By 23, the supremely confident Mary Jackson-Peale had become one of the most influential theatrical agents on London's prestigious West Side. But her self-indulgent lifestyle, which included a string of bi-sexual relationships, endless cocktails of booze and drugs, and the accidental manslaughter of her sex-craved boss, made her a felon on the run.To escape Scotland Yard's dragnet, Mary created a new identity and fled to America with no money, no contacts, and the guilt that her mother's partner had been imprisoned for her indiscretions. Slowly but surely, she overcame these obstacles -- and a few new ones -- to regain her mojo and become one of Broadway's most sought-after theatrical agents. Now, 37, and at the top of her theatrical game, she fell deeply in love with a handsome, romantic Venetian vintner. Ironically, her world would collapse with a bang that could be heard around the world.

Fort Jackson is a sprawling military base east of Columbia, South Carolina. With the impending entry of America into World War I, city fathers recognized the country's need for military training camps and made a successful proposal to the US Army for construction of a camp near Columbia. Named after Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans and the seventh US president, Camp Jackson soon became the home of the famous 81st "Wildcat" Division and, later, the 5th Infantry Division. Over time, the camp's prospects waned, but the advent of another world war brought renewed interest in the camp and its eventual designation as Fort Jackson in 1940. Fort Jackson has been instrumental in the mobilization and training of troops for service in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Global War on Terror. Today, Fort Jackson is the Army's premier basic training installation, responsible for over 50 percent of Army trainees each year.
Shirley Jackson, Influences and Confluences
The popularity of such widely known works as "The Lottery" and The Haunting of Hill House has tended to obscure the extent of Shirley Jackson's literary output, which includes six novels, a prodigious number of short stories, and two volumes of domestic sketches. Organized around the themes of influence and intertextuality, this collection places Jackson firmly within the literary cohort of the 1950s. The contributors investigate the work that informed her own fiction and discuss how Jackson inspired writers of literature and film. The collection begins with essays that tease out what Jackson's writing owes to the weird tale, detective fiction, the supernatural tradition, and folklore, among other influences. The focus then shifts to Jackson's place in American literature and the impact of her work on women's writing, campus literature, and the graphic novelist Alison Bechdel. The final two essays examine adaptations of The Haunting of Hill House and Jackson's influence on contemporary American horror cinema. Taken together, the essays offer convincing evidence that half a century following her death, readers and writers alike are still finding value in Jackson’s words.

'Ashley Jackson The Yorkshire Artist' contains a collection of paintings that have been personally chosen by the artist to bring together his personal memories and intimate reflections of the emotions and atmosphere that he has captured in each watercolour painting. As he explains, 'All artists paint what inspires them, what allows them to capture what they see with their eyes with their hands and heart. We all have differing inspirations, mediums and connections with our subject mine is the Yorkshire Moors.' From the open moorland of Marsden Moor to the inhabited landscape of Whitby, this book brims with what Ashley does best; capturing the atmospheric skies and drama of the landscape. As Ashley explains, 'I have strived throughout my life to witness and portray every mood swing of nature as she takes a stand against all that the elements throw at her, whether that be rain, wind, snow or fire.' You will truly find Ashley Jackson and his 'Yorkshire Mistress', as he calls the Yorkshire landscape, laid bare in these stunning paintings.
Michael Jackson, Inc.: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of a Billion-Dollar Empire
The surprising rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches story of how Michael Jackson grew a billion-dollar business. Michael Jackson is known by many as the greatest entertainer of all time, but he was also a revolutionary when it came to business. In addition to famously buying the Beatles' publishing catalogue, Jackson was one of the first pop stars to launch his own clothing line, record label, sneakers, and video games--creating a fundamental shift in the monetization of fame and paving the way for entertainer-entrepreneurs like Jay Z and Diddy. All told, Jackson earned more than $1.1 billion in his solo career, and the assets he built in life have earned more than $700 million in the five years since his death--more than any other solo music act over that time. Michael Jackson, Inc. reveals the incredible rise, fall, and rise again of Michael Jackson's fortune--driven by the unmatched perfectionism of the King of Pop. Forbes senior editor Zack O'Malley Greenburg uncovers never-before-told stories from interviews with more than 100 people, including music industry veterans Berry Gordy, John Branca, and Walter Yetnikoff; artists 50 Cent, Sheryl Crow, and Jon Bon Jovi; and members of the Jackson family. Other insights come from court documents and Jackson's private notes, some of them previously unpublished. Through Greenburg's novelistic telling, a clear picture emerges of Jackson's early years, his rise to international superstardom, his decline--fueled by demons internal and external, as well as the dissolution of the team that helped him execute his best business moves--and, finally, his financial life after death. Underlying Jackson's unique history is the complex but universal tale of the effects of wealth and fame on the human psyche. A valuable case study for generations of entertainers to come and for anyone interested in show business, Michael Jackson, Inc. tells the story of a man whose financial feats, once obscured by his late-life travails, have become an enduring legacy.

Donald Barr Chidsey brings his amazing and widely acknowledged skills as a popular historian to bear on one of those controversial American wars-perplexing, colorful, at times brutal, often devastating. It was in protest against the war with Mexico that Henry David Thoreau refused to pay his poll tax, and wrote his famous essay "Civil Disobedience." In extraordinarily vivid terms, Chidsey re-creates the wanton massacre of a whole company of American troops, the heroic defense and fall of the Alamo, the dramatic battles of Buena Vista and Vera Cruz, and the invasion of Mexico, culminating in the storming of Chapultepec and entrance into Mexico City itself. Sam Houston, the enigmatic and powerful Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Zachary Taylor, Jose Herrera, General Winfield Scott, James K. Polk, and others in the forefront of battles and behind the scenes, and here, too-seen with all the intimate detail that has made Donald Barr Chidsey unsurpassed in his field.
