Highly respected by her peers and hugely influential on the subsequent generation of artists, the British artist Helen Chadwick produced a wideranging body of work in a variety of media, which shifted from early institutional and architectural critique to operatic installations, and to photographic projects and sculptures. Stephen Walker looks behind this apparent variety, identifying a consistent range of interests - ranging from classical Greek through to sub-particle physics - that accompanied and supported Chadwick's realised work. Although she enjoyed significant critical attention in her lifetime, this is the first study to explore the rich archive which informed her oeuvre. Critical of the impact that limiting political, philosophical and scientific constructions have on identity, Chadwick's work can offer insights into the relationship between body and space; self and world; art and science; artifice and nature; theory and practice; the creative self and the creative process. Dismantling and reassembling her ideas, this book combines a close reading of Chadwick's notebooks and research with broader speculation regarding their ongoing relevance for artistic and architectural work today.

The first-ever monograph on painter Helen Marden, covering over forty years of her work. This is the first ever monograph to present the full oeuvre of the painter Helen Marden. The book documents her development from the abstracted, dark, and muted landscapes of the early 1980s, through the vibrantly hued, more lyrical work of the 1990s and early 2000s, to the most recent Grief paintings, made in response to the passing of her husband, the artist Brice Marden. Over the last decade, Marden has attached found objects—primarily shells collected from around the world—to the surfaces of her works, giving them a unique texture and providing an index of her travels. A new essay by Anna Godbersen discusses the development of Marden’s practice in concert with changes in her personal life, her voyages around the globe, and her close relationships with key figures in the art world. Helen Buchholtz (1877-1953) hatte zeitlebens viele Freiheiten: Sie war finanziell unabhangig, familiar ungebunden und pflegte einen extravaganten Lebensstil. Mit ihrer etwas jungeren Kollegin Lou Koster zahlt sie zu den ersten Komponistinnen Luxemburgs. Buchholtz beschritt einen eigenwilligen Lebensweg zwischen zwei Welten - in mehrerlei Hinsicht: Als Tochter aus gutburgerlichem Hause emanzipierte sie sich von dem vorgezeichneten Lebensweg. Ohne akademische Musikausbildung war ihr das Komponieren stets eine Passion, allerdings mit professionellem Anspruch. In ihrem Werk ging sie nationalen Traditionslinien nach, verfolgte aber gleichermassen eigene kunstlerische Ideen. Unter ihren 140 abgeschlossenen Kompositionen finden sich zeittypische Orchestermarsche ebenso wie zeituntypische Klaviersonaten. Zeitlich erstreckt sich ihr Wirken zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen; geografisch auf Luxemburg und Wiesbaden. Als erste Monografie uber Helen Buchholtz geht das vorliegende Buch dem Leben und Werk einer der spannendsten Frauengestalten Luxemburgs nach und zeichnet ein Panorama der Musik- und Kulturgeschichte des Grossherzogtums in der ersten Halfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) war wegweisend für die US-amerikanische Nachkriegskunst. English Edition Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) was a pioneer of post-war American art. Her experimental work with paint and canvas made her one of the most significant artists of Abstract Expressionism.
