This text is an exploration of the role of the Sacred Feminine in the Gnostic Pantheons, an analysis of the rite called the Mystery of the Bridal Chamber in the Gospel of Philip, and includes a comparison with the Upper & Lower Mothers in Kabbalah.
In 1867-68, a petty diplomatic dispute between Ethiopian emperor Tewodros II and Queen Victoria led to one of the strangest and most dramatic military campaigns in history. The British Indian Army, with 60,000 men, 30,000 elephants, mules and horses, and a bevy of ""embedded"" journalists, observers and translators -- as well as artists and photographers whose images of the campaign are reproduced in this book -- marched into the Ethiopian highlands, advancing on the mountain fortress of Magdala to rescue a small group of European hostages. The campaign, described by the British as the world's first major humanitarian intervention, saw the emperor's army annihilated, the hostages freed, and Ethiopian treasures shipped to British museums. But Ethiopian independence was retained. And yet despite its tremendous significance in the history of Afro-European relations, military strategy, and journalism, the small war has received little attention outside England and Ethiopia. Here, for the first time, Volker Matthies lays out the full story of the Magdala campaign in thorough detail, reprinting and discussing Ethiopian primary sources for a balanced account.

Mary Magdalene is one of the most influential symbols in the history of Christianity--yet, if you look in the Bible, you'll find only a handful of verses that speak of her. How did she become such a compelling saint in the face of such paltry evidence? In her effort to answer that question, Cynthia Bourgeault examines the Bible, church tradition, art, legend, and newly discovered texts to see what's there. The popular Arthurian stories of the Middle Ages depict the Holy Grail as Christ's cup from the last supper which was believed to have been endowed with miraculous healing powers and the ability to give eternal life to whomever drank from it. Strong female characters are a Wilkie Collins trait, and of the five main characters, three are strong motivated women, whilst the two men seem a little two dimensional. Adieu Maria Magdalena considers recurring themes and motifs from Mamma Andersson’s oeuvre and suggests complex and potent feelings related to loss. Finding inspiration in work by other Scandinavian painters, including Carl Fredrik Hill and Vilhelm Hammershøi, Andersson explores the tension between interiority and the external world, imbuing her compositions with a haunting stillness and introspection. Departing from earlier oil-on-board paintings, the paintings in this body of work primarily utilize canvas, a support that allows Andersson to create at a larger scale and expand compositional possibilities within the pictorial space. Employing trompe l’oeil, the artist produces a subtly claustrophobic effect in domestic spaces by layering uncanny interior scenes taken from her own home and her imagination, an interplay of surfaces and imagery that probes the nature of representation. This catalogue, published on the occasion of the artist’s first solo exhibition in Paris, at David Zwirner, and a companion to three other volumes of recent work, marks a metaphorical farewell to a previous phase in her life. The author Karl Ove Knausgaard, a frequent collaborator of Andersson’s, provides an accompanying text, offering an oneiric perspective on the artist’s evocation of layered dimensions.
