Frank Porter Graham (1886–1972) was one of the most consequential white southerners of the twentieth century. Born in Fayetteville and raised in Charlotte, Graham became an active and popular student leader at the University of North Carolina. After earning a graduate degree from Columbia University and serving as a marine during World War I, he taught history at UNC, and in 1930, he became the university's fifteenth president. Affectionately known as "Dr. Frank," Graham spent two decades overseeing UNC's development into a world-class public institution. But he regularly faced controversy, especially as he was increasingly drawn into national leadership on matters such as intellectual freedom and the rights of workers. As a southern liberal, Graham became a prominent New Dealer, negotiator, and briefly a U.S. senator. Graham's reputation for problem solving through compromise led him into service under several presidents as a United Nations mediator, and he was outspoken as a white southerner regarding civil rights. Brimming with fresh insights, this definitive biography reveals how a personally modest public servant took his place on the national and world stage and, along the way, helped transform North Carolina.

Over a 60-year career, Graham Greene was a prolific writer. The book details archival holdings of unpublished novels, short stories, plays, film scripts, journals, poetry, fragments of writing, and letters, as well as manuscripts and typescripts of published works. One Nation Under Graham

One Nation Under Graham

For centuries, particular readings of the biblical text have shaped the course of Western history. Scripture, used as a political totem for those in power, gives divine weight to political agendas. This trajectory is particularly evident in the fiery career of Billy Graham, "America's evangelist." Graham's rhetoric, steeped in his political appropriation of Scripture, ultimately motivated the insertion of "under God" into the pledge of allegiance: his message of national repentance made its way to President Dwight Eisenhower, who converted it into legislation and changed history. America became self-consciously a nation under God, over against the world. One Nation under Graham investigates how one man's interpretation of the biblical books of Daniel and Revelation has impacted how the United States sees itself on a global and cosmic scale. Jonathan Redding argues that Graham rode the wave of American xenophobia to rebrand evangelical patriotism as essential to national stability and cosmic balance. A survey of Graham's influences reveals that, while Graham was far from the only Christian leader to preach gloom and doom, he was one of the first to make the theme publicly and profoundly American. Graham's influence and drive to make America a nation "under God" ensured that, with the recitation of the American pledge, his reading of Scripture would endure. Redding further shows the continued capacity of "under God" to equip contemporary leadership to leverage Christian faith for personal gain with a political base.Graham's response to major political and global events created a thoroughly American apocalyptic lens that continues to be used to give life and potency to biblical interpretations. In the same way that Daniel and Revelation warned of the dangers of unchecked political power and misplaced priorities, One Nation under Graham uses Graham's interpretations to urge all of us to consider under whom we serve and under what flag we kneel.

Conversations with Graham Swift is the first collection of interviews conducted with the author of the Booker Prize-winning novel Last Orders. Beginning in 1985 with Swift's arrival in New York to promote Waterland and concluding with an interview from 2016 that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald, the collection spans Swift's more than thirty-five-year career as a writer. The volume also includes interviews first printed in English as well as translated from the French or Spanish and covers a wide range of formats, from lengthier interviews published in standard academic journals, to those for radio, newspapers, and, more recently, podcasts. In these interviews, Graham Swift (b. 1949) offers insights into his life and career, including his friendships with other contemporary writers like Ted Hughes and the group of celebrated novelists who emerged in Britain during the eighties. With remarkable clarity, Swift discusses the themes of his novels and short stories: death, love, history, parent-child relationships, the power of the imagination, the role of storytelling, and the consequences of knowing. He also notes the influences, literary and personal, that have helped shape his writing career. While quite ordinary in his life and daily habits, Swift reveals his penetrating intellect and rich imagination-an imagination that can craft some of the most engaging and formally complex stories in the language.

'Examining Billy Graham's Theology of Evangelism' was written to advance an unbiased understanding of Billy Graham's theology and practice. Theological examination of Graham's sermons revealed four distinct eras in his theology and practice: -The Early-Early Graham (pre-1949) -The Early Graham (1949-1955) -The Middle Graham (1955-1965) -The Later Graham (1965-present) In each of these eras Graham portrayed a discernible and distinct approach to defining evangelism, theological nomenclature, and cooperative strategy. No literature on Billy Graham discusses, in combination, this evolution in Graham's theology and practice. You are invited to take a fresh look at the teaching and practice of this man who has touched millions of lives through the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I don't care how much or how little money you make-I want you to understand that there's only one place in the world where you can live a happy life, and that's inside your income. A family that's living beyond its means is simply a business that's losing money, and it's bound to go smash. -from "V: New York, December 8, 189-" Chicago pork magnate John Graham is a thorough success in business... except when it comes to his ne'er-do-well son Pierrepont, who never seems to need the end of his father's no-nonsense advice on being a boss, being a husband, and being a man. This delightful 1904 book-a sequel to Lorimer's 1901 Letters From a Self-Made Merchant to His Son-is ostensibly a work of fiction, taking the form of exasperated letters from Graham to his would-be prot g , but it's still a genuine source of down-home counsel on how to hire family (carefully), how to drink on the job (don't), when to apologize to a wife (always), and more. American journalist GEORGE HORACE LORIMER (1867-1937) was editor in chief of the Saturday Evening Post from 1899 to 1936, leading the magazine to the heights of its popularity. He is also the author of False Gods (1906).
