Feminism and the Abyss of Freedom

Feminism and the Abyss of Freedom

Linda M. G. Zerilli

University of Chicago Press
2005
sidottu
In contemporary feminist theory, the problem of feminine subjectivity persistently appears and reappears as the site that grounds all discussion of feminism. In "Feminism and the Abyss of Freedom," Linda M. G. Zerilli argues that the persistence of this subject-centered frame severely limits feminists' capacity to think imaginatively about the central problem of feminist theory and practice: a politics concerned with freedom. Offering both a discussion of feminism in its postmodern context and a critique of contemporary theory, Zerilli here challenges feminists to move away from a theory-based approach, which focuses on securing or contesting "women" as an analytic category of feminism, to one rooted in political action and judgment. She revisits the democratic problem of exclusion from participation in common affairs and elaborates a freedom-centered feminism as the political practice of beginning anew, world-building, and judging. In a series of case studies, Zerilli draws on the political thought of Hannah Arendt to articulate a nonsovereign conception of political freedom and to explore a variety of feminist understandings of freedom in the twentieth century, including ones proposed by Judith Butler, Monique Wittig, and the Milan Women's Bookstore Collective. In so doing, Zerilli hopes to retrieve what Arendt called feminism's lost treasure; the original and radical claim to political freedom.

Richard Cumberland and Natural law

Richard Cumberland and Natural law

Richard Cumberland and Natural Law represents the first major biographical sketch of Cumberland to appear in English. A critic and antagonist of Thomas Hobbes, a proto-Utilitarian and a man of the cloth, Richard Cumberland may be England's least recognised seventeenth century polymath, often overshadowed by the likes of John Bramhall and John Wallis. His magnum opus, De Legibus Naturae (On Natural Laws) stands in quality amongst the greatest works of natural philosophy and ethics of his time period. Here Kirk outlines Cumberland's significant philosophical contributions as well as situating him in his intellectual and historical context. She describes his life, his work as Bishop of Peterborough, and his pioneering contributions to natural law theory. Kirk also includes a chapter on the various editions of Cumberland's masterwork and the praise it received from his contemporaries. Richard Cumberland and Natural Law remains the foremost collection of biographical information of Richard Cumberland, as well as offering a comprehensive discussion of his theories.

Dramon is a magnificent, big, black horse created by the Deva of the Horse (metaphysical CEO of Horses) to inspire deeper understanding of our connection to all things animate and inanimate. Through unique circumstances, he meets Sam, a local cowboy, and immediately the adventure begins. Dramon takes Sam on rides of his life - spirit rides They adventure into the unknown where there is often no logic - no anything. Each spirit ride presents nuggets of "insight" to Sam. As he accumulates this understanding, old belief systems begin to crack open, allowing Sam to incorporate new ways of being and living. The powerful, heartfelt connections that Sam feels through Dramon show the "big picture" and his link to all-that-is, which is so much more expanded than the awareness that comes only through his physicality. What becomes obvious to Sam is his improved attitude towards others and, surprisingly, his relationship with all things. He experiences more peace and harmony in his day-to-day life.

Daughter of Wales, Rita Landi is both a tribute and a celebration. It is a tribute to those who uphold the great tradition of choral singing while, at the same time, it celebrates the life of one exceptional lady whose musical leadership garnered international acclaim as music "champions of the world" for one of the choirs she founded and conducted, the Rhyl and District Ladies Choir.Family was of prime importance to our heroine and this account of her life begins by introducing Rita Landi's closest relatives, as well as the family--the Oldfi elds of Bettws yn Rhos--into which she married. Against this backdrop her personal story unfolds, thereby offering the reader increased clarity concerning personalities and circumstances.Wales, long considered to be the "Land of Song" was, as it happened, the perfect place for Rita Landi to have been born. Reared in Llangenny near Crickhowell, South Wales, she spent her professional years as singer, voice teacher and choir conductor in Rhyl, North Wales, until her retirement in 1963 at the age of 82. Her musical life, which comprises the largest section of this book, is chronicled mainly through newspaper articles and personal photographs, augmented by many of her great-niece's cherished memories.
