James Wm. McClendon, Jr. (1924-2000) was the most important ""baptist"" theologian of the twentieth century. McClendon crafted a systematic theology that grew out of the immediacy of preaching the text, refused to succumb to the pressures of individualism, and lamented the stunted public witness of a fractured Protestant ecclesiology. This third and final volume of his Collected Works provides a compendium of McClendon's sermons - examples of what he called ""first-order"" theology in action. While McClendon was predominantly known as a philosophical theologian, he persisted in the belief that the theology that mattered most occurred in ordinary congregations seeking to bear faithful witness in the world. The sermons in this collection - many rarely seen and never before published - provide an important window into McClendon's own theology and witness to his convictions about theology's purpose and end. This third volume serves as an invaluable resource for ministers, students, and theologians who seek a fuller understanding of McClendon's ""baptist"" theology.
Threads of Peace: How Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Changed the World
"Inviting and original." --Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Mohandas Gandhi and Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. both shook and changed the world in their quest for peace among all people, but what threads connected these great activists together in their shared goal of social revolution? A lawyer and activist, tiny of stature with giant ideas, in British-ruled India at the beginning of the 20th century. A minister from Georgia with a thunderous voice and hopes for peace at the height of the civil rights movement in America. Born more than a half-century apart, with seemingly little in common except one shared wish, both would go on to be icons of peaceful resistance and human decency. Both preached love for all human beings, regardless of race or religion. Both believed that freedom and justice were won by not one, but many. Both met their ends in the most unpeaceful of ways--assassination. But what led them down the path of peace? How did their experiences parallel...and diverge? Threads of Peace keenly examines and celebrates these extraordinary activists' lives, the threads that connect them, and the threads of peace they laid throughout the world, for us to pick up, and weave together.

To know Puss Junior once is to love him forever That's the way everyone feels about this adventurous cat who is the son of a very famous father, Puss in Boots. In the Puss in Boots, Jr series of ten books written by David Cory and originally published in 1917-1922, Puss Junior discovers that he is the son of the illustrious Puss in Boots and he begins a journey across Mother Goose Land to find his famous father. Along the way, Puss Junior meets characters from children's fiction and nursery rhymes, helps the weak and downtrodden, and learns something about life from everyone he meets.Puss Junior actually finds his father in Book Two, but the books were so popular that David Cory continued to write eight more adventures. In Book 10, Puss Junior flies with Mother Goose on her Gander, meets Tommy Tittle Mouse, ten Boy Scouts, Dr. Austen, Cinderella, Little Nannie Ettigoat, and Yankee Doodle Dandy. He travels to Babylon, Boston, and the Moon. He makes a speech, swordfights a bully, and tells stories by the fireplace. And, of course, Puss Junior meets the Man in the Moon. The original illustrations by Elizabeth Babcock are included in the stories, enlarged so they can be colored with colored pencils or crayons. The Puss in Boots, Jr books are lovely reminders that simple words can awaken the imaginations of children and adults alike, just as they did one hundred years ago. The original stories have been edited to change archaic words and references. Reading level is second grade but much younger children will enjoy hearing the stories read to them.

The Pragmatism and Prejudice of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
This book investigates the extent to which various scholarly labels are appropriate for the work of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. As Louis Menand wrote, “Holmes has been called a formalist, a positivist, a utilitarian, a realist, a historicist, a pragmatist, (not to mention a nihilist).” Each of the eight chapters investigates one label, analyzes the secondary texts that support the use of the term to characterize Holmes’s philosophy, and takes a stand on whether or not the category is appropriate for Holmes by assessing his judicial and nonjudicial publications, including his books, articles, and posthumously published correspondences. The thrust of the collection as a whole, nevertheless, bends toward the stand that Holmes is a pragmatist in his jurisprudence, ethics, and politics. The final chapter makes that case explicitly. Edited by Seth Vannatta, this book will be of particular interest to students and faculty working in law, jurisprudence, philosophy, intellectual history, American Studies, political science, and constitutional theory.

Above and Beyond: The Incredible Story of Frank Luke Jr., Arizona's Medal of Honor Flying Ace of the First World War
Above and Beyond is the incredible true story of Frank Luke Jr., the first aviator to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1897, Luke was an adventurous young man who was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. When America entered the First World War in 1917, Luke became a fighter pilot in the newly-formed U.S. Army Air Service and was soon serving with a combat squadron in France. Seen as a "high-strung, excitable boy," scorned by his squadron mates and frequently at odds with his commanders, "Above and Beyond" tells the story of how Luke soon became one of the most revered fighter aces on the Western Front. Exhibiting great audacity and skill in combat, he quickly racked up an impressive number of air-to-air victories, many of them against heavily-defended observation balloons which few pilots dared to attack. "Above and Beyond" chronicles Luke's most daring mission of all on September 29, 1918, which cost him his life, and for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

John Nash, Jr.: The Life and Legacy of One of America's Most Influential Mathematicians
*Includes pictures *Includes Nash's quotes about his own life and career *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "In madness, I thought I was the most important person in the world." - John Nash, Jr. In 2001, the critically acclaimed film A Beautiful Mind introduced millions to John Nash, Jr., one of America's most important 20th century mathematicians, nearly 50 years after he had won a Nobel prize for his work. Naturally, most viewers of the movie will remember a prodigy suffering from paranoid schizophrenia while overlooking how the man's innovative studies and works had a major influence on everything from economics to biology, cryptography, artificial intelligence, and political philosophy. The "Nash equilibrium," a theory he developed when he was still a student in his 20s, has also affected games, military doctrine, and computing. Nash was still doing groundbreaking work and was in the prime of his life when he began demonstrating all kinds of odd behavior, initially alarming his wife Alicia and then stunning the academic world with an incoherent lecture in 1959. As it turned out, he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, which made him see things and believe in wild conspiracies like a national communist takeover by men wearing red ties. For nearly a decade after the diagnosis, Nash was treated in hospitals with various kinds of medication, including shock therapy, and Nash himself termed his mental health issues as making him go "from scientific rationality of thinking into the delusional thinking characteristic of persons who are psychiatrically diagnosed as 'schizophrenic' or 'paranoid schizophrenic'". Over time, with a better understanding of the problem and treatment, Nash began to recover his mental faculties and get back to work in the last few decades of the 20th century. Fittingly, some of that work included coming up with hypotheses and theories about mental health issues, thereby having an impact on evolutionary psychology, and he was subsequently recognized with a countless number of awards for both his past and present work. Indeed, when he died in a car accident in May 2015 at the age of 86, he was returning from Norway, where he had been given the Abel Prize, awarded by the Norwegian government to outstanding mathematicians. John Nash, Jr.: The Life and Legacy of One of America's Most Influential Mathematicians chronicles the life and work of Nash and the impact he had on math and economics. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Nash like never before.
