theories with the management perspective, the authors provide a unique viewpoint and summary, identifying several ideas to stimulate future research on this important and growing topic.

Israel's God and Rebecca's Children is a collection of essays written as a tribute to the lasting scholarship and friendship of Larry Hurtado (University of Edinburgh) and Alan Segal (Barnard College), two scholars who have contributed significantly to the contemporary understanding of Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity. Their colleagues and friends examine a wide range of topics that have been the focus of Hurtado and Segal's research, including Christology, community, Jewish-Christian relations, soteriology and the development of early Christianity. Together these essays reconceptualize Christology and community in Judaism and Christianity and provide valuable insights into the issues of community and identity.

MuzikMafia

In October 2001, an unlikely gathering of musicians calling itself the MuzikMafia took place at the Pub of Love in Nashville, Tennessee. ""We had all been beat up pretty good by the 'industry' and we told ourselves, if nothing else, we might as well be playing muzik,"" explains Big Kenny of Big and Rich. For the next year and a half, the MuzikMafia performed each week and garnered an ever-growing, dedicated fan base.Five years, several national tours, six Grammy nominations, and eleven million sold albums later, the MuzikMafia now includes a family of artists including founding members Big and Rich, Jon Nicholson, and Cory Gierman along with Gretchen Wilson, Cowboy Troy, James Otto, Shannon Lawson, Damien Horne (Mista D), Two-Foot Fred, Rachel Kice, and several more in development. This book explores how a set of shared beliefs created a bond that transformed the MuzikMafia into a popular music phenomenon. David B. Pruett examines the artists' coalition from the inside perspective he gained in five years of working with them. Looking at all aspects of the collective, MuzikMafia documents the problems encountered along the ascent, including business difficulties, tensions among members, disagreements with record labels, and miscalculations artists inevitably made before the MuzikMafia unofficially dissolved in 2008. A final section examines hope for the future: the birth of Mafia Nation in 2009.
The Paleoarchaic Occupation of the Old River Bed Delta

The Paleoarchaic Occupation of the Old River Bed Delta

University of Utah Press,U.S.

About 12,000 years ago, a major river ran from the Sevier Basin to the Great Salt Lake, feeding a wetland delta system and creating riparian habitat along its length. But after three thousand years the river dried up and the surrounding lands became more like what we see today. Because the Old River Bed Delta experienced less environmental and human disturbance than other areas, many of the Paleoarchaic sites found there have remained relatively intact—a rare find in the Great Basin. This book presents a comprehensive synthesis of a decade of investigations conducted by research teams working in different parts of the delta and explores questions about how the old riverbed was formed, how its distributary system changed through time, and how these changes affected early foragers. It concludes with an integrated summary and interpretation. Additional material from this study will be available online at UofUpress.com.
