Beach of Heaven

Beach of Heaven

Irene Martin

Washington State University Press
1997
pokkari
Beach of Heaven is a history of the earliest settled areas in Washington. As the birthplace of both the state's canned salmon industry and the cooperative extension movement, as well as Congresswoman Julia Butler Hansen, Wahkiakum County has a historical significance far beyond its borders. Today it stands at the cusp of major change as the rural occupations of fishing, farming, and logging, upon which the country has traditionally depended, suffer from outside influences and demographic shifts. Beach of Heaven documents these changes and looks ahead to future possibilities. This book is much more than a county history. It is a story of the development of a place, of the settlement of ethnic groups, of the establishment of social and transportation networks that made life livable in a wild and forested country. As Irene Martin writes, Beach of Heaven is "an emotional engagement with the place we call home." It will resonate for all who have a passion for the little places, the rural areas, the community values that are gradually passing into history.

Inappropriate Behaviour has a magnetism as alluring as the sirens, summoning readers to revel in the coy seduction that preludes desire, the truths women deny and the longing they supress, unleashed in startling moments of betrayal, loss, and reclamation. Mock widens the threshold--exposing a desire not only for touch, but for understanding, for family, for a love which satiates more than the physical appetite. With wry humour and tender intensity Mock unveils heroic acts of domestic courage which transform and confront modern marriages, divided loyalties and sexual politics as few contemporary writers have dared. Each of these 11 stories, whether haunting or heartbreaking, alights on the tongue ripe with the bittersweet perfection Eve enjoyed in sampling the forbidden fruit. Mock pushes the limits of emotional intimacy, tempting us to admit what we have guarded with precious secrecy--we want it all. In this collection, we may have found it.

Jocey believes that she will never have a friend, that others will always chase and make fun of her, as they did at school before she quit.Since her mother died and her father became a drifter, Jocey has lived with her grandmother, a washerwoman. When she's not helping Gram with laundry, she fills her lonely life with books and dreams. Mostly she dreams of Kansas and the farm her father abandoned there. On the farm, she could live in isolation—free from torment. Eventually she persuades Gram to go with her to Kansas.Life on the farm is not, however, what Jocey expected. Hard work was no surprise. But there are neighbors and traveling salesmen who cannot be avoided. Then there's Gram, who seems determined to be sickly. Jocey wonders if she made a terrible mistake, until she discovers that any girl can have friends, if she will open herself to others. And maybe even her cleft lip can be helped.

First published in 1985. The event model presented in this study, attempts a framework for integrating psychoanalytic and Piagetian psychologies centered in the notion that development occurs by the differentiation of self and nonself. Its aim is to understand phenomena conceptualized in psychoanalytic terms in a model based on this Piagetian perspective, or, in other words, to provide an object-relational model for the development of psychic structure analytic and Piagetian psychologies centered in the notion that development occurs by the differentiation of self and nonself.
Gordion Special Studies, Volume II – The Terracotta Figurines and Related Vessels
This book contains a detailed analytical catalogue of 171 terracotta figurines and figural vessels. These are represented in every period at Gordion from the Early Bronze Age. The majority dates from the Late Phrygian/Hellenistic period when there was a proliferation of imports from Greece. Gordion's long and rich history, from a Bronze Age center to a Phrygian capital to a market town and Graeco-Celtic center, makes it unique in the archaeological and historical record of central Turkey.
Hasanlu Special Studies, Volume I – A Decorated Breastplate from Hasanlu, Iran
Any consideration of the Iranian plateau must include the important site of Hasanlu in northern Iran. The Museum carried out excavations from 1956 through 1977. A major aspect of the research focused on the Iron Age settlement. This fortified town was attacked around 800 B.C. The attack and accompanying fire caused the rapid collapse of public buildings. Thus, the site provides a unique opportunity to examine a wide range of objects and materials still in the contexts in which they were stored.

This is as closely-knit an anthology as you are ever likely to see. It is as though a large, extended family were drawing on the same store of family stories, jokes, symbols, landscapes, animals, trees, language, and vernacular. How many snakes are in this book? How many foxes, possums? Fossils? And how very many coal mines? But it is not merely local references that unites these writers. There is a larger vision that ties these works together.

THE GIRL THAT GOD FELL TO: A woman's visions of God & His Army of Light saving souls. And how a deceased nun, petitioned for beatification helped Him do it. Spirits always surrounded Helena Carroll, the reason why eluded her, until one day while meditating, she connected with a spirit guide - Luther - who told her, "You are the reincarnated soul of Sr. Yvonne Beauvais. She lives again in you."Searching online, Helena was shocked to learn this French nun existed, lived a saintly life, and was awarded the French Legion of Honour for her courage during World War II. As a child, Yvonne wrote a letter to Jesus entreating Him to allow her do His will. Yvonne had a specific request... THE GIRL THAT GOD FELL TO tells the story of how an ordinary woman helped Jesus grant Yvonne her request, but it also tells another story: about how two women may have participated in Bible prophecy, and how it ended so catastrophically for one. A true story, THE GIRL THAT GOD FELL TO reads like a fantastic work of fiction, appearing too fantastic to be true, but is so unsettling, it begs the question - what if it is?
