The Intimate Animal: The Science of Sex, Fidelity, and Why We Live and Die for Love
In an eye-opening exploration of the most powerful force that drives our species, Kinsey Institute Director Dr. Justin Garcia illuminates the mysteries of how we date, mate and navigate our love lives. "The best book on modern mating." - David M. Buss, author of The Evolution of Desire. Why do we love who we love? Why do we stay in unfulfilling relationships, and stray from rewarding ones? Is it ever a good idea to open a relationship? How has the digital age impacted courtship? And why do some long-time couples crash and burn while others stay madly in love? In The Intimate Animal, one of the world's leading experts on the science of love and sex answers these questions and more, taking readers on a journey through the lifecycle of a romantic relationship, from the thrill of first attraction to the devotion that lasts decades. Intimacy is core to the human condition, a key pillar of a loving relationship, and an evolutionary drive. In fact, Dr. Garcia reveals that the need for intimacy -even more than sex drive- is key to our species' survival and flourishing. But therein lies the challenge. We evolved for social monogamy but not for sexual monogamy, yet these impulses are often at odds. Understanding this tension is the key to aligning our romantic choices with our true desires. Whether you're seeking that special someone, recovering from heartbreak, or trying to keep the passion alive, The Intimate Animal is the essential, research-backed guide to forging deeper, more intimate connections in these disconnected times.

Approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States will be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and that number is expected to rise according to the CDC. Interventions based on the science of applied behavior analysis (ABA) are one of the most common interventions for autistic individuals. One of the biggest problems facing the field of ABA-based interventions is ineffectiveness of intervention approaches due to the rigid application of ABA-based interventions. Progressive Approach to Applied Behavior Analysis provides practicing behavior analysts (e.g., BCBAs, BCaBAs, RBTs) and other clinicians with an in-depth introduction to a Progressive Approach to ABA and how it applies to common teaching methods within ABA-based interventions. This includes research and guidelines for implementing a Progressive Approach to ABA, potentially increasing the likelihood of meaningful outcomes for individuals diagnosed with ASD. This will become the guide for practitioners on how to use clinical judgment and in-the-moment assessment across various procedures.
Shit My Dad Says

Shit My Dad Says

Justin Halpern

'At 28 years old, I found myself living at home, with my 73-year-old father. As a child, my father never minced words, and when I screwed up, he had a way of cutting right through the bullshit and pointing out exactly why I was being an idiot. When I moved back in I was still, for the most part, an idiot. But this time, I was smart enough to write down all the things he said to me…' Meet Justin Halpern and his dad. Almost 1.5 million people follow Mr Halpern’s philosophical musings every day on Twitter, and in this book, his son weaves a brilliantly funny, touching coming-of-age memoir around the best of his sayings. What emerges is a chaotic, hilarious, true portrait of a father and son relationship from a major new comic voice. As Justin says at one point, his dad is ‘like Socrates, but angrier, and with worse hair’; and this is the sort of shit he says… ‘You know, sometimes it’s nice having you around. But now ain’t one of those times. Now gimmie the remote, we’re not watching this bullshit.’ ‘Happy Birthday, I didn’t get you a present… Oh, mom got you one? Well, that’s from me then, too – unless it’s shitty.’ ‘Your brother brought his baby over this morning. He told me it could stand. It couldn’t stand for shit. Just sat there. Big let down.’ ‘The worst thing you can be is a liar . . . Okay, fine, yes, the worst thing you can be is a Nazi, but THEN, number two is liar. Nazi 1, Liar 2.’ ‘Why the f**k would I want to live to 100? I’m 73 and shit’s starting to get boring. By the way, there’s no money left when I go, just fyi.’
Global Poverty

Global Poverty

Justin Thacker

SCM Press

While a number of secular philosophers have written on global poverty, theologians have either steered clear entirely or simply mimicked the political analysis currently on offer. Christian authors have argued either for a free market solution to global poverty or for a radical reform of global capitalism as the best approach, but the theological underpinnings of such conclusions are noticeable by their absence. Justin Thacker offers a new way forward. He suggests deeply theological answers to questions around the effect of capitalism on global poverty and whether aid is really a sustainable long term solution for the world’s poor. This book will challenge theologians, church leaders and congregations to consider much more seriously the huge implications of faith and theology on our attitude to those who live in extreme poverty.

Pentecostals and Charismatics in Britain
Although part of a worldwide Christian spirituality, Pentecostals and Charismatics in the UK are rooted in British religiosity dating back to at least the 1920s. However, the emergence of migrant communities from the Caribbean and Africa since the 1950s has tended to attract popular attention and consequentially has come to represent the popular public face of Pentecostals and Charismatics in Britain. Latterly, however, an intellectual base has begun resisting the anti-intellectual reputation that has attached itself to Pentecostalism. This book draws upon the scholarship of eminent academics and practitioners in the field of Pentecostal and Charismatic studies, who together consider the history of pentecostal and charismatic movements, their relationship with mainline Christian churches and their engagement with the social, economic and political world. Topics covered include: the theological and doctrinal marks in British Pentecostalism, Anglican-Pentecostal relations, and the impact of the Vineyard movement on Charismatic and Pentecostal worship in the UK. Contributors include: Professor Anne E. Dyer (Mattersey Hall), Professor William K. Kay (Chester University), Professor David Hilborn, (Moorlands College), Dr R. David Muir (University of Roehampton) and Dr Babatunde A. Adedibu (Redeemed Christian Bible College, Nigeria). With a foreword by Justin Welby.

What are the key questions of the First Letter of Peter, how does it offer questions and challenges for us today and ultimately how does it speak to readers 2000 years after it was composed? Justin Welby, Jennifer Strawbridge and Abigail Harries Martin develop the expositions offered by Archbishop Justin at the 2022 Lambeth Conference to explore the key themes from 1 Peter and draw out questions and challenges from 1 Peter for today’s church and world. Acknowledging that key words and phrases from 1 Peter are understood differently in different contexts – such as language of suffering, definitions of holiness, and how we describe hope - this volume also innovatively draws in voices from more than 20 countries including Kenya, Mozambique, the USA, Malaysia, DRC, Pakistan, and New Zealand. The volume concludes with five short reflections on the epistle from Isabelle Hamley, Paul Swarup, Esther Mombo and Godfrey Adera, Paulo Ueti and Jennifer Strawbridge.
The Bishop and the Baptized

The Bishop and the Baptized

Justin Pottinger

SCM PRESS
2025
nidottu
This unique text poses serious questions about the way the Church of England is structured, how dioceses are run and the role of bishops through the lens of liturgical theology. In The Bishop and the Baptized, Justin Pottinger argues that baptismal ecclesiology has had more influence on the Ordinal of the Church of England than the Episcopal Church. As arguably the key document for understanding Anglican ecclesiology, the Ordinal affirms the importance of the bishop ordaining in the context of a Eucharist, with the liturgical action indicating the ontology and praxis of the bishop’s ministry in the daily life of the Church. The liturgy, placing the bishop within the eucharistic congregation, defines the ontology and praxis of the bishop’s ministry. Managerial modes and financial pressures have shaped recent debates, but the ordinal offers an alternative model of leadership in the shepherd metaphor. The diaconal nature of episcopal ministry, seen in the ordinal’s innovation of foot washing and the giving of the pastoral staff, is applied to the discernment and training of candidates for episcopal ministry, and the culture and shape of the life of the Church. This is an original contribution to these wider discussions, grounding responses in Anglican ecclesiology and the nature of episcopal ministry.

* shortlisted for both the Booker Prize and the Whitbread Novel Award, and winner of a Commonwealth Writers Prize *Set against the background of Nelson Mandela's release, IN EVERY FACE I MEET is the story of Anthony Northleach, and one intense, comic and horrifying day in his life. With the brio and intelligence for which he has been so widely praised, Justin Cartwright captures the life of an apparently ordinary Englishman - his marriage, his work, his sexual relationships and his connection to the events and sports of the world around him - until his day takes on the aspect first of a waking dream then of a true nightmare. Its horrifying conclusion, as Anthony Northleach runs into a south London prosititute, is shocking because the reader has come to see his story as both emblematic and savagely observant. Friendship, it seems, is all Anthony has left.

The Ottoman Peoples and the End of Empire

The Ottoman Peoples and the End of Empire

Justin McCarthy

Hodder Arnold
2001
nidottu
Here, historian Justin McCarthy tells the story of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and how this changed the lives of Slavs, Turks, Greeks, Arabs, and Armenians. The history has striking parallels, as well as direct links, to the crises in the Balkans today. For six centuries the Ottoman Empire united a diverse array of religious and ethnic groups, but its dissolution into distinct states left a tradition of nationalism and ethnic enmity in much of the Balkans and Middle East. In particular, the majority of the Muslim population of the Ottoman Balkans would never be integrated into the new states, as the 'national' characters of these states depended in part on the elimination of 'outsiders'. The new map of the Balkans and Middle East, which was largely the product of the victorious Allies after World War I, made little concession to practical concerns, such as access to seaports, or the rights of minorities. Only the Turkish Republic was able to thwart the plans of the conquerors by defeating military incursion. Ideal for undergraduates in history and political science, "The Ottoman Peoples and the End of Empire" provides the historical background to one of the central conflicts of our time.
