The Queer Museum

The Queer Museum

The Queer Museum examines how relationships between institutions and LGBTQ+ communities function and how they help to define queer museum practice. Analysing what it means to queer the museum in Western contexts, the book builds upon and challenges texts about inclusionary, activist museum practice and discusses the ways in which Othered communities are engaged with and represented. Arguing that an institution’s understanding of queerness is directly related to the kind, and extent, of change pursued by the museum, the author clarifies that governance structures, staff hierarchies, funding and relationships to queer communities affect the way queering might be pursued. The analysis looks critically at exhibitions and institutions and particularly forefronts the experiences of museum practitioners. It argues that practical changes that positively affect museums’ long-term relationships with marginalised communities are critical. The book also considers the future of the museum by drawing on queer theories of utopia, futurity, failure and amateurism to complicate understandings of the queer museum and its relationship to people and objects. The Queer Museum will be of interest to students and academics in museum and heritage studies, art history and archival studies. It will also be essential reading for museum and arts sector practitioners who seek to do and engage with this kind of work. Zealous: A Darker Side of the Early Quakers

Zealous: A Darker Side of the Early Quakers

The mid-seventeenth century was a tumultuous time, and out of the chaos, Quakerism was born. Zealous: A Darker Side of the Early Quakers tells a different side to this story. The Civil Wars touched all corners of England, Scotland, and Wales; the people of the ‘poor, almost wasted Kingdom’ were war-weary, miserable, and in total ruin. Years of conflict left the people in utter desperation. Communities were pillaged, torn apart, and irrevocably changed. And then, in September 1651, it was over. What remained was a tattered landscape, an uncertain political future, religious upheaval, and emotional trauma. Amongst the turmoil, a new religious movement started in the north of England. The early Quakers were a group of people led by charismatic preachers wholly convinced that it was their responsibility to save as many souls as possible. Their means of convincing others to be saved ranged from attempting to perform miracles (and failing) to deeply antisocial behaviour (e.g., walking naked through busy towns) to infuriating local authorities (e.g., refusing to abide by the law and being repeatedly jailed). The early Quakers were standing on shifting sands during a very uncertain time. Throughout history, fear has always compelled people to do just about anything to feel safe and secure. Their zeal led them to challenge what they saw as an impure world. They were willing to die for their beliefs, and on occasion, they would commit unspeakable acts in the name of God.

Shifting Ethnic Identities in Spain and Gaul, 500-700
Traditional scholarship on post-Roman western culture has tended to examine the ethnic identities of Goths, Franks, and similar groups while neglecting the Romans themselves, in part because modern scholars have viewed the concept of being Roman as one denoting primarily a cultural or legal affiliation. As this book demonstrates, however, early medieval 'Romanness' also encompassed a sense of belonging to an ethnic group, which allowed Romans in Iberia and Gaul to adopt Gothic or Frankish identities in a more nuanced manner than has been previously acknowledged in the literature.

When my adventure first started, I was nothing more than a na ve girl whose goal in life was to get married, have a few kids to fill our house with, and somehow become an important part of our small community. I didn't wanted a lot of things, just a simple life of love and companionship.I married young, my first mistake. Soon after, what started off as a perfect marriage, ended up being a complete nightmare for me. My second mistake was listening to the people in my life, rather than the God who knew what plans he had in store for me. In the end, I'd lost my home, lost my marriage, and was on the verge of losing my life. Alone and afraid, I struggled to find my equilibrium in my not so perfect life, but it seemed that no matter what I did, I could do nothing but pray for mercy or beg for death. This book isn't your classic romance story. It's a real look into the hell that I had endured at the hands of my ex-husband. It's a completely honest view of what it was like to be me at one of the lowest points in my life, when it seemed that even God had forsaken me. I've come to learn that God had been in control the entire time, and by his grace, I'm able to sit here and right this book for each of you to read. You will find, as I did, that with a little faith, and a lot of love, there is a hope there in these pages. You'll meet Jaydon, the man who showed me how to overcome my past and forge forward into the future. No, it hasn't been easy, but as you will see, Jaydon was so worth it. Love always, Tori
