John Kenneth Galbraith: The Economist as Political Theorist is a comprehensive analysis of John Kenneth Galbraith's political economy, placing him within the development and evolution of twentieth century American liberalism. This book examines the continuing link between politics and economics in American political discourse by locating Galbraith in a framework of liberal and conservative theory, controversy, alternatives, and policy. By analyzing Galbraith's complex arguments, Waligorski addresses important issues about the content and nature of American political thought and policy conflict—including freedom, equality, inequality, individualism, democracy, the legitimate role of government, the nature of a good society, the structure of modern capitalism, and the failure of contemporary economic theory to serve as a guide to a better life. Many of the issues that drive contemporary politics today are simultaneously political, economic, and ideological. As an economist, political theorist, and cultural critic, Galbraith epitomizes this interconnection.

Counterpoint: Kenneth Burke and Aristotle's Theories of Rhetoric is a comprehensive study of the works of two of the most influential theorists of rhetoric in history. Written by L. Virginia Holland, the book explores the connections between the rhetorical theories of Kenneth Burke and Aristotle, examining the ways in which their ideas intersect and diverge. The book begins with an overview of the historical context in which the two theorists worked, and provides an in-depth analysis of their respective theories of rhetoric. Holland then explores the ways in which Burke and Aristotle's ideas can be used to analyze and understand contemporary rhetorical practices, including political discourse, advertising, and social media. Throughout the book, Holland emphasizes the importance of understanding the historical and cultural context in which rhetorical practices occur, and argues that the insights provided by Burke and Aristotle are still relevant and useful in today's world. Counterpoint: Kenneth Burke and Aristotle's Theories of Rhetoric is a valuable resource for scholars and students of rhetoric, communication, and philosophy, as well as anyone interested in understanding the role of language and persuasion in human communication. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Senator Kenneth McKellar

Senator Kenneth McKellar

Kenneth McKellar may have been born in Reconstruction-era Alabama, but for most of his life, he was a Tennessean through and through. After graduating from the University of Alabama with bachelor’s, master’s, and law degrees, McKellar traveled to Memphis for what he expected to be a brief visit with his brothers. That visit was the genesis of a lifelong career and permanent home in West Tennessee. After successfully practicing law in Memphis, Kenneth McKellar kicked off his political career in the US House of Representatives in 1911, where he served until 1917 before becoming a US senator. In his new biography of McKellar, Ray Hill traces the political career of Tennessee’s longest-serving senator and paints a colorful, nuanced portrait of the senator’s character and convictions. He chronicles McKellar's decades-long political contributions to Tennessee and the United States as a whole, from the beginnings of the Boss Crump political machine to McKellar’s historic victory as the first popularly elected US senator from Tennessee in 1916. Hill offers a balanced account of McKellar’s forty-two years in office, exploring his early Democratic successes under Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt, his steadfast support for the Tennessee Valley Authority, and his fierce, unwavering commitment to Tennessee and its people. As the only full-length biography of McKellar to date, Hill’s meticulously researched volume fills a significant gap in scholarship, shedding new light on the life and career of one of Tennessee’s most prominent political figures. Drawing on articles from more than one hundred US newspapers on McKellar’s life and politics, this biography will not only appeal to both scholars and students of US political science, but also offer a captivating story to all who love Tennessee and the state’s rich history.

This book focuses on the first edition of Kenneth Frampton’s Modern Architecture: A Critical History, published in 1980. It searches for clues and positions that will provide the reader with an unprecedented insight into the significance of Frampton’s historiography of modern architecture. It explores selected themes in line with Frampton’s many-faceted contribution, certain aspects of which can be noted between the lines of his ongoing criticism of the present-day architecture, which inevitably lead us to a critical understanding of the past, the modernity of architecture’s contemporaneity. The compiled chapters attempt to open a window onto the constellation of themes that allowed Frampton to hold on to his anteroom view of history even amidst the flow of time and flood of temporalities spanning 1980–2020. The book elucidates how Frampton’s critical presentation of the history of modern movement architecture and the book’s classificatory mode (periodization?) contribute to our understanding of the contemporaneity of architecture today.
