The kitchen was one place where their imagination and skill could have free rein and full expression, and they often excelled."Recipes will get lost, tampered with, stolen, and in most cases their creators remain unknown, but not in this book. White Southern Mistress Minnie C. Fox was quick to recognize the outstanding recipes created by the black cooks around her and did what most white women would not have done, she compiled them.In this book, you will find over 300 recipes from black cooks and the friends and families of Fox. From breads, to biscuits, soups, hams, fish, oysters, croquettes and so much more. These recipes are not just any recipes, they are the recipes of hundreds of loving mothers and grandmothers, who derived pleasure from the simple act of cooking. And what's more, these recipes can be tried today. The Blue Grass Cook Book is not just any cookbook, it is one that holds recipes and history in its pages, detailing the beginnings of southern hospitality and cuisine.

Enjoy Walt Whitman's classic poetry collection, Leaves of Grass, in this beautiful gift format with printed page edges. Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass is a clarion call to his country's people to join together in the "crowning growth of the United States". Its patriotic zeal made him a symbol of democracy in his country long before he achieved fame there as a poet. The intense emotion of Whitman's verse celebrates the regenerative power of nature and the immortal divinity of the human soul. His passionate beliefs are evident throughout this volume - in the radical "I Sing the Body Electric"; the patriotic "I Hear America Singing"; and the romantic "As if a Phantom Caress'd Me". This collection (the so-called "deathbed" edition of 1892) represents the culmination of Whitman's life's work and contains more than 400 poems.

______________ 'A delight' - Spectator 'An entrancing memoir' - Jane Shilling, New Statesman 'A wonderful journey beautifully told, and like all great memoirs, remains with the reader like the echo of friendship' - Independent on Sunday ______________ The new memoir from the author of Maidens' Trip and The Great Western Beach; a remarkable story of a young woman growing up against the backdrop of the Second World War, and postwar life in India, Paris and bohemian Chelsea Uprooted from her beloved Great Western Beach, Emma Smith moves with her family from Newquay to the Devonshire village of Crapstone. But the dust has hardly settled when tragedy strikes, and Emma’s father, a DSO-decorated hero of the Great War, is so frustrated by the hardship of life as a lowly bank clerk and by his thwarted artistic ambitions that he suffers a catastrophic breakdown - from which disaster Emma's resourceful mother rallies courageously. Then, in 1939, the war again becomes a reality. Emma’s sister Pam at once enlists with the WAAF and Jim, her politically minded brother, after initially declaring himself a pacifist, joins the RAF. But what should Emma, aged only sixteen, do? Secretarial collage equips her for a job with MI5 but it’s dull work and Emma yearns for fresh air. She is rescued by a scheme taking on girls as crew for canal boats. Freedom! The war over, Emma travels to India with a documentary film company, lives in Chelsea, falls in love in France and spends time in Paris where she sets about mending a broken heart by writing her first novel. Sitting beside the Seine during a heatwave with her typewriter on her knees, she is unwittingly snapped by legendary photographer Robert Doisneau. The zest, thirst for life and buoyant spirits of Emma, as she recalls in evocative detail the quality of England in the thirties and forties give As Green as Grass the feel of a ready-made classic. ______________ 'Evocative and arresting ... hugely engaging' - Daily Express 'One envies Emma Smith's precise and sly humour in her portrait of life' - Michael Ondaatjie 'Optimistic, generous and thoroughly enjoyable' - Giulia Rhodes, Sunday Express 'I've rarely come across a more gripping childhood memoir' - Diana Athill 'A cracking memoir' - Bel Mooney, Daily Mail ______________

In response to Ralph Waldo Emerson's call for the United States to have its own unique poetic voice, Walt Whitman rose to the challenge to create what would ultimately be his most profound work. Taking its title from the colloquial term "grass", meaning a work of minor value, Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" is anything but that. Over his lifetime Whitman would continue to expand and revise his most famous work up until his death in 1892. The first edition contained just twelve poems, significantly smaller compared to the final "deathbed" edition, reproduced here, which included over 400. "Leaves of Grass" is unique for its celebration of the sensual pleasures of life in a time when such an attitude was considered immoral. A departure from a poetic tradition which relied on symbolism, allegory, and meditation on the religious and spiritual, "Leaves of Grass" instead focused on nature and the individual's role in it. Initial reception of the work was quite controversial, but over time this collection of poetry has come to be acknowledged as one of the truly great American works of literature. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and includes an introduction by John Burroughs.

An unabridged collection of classic verse speaking profoundly into the lives of readers today. Leaves of Grass, featuring beloved poems such as "Oh Captain My Captain " and "Song of Myself," was met with both scathing criticism and glowing praise when it was originally published in 1855. Arguably the best historical commentator of the nineteenth century, Walt Whitman continues to inspire readers today. The most inclusive writer one might ever come across, Whitman wrote of laborers, mechanics, soldiers, mothers, carpenters, and prostitutes; this inclusivity stirred up controversy and earned bans, but also gained the attention of other literary greats like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. At a time when conversations concerning politics, race, class, and sexuality are at an all time high, Leaves of Grass which addresses the experience of multitudes, will resonate with readers today perhaps even more profoundly than in Whitman's own time. Born in 1819, Walt Whitman became one of America's best-known poets before his death in 1892. Often called the "father of free verse," Whitman spent much of his life revising and augmenting his "special and entire self-chosen poetic utterance," Leaves of Grass.
