Authentic Transformation

Authentic Transformation

The study of Christian ethics in North America has been profoundly influenced during this century by the work of H. Richard Niebuhr. That influence is felt nowhere as keenly as in the widespread use of his classic text, Christ and Culture. Yet certain central flaws exist in Niebuhr's work on Christ and culture, particularly in its lack of concrete norms for the church's transformative engagement with the world. Scholars have long realized that further work must be done in this area if the church is to speak the word of the gospel adequately in the midst of a pluralistic and changing culture. In this book, Glen H. Stassen, D. M. Yeager, and John Howard Yoder push Christian ethical reflection beyond Niebuhr by offering an analysis and critique of Niebuhr's well-known fivefold typology of the relation of Christ to culture. They wrestle with the issue of how the actual, working church goes about being an agent of the transformation of culture. Unlike Niebuhr, whose description of the transformationist ideal had little grounding in the concrete existence of the church, the authors reflect on those practices through which congregations seek both to embody faithfulness to Jesus Christ and to be the church in their culture. As a prologue to this analytical and constructive task, the volume contains a previously unpublished essay by H. Richard Niebuhr, "Types of Christian Ethics," in which he laid out the framework of the typology he would later expand in Christ and Culture.
The Florida Scrub Jay

The Florida Scrub Jay

Florida Scrub Jays are an excellent example of a cooperative-breeding species, in which adult birds often help raise offspring not their own. For more than a decade Glen E. Woolfenden and John W. Fitzpatrick studied a marked population of these birds in an attempt to establish a demographic base for understanding the phenomenon of "helping at the nest." By studying both population biology and behavior, the authors found that habitat restraints, rather than kin selection, are the main source of the behavior of Florida Scrub Jays: the goal of increasing the number of close relatives other than descendants in future generations is of relatively minor importance in their cooperative-breeding behavior. The Florida Scrub Jay lives only in the Florida oak scrub. All acceptable habitat is constantly filled with breeders. Each year about half of the pairs are assisted by one to several nonbreeding helpers. This book provides extensive data on fecundity, survivorship, relatedness, and dispersal to establish the demographic milieu and to address questions arising out of observed helping behavior--whom, how, when, and why the helpers help.
The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth

The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth

Glen Van Brummelen

The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth is the first major history in English of the origins and early development of trigonometry. Glen Van Brummelen identifies the earliest known trigonometric precursors in ancient Egypt, Babylon, and Greece, and he examines the revolutionary discoveries of Hipparchus, the Greek astronomer believed to have been the first to make systematic use of trigonometry in the second century BC while studying the motions of the stars. The book traces trigonometry's development into a full-fledged mathematical discipline in India and Islam; explores its applications to such areas as geography and seafaring navigation in the European Middle Ages and Renaissance; and shows how trigonometry retained its ancient roots at the same time that it became an important part of the foundation of modern mathematics. The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth looks at the controversies as well, including disputes over whether Hipparchus was indeed the father of trigonometry, whether Indian trigonometry is original or derived from the Greeks, and the extent to which Western science is indebted to Islamic trigonometry and astronomy. The book also features extended excerpts of translations of original texts, and detailed yet accessible explanations of the mathematics in them. No other book on trigonometry offers the historical breadth, analytical depth, and coverage of non-Western mathematics that readers will find in The Mathematics of the Heavens and the Earth.

Heavenly Mathematics traces the rich history of spherical trigonometry, revealing how the cultures of classical Greece, medieval Islam, and the modern West used this forgotten art to chart the heavens and the Earth. Once at the heart of astronomy and ocean-going navigation for two millennia, the discipline was also a mainstay of mathematics education for centuries and taught widely until the 1950s. Glen Van Brummelen explores this exquisite branch of mathematics and its role in ancient astronomy, geography, and cartography; Islamic religious rituals; celestial navigation; polyhedra; stereographic projection; and more. He conveys the sheer beauty of spherical trigonometry, providing readers with a new appreciation of its elegant proofs and often surprising conclusions. Heavenly Mathematics is illustrated throughout with stunning historical images and informative drawings and diagrams. This unique compendium also features easy-to-use appendixes as well as exercises that originally appeared in textbooks from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries.

An interdisciplinary history of trigonometry from the mid-sixteenth century to the early twentiethThe Doctrine of Triangles offers an interdisciplinary history of trigonometry that spans four centuries, starting in 1550 and concluding in the 1900s. Glen Van Brummelen tells the story of trigonometry as it evolved from an instrument for understanding the heavens to a practical tool, used in fields such as surveying and navigation. In Europe, China, and America, trigonometry aided and was itself transformed by concurrent mathematical revolutions, as well as the rise of science and technology.Following its uses in mid-sixteenth-century Europe as the "foot of the ladder to the stars" and the mathematical helpmate of astronomy, trigonometry became a ubiquitous tool for modeling various phenomena, including animal populations and sound waves. In the late sixteenth century, trigonometry increasingly entered the physical world through the practical disciplines, and its societal reach expanded with the invention of logarithms. Calculus shifted mathematical reasoning from geometric to algebraic patterns of thought, and trigonometry’s participation in this new mathematical analysis grew, encouraging such innovations as complex numbers and non-Euclidean geometry. Meanwhile in China, trigonometry was evolving rapidly too, sometimes merging with indigenous forms of knowledge, and with Western discoveries. In the nineteenth century, trigonometry became even more integral to science and industry as a fundamental part of the science and engineering toolbox, and a staple subject in high school classrooms.A masterful combination of scholarly rigor and compelling narrative, The Doctrine of Triangles brings trigonometry’s rich historical past full circle into the modern era.

Welcome to the adventure of discovering your IDEAL me. No one book, no author can change your life. No magic formula or fairy dust will appear to make that happen. Only you can do that. Following your divine call will not guarantee happiness, but that call to your IDEAL life is like a song that you can't get out of your head. Once the call has been heard, there is no satisfaction for those who choose not to answer. This book is not for everyone, but it may be for you.Glen Guyton works with individuals trying to make sense of the culture in which they live so that they can live their IDEAL lives-the subject of this book. Be encouraged to live your life and love the life you live. This book is a curated collection of Glen's thoughts and experiences. Glen has worked with young people from a variety of backgrounds. After spending more than half his life leading people in my roles such as an Air Force officer, business person, teacher, pastor, and father, Glen has picked up a little wisdom here and there that he shares in this book. So how should you read this book? The best way is to pick one or two pieces of information and take action. Skim it, scan it, or read it word for word; it doesn't matter. As you read, from time to time lay the book aside; then immediately apply what you have learned. After a period of time, come back, pick up one or two pieces of information relevant to your journey; then apply those. Repeat as needed. Life is a series of ups and downs. We go through different phases of need as we mature or as our circumstances change. Pick whatever chapter or guidance that you need at the time. There are no rules to reading this book, just like there are not set rules defining what your version of the IDEAL life is. This book is just one tool to help you improve your life. Ultimately, you will be the champion of your own success and Glen is happy to be along for the ride.

The Plant Advantage: How I Lost Half My Weight on The Fuel Plus Fortification Diet
Benji Kurtz is on the side of science. For twenty years he struggled with obesity; he experimented with all kinds of catchy, fad diets that had everything going for them but scientific truth. In The Plant Advantage, he explains how a movie changed his life, inspiring him to eat the way human beings were designed to eat. And he subsequently lost half his weight, from 260 pounds to 130, in eighteen months. Without struggling. In his thoughtful and sometimes comic analysis of nutrition and weight-loss, co-written with author Glen Merzer (Off the Reservation), Kurtz uses ample scientific evidence to explain the many advantages of a low-fat, plant-based, whole foods diet. But it's his own remarkable experience that seals the deal. "A delightful read for anyone who may be confused by the gibberish infusing the public discussion on food and health-In this very special book, Benji Kurtz speaks with a voice and personal conviction that is original and refreshingly honest. Kurtz honestly relates his uncertainties and confusion as he searched for an answer why he could not shed a large amount of excess body weight. Although not a scientist, he presents the scientific evidence with a reliability that is rare for a layperson. Even though I have been a researcher in this field for more than a half century, I found myself being his student as he sought answers to his unusually intuitive questions about the scientific evidence. The Plant Advantage is a really good read for anyone caught in the squeeze between what is real and what is not on matters of food and health."-Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Author, The China Study, and Whole and Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Sciences, Cornell University "Together with Glen Merzer, Benji Kurtz has shared awareness of whole-food plant-based nutrition and epic personal transformation. This book concisely defines the science and skills enabling the lifestyle and nutritional literacy required for a long and healthy life." -Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D., author, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease "Benji Kurtz's personal journey is an inspiration, and his wisdom and practical information will help you maximize your own health. In our clinical research studies at the Physicians Committee, we see many people make wonderful transformations, and I hope you will read about his experiences and jump into your own journey toward better health. You, too, can become a success story "-Dr. Neal Barnard, Author, A Physician's Slimming Guide, and President, Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine "Benji Kurtz is the best kind of expert on weight-loss: someone who has LIVED the struggle and come out victorious Combined with wit, intelligence, and fantastic recipes, The Plant Advantage shows the reader how they can have his success too " -Lindsay S. Nixon, Author, The Happy Herbivore Cookbook Series "The odds of losing a large amount of weight and keeping it off are small. Most people fail because they do not take an effective approach. For all those that say it can't be done, Benji Kurtz presents a proven plan that is both successful and health promoting." -Alan Goldhamer, Director, TrueNorth Health Center "This book is a treasure. It is engaging, entertaining and enlightening. It is one of the rare "nutrition" books that is hard to put down. The story Benji Kurtz tells is one that millions of people can relate to. It is gives others hope for health. I wholeheartedly recommend reading it then sharing it with friends and family " -Brenda Davis, RD, Co-author, Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy, Plant-Based Diet, comprehensive and express editions

The history of Black-Jewish relations from the beginning of the twentieth century shows that, while they were sometimes partners of convenience, there was also a deep suspicion of each other that broke out into frequent public exchanges. During the twentieth century, the entanglements of both groups have, at times, provided an important impetus for social justice in the United States and, at other times, have been the cause of great tension. The Ocean Hill-Brownsville Conflict explores this fraught relationship, which is evident in the intellectual lives of these communities. The tension was as apparent in the life and works of Marcus Garvey, Richard Wright, and James Baldwin as it was in the exchanges between blacks and Jews in intellectual periodicals and journals in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. The Ocean Hill–Brownsville conflict was rooted in this tension and the longstanding differences over community control of school districts and racial preferences.
Secessionism and the European Union

Secessionism and the European Union

Secessionist (also called, nationalist, or pro-independence) political parties exist in many countries in the developed world; they raise—and then spend—a lot of money, win votes in elections, and their elected officials serve in seats in local, regional, and national parliaments. Yet, despite all of this effort, there has not been a successful case of secession since 1921 when the Irish Free State effectively seceded from the United Kingdom (UK). Perhaps the biggest issue is that these secessionist political parties have rarely been popular enough to form a government even amongst their core ethnic group. This is further compounded by the fact that secessionist parties have historically been unable to win support from immigrants or people outside their core ethnic and/or linguistic group. Given this context, four central questions are posed in this study including: whether—and also why—any of the secessionist parties have transitioned from ethnic-based to civic-based policy platforms? Why have these secessionist parties not yet achieved independence? And, what role does the European Union (EU) play in facilitating or deterring secession in independence-seeking regions within member states? This study examines three different cases—Flanders in Belgium, Scotland in the UK, and Catalonia in Spain—to investigate how secessionist political parties are approaching the issue of independence. All of the cases are different with respect to history, governmental structure, and economic situation. Yet all of the cases are similar in some ways—they are close to the same size (in terms of population), operate within mature democratic political systems, have distinct secessionist political parties, and all reside within member states of the EU. Categorically, in all cases, there are also shared influences of the ability of the region to secede: institutions, interests, and ideas.
