Frederic Soulie, einer der Pioniere des Fortsetzungsromans im 19. Jahrhundert, stellt Frauenschicksale in den Mittelpunkt seiner Sittenschilderungen. Auf der Grundlage eines Forschungsberichtes, der Vergleiche mit Werken der Hohenkammliteratur erlaubt, und unter Berucksichtigung zahlreicher Zeitdokumente zeigt die vorliegende Arbeit, dass Soulies Bild der Frau und ihrer Lebensbedingungen trotz zahlreicher melodramatischer Elemente, einer auf die Erzeugung von Spannung ausgerichteten Handlungsstruktur der Romane und des Antagonismus von Gut und Bose, der sich vor allem in den mythischen Frauengestalten manifestiert, durchaus authentische Zuge tragt. Die Grenzen einer vorwiegend implizit, durch die drastische Schilderung von Missstanden geubten Kritik des Autors an der "condition feminine" seiner Epoche weisen ihn als Mahner und Reformer, nicht aber als Verfechter einer vollkommenen Gleichstellung der Frau mit dem Mann aus."
