The New ABC's of Life for Children and Adults: Short Stories, Essays, and Poems Promoting Christian Concepts
The New ABC's of Life for Children and Adults: Short Stories, Essays, and Poems Promoting Christian Concepts is a revised and expanded edition of the book The ABC's of Life for Children and Adults: Short Stories, Essays, and Poems Promoting Christian Concepts (Xulon Press, 2003), written by the author under her maiden name. Both books depict Biblical principles and morals of life that society seems to have lost. By writing both books, the author hopes to teach children, and remind adults about values such as honesty, decency and a strong work ethic by emphasizing their importance throughout each book. "ABC's" is an acronym for: Abolishing apathetic attitudes; Building Biblical behavior patterns; and, Choosing Christ-like character. The author believes that through reminding ourselves and teaching our children about healthy attitudes and behavior, Christians could make a difference that would result in worldwide revival. She thinks, Christ-like character needs to be displayed and encouraged by Christians of all denominations. The ABC's of Life for Children and Adults is divided into three sections: 1. "Fiction for the Children"; 2. Nonfiction material, "Lessons Learned from Life's Realities", developed from experiences in the author's life, or the lives of individuals influential in her life; and, 3. "Moments from the Heart", which contains the lyrics of a collection of songs the author wrote. In addition, this section includes poetry written by either the author or her father. The ABC's of Life for Children and Adults concludes with a list of what the author entitles ABC's TO SUCCESSFUL LIVING. The list includes positive qualities, which the author hopes everyone reading either edition of her books would strive to possess. To The New ABC's of Life for Children and Adults, the author added "Questions for Reflection" at the end of each fiction and non-fiction story. Scripture references and their application have been added at the end of each fiction story for children. These additions were prompted by the number of parents who told the author they had used the earlier version of this book as a devotional guide with their children. The author also made revisions in the book chapters and included new stories and poems not previously published.

Brian Lumley, a Grand Master of Horror and author of the popular Necroscope(R) series, opens the collection with the tense "A Place of Waiting." The moors of Devon, England, are home to many ghosts, but none as fearsome as the red-eyed specter that refuses to accept his death. His only chance of release, however, comes at a terrible cost. Orson Scott Card puts a new spin on one of literature's most famous ghosts in "Hamlet's Father." What if the former King of Denmark was not killed by his treacherous brother for his crown, but by someone entirely unexpected as punishment for the darkest of crimes? Would his troubled son still seek revenge? The patrons of an Edinburgh tavern are introduced to a beverage with an unusual history in "The Haunted Single Malt" by Marvin Kaye, a clever and spooky tale about ghost stories and the people who love them. Tanith Lee offers "Strindberg's Ghost Sonata," a chilling story set in an alternate Russia. When a poor man is rescued from certain death by hospitable strangers, he discovers that he is not a guest in their haunted tenement building--he is a prisoner destined to become a sacrifice.

When readers first meet Ben, he is a sweet, intelligent, seemingly well-adjusted youngster. Fast forward to his teenage years, though, and Ben's life has spun out of control. Ben is swept along by an illness over which he has no control_one that results in runaway episodes, periods of homelessness, seven psychotic breaks, seven hospitalizations, and finally a diagnosis and treatment plan that begins to work. Schizophrenia strikes an estimated 1 in 100 people worldwide by some estimates, and yet understanding of the illness is lacking. Through Ben's experiences, and those of his mother and sister, who supported Ben through every stage of his illness and treatment, readers gain a better understanding of schizophrenia, as well as mental illness in general, and the way it affects individuals and families. Ben Behind His Voices encourages families to stay together and find strength while accepting the reality of a loved one's illness; it illustrates the delicate balance between letting go and staying involved. It honors the courage of anyone who suffers with mental illness and is trying to improve his life and participate in his own recovery. Ben Behind His Voices also reminds professionals in the psychiatric field that every patient who comes through their doors has a life, one that he has lost through no fault of his own. It shows what goes right when professionals treat the family as part of the recovery process, and help them find support, education, and acceptance. And it reminds readers that those who suffer from mental illness, and their families, deserve respect, concern, and dignity.

The Catholic University of America Press is pleased to present the second volume in our Catholic Women Writers series, which will attempt to bring new attention to prose work of Catholic women writers from the 19th and 20th centuries. Sheila Kaye-Smith was a best selling author who had published over 50 books in her lifetime, few of which remain in print since her death in 1956.The End of the House of Alard (1922) documents the choices made by the final generation of the aristocratic Alard family and the ways in which they, both willingly and reluctantly, bring the long line of their ancestral blood to a complete and sudden end. For some of them, the end of the Alard line is as painful to enact as it is for others to witness; for others it is welcomed as a necessary modernization or a true realignment toward religious integity and universal human truth. Some of the family's children yearn for individual liberty; others have it forced upon them. But none of them can find it under the burden of the Alard name and its crumbling estate. The End of the House of Alard is a novel about the human need for purpose, for a truth by which to live and for which to die. It is a novel about faith and idolatry, love and death, freedom and bondage, nature and grace. Put another way, it is about how human beings cannot escape the great challenge of salvation, of breaking free from false, man made gods in order to unite instead with the divine love of Christ. The novel's characters span a breadth of options on this spectrum and their various outlooks on life continue to reflect those available to us today.
