Natalie Murphy

The History Press Ltd

nidottu
This wonderful selection of images, drawn from a number of private and public collections, revisits the life of the people, and the places in which they lived, that have shaped Maesteg and the Llynfi Valley over the past 100 years. From images of the town hall and chapels - where the first performance of the Welsh national Anthem was sung at the Old Tabor Welsh Calvinistic Chapel in 1856 - to scenes representing the industrial heritage of the area, including mining for coal and tin and the blast furnaces as the Llynfi Works, Maesteg documents the vanished world of this once-bustling valley. An important pictorial record of this fascinating area of South Wales, this book will delight those who want to know more about the history of Maesteg and evoke memories of a bygone time for those who have lived here.

The Medici Women

The Medici Women

Natalie R. Tomas

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2003
sidottu
The Medici Women is a study of the women of the famous Medici family of Florence in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Natalie Tomas examines critically the changing contribution of the women in the Medici family to the eventual success of the Medici regime and their exercise of power within it; and contributes to our historical understanding of how women were able to wield power in late medieval and early modern Italy and Europe. Tomas takes a feminist approach that examines the experience of the Medici women within a critical framework of gender analysis, rather than biography. Using the relationship between gender and power as a vantage point, she analyzes the Medici women's uses of power and influence over time. She also analyzes the varied contemporary reactions to and representation of that power, and the manner in which the women's actions in the political sphere changed over the course of the century between republican and ducal rule (1434-1537). The narrative focuses especially on how women were able to exercise power, the constraints placed upon them, and how their gender intersected with the exercise of power and influence. Keeping the historiography to a minimum and explaining all unfamiliar Italian terms, Tomas makes her narrative clear and accessible to non-specialists; thus The Medici Women appeals to scholars of women's studies across disciplines and geographical boundaries.
Painting, Politics and the Struggle for the École de Paris, 1944–1964
Painting, Politics and the Struggle for the École de Paris, 1944-1964 is the first book dedicated to the postwar or 'nouvelle' École de Paris. It challenges the customary relegation of the École de Paris to the footnotes, not by arguing for some hitherto 'hidden' merit for the art and ideas associated with this school, but by establishing how and why the École de Paris was a highly significant vehicle for artistic and political debate. The book presents a sustained historical study of how this 'school' was constituted by the paintings of a diverse group of artists, by the combative field of art criticism, and by the curatorial policies of galleries and state exhibitions. By thoroughly mining the extensive resources of the newspaper and art journal press, gallery and government archives, artists' writings and interviews with surviving artists and art critics, the book traces the artists, exhibitions, and art critical debates that made the École de Paris a zone of aesthetic and political conflict. Through setting the École de Paris into its artistic, social, and political context, Natalie Adamson demonstrates how it functioned as the defining force in French postwar art in its defence of the tradition of easel painting, as well as an international point of reference for the expansion of modernism. In doing so, she presents a wholly new perspective on the vexed relationships between painting, politics, and national identity in France during the two decades following World War II.

Equality or Discrimination?

Equality or Discrimination?

Natalie Kimbrough

University Press of America
2006
nidottu
Equality or Discrimination? strives to close the gap in existing literature and address the often-neglected field of research on the discrimination of African Americans in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War. Despite the awakened interest of academics, authors, artists, and experts from a multitude of fields and the vast selection of literature on the Vietnam War and its veterans, African Americans have received little attention until now. Based on initial findings, Dr. Kimbrough analyzes key issues including whether or not African Americans experienced racial discrimination while serving. The study also focuses on whether the Vietnam War was indeed the first fully integrated conflict in which the U.S. attempted to engage in militarily without racial division. The findings contradict the traditional image of equality in the U.S. Armed Forces and provide the basis for the dissertation. Proving that soldiers in the Vietnam War were NOT treated equally, Dr. Kimbrough argues that African Americans experienced various forms of discrimination during a tumultuous time in U.S. history in which the opposite treatment of its soldiers was required.

The book's title refers to the latin phrase medici et medicamenta, or, "spiritual doctors and medicines," to indicate a unifying theme of this study.
A Critical Analysis of the Efficacy of Law as a Tool to Achieve Gender Equality
Law is often perceived as an instrument that can effect social change. While this might be so, it must be complemented by the necessary financial and human resources to make the law effective. Natalie Persadie explains that, among developing countries, such as Trinidad and Tobago, the achievement of legal advances for women—at either the international or national levels—is particularly difficult where practical measures are not subsequently implemented. This is, perhaps, attributable to a lack of political will. Important issues such as gender equality and domestic violence are not given priority and laws aimed at protecting women and promoting women’s rights are ineffective, scant, or unenforced. Gender justice can only be realized through a multilevel approach from above and, more importantly, from below, as women have the potential to effect real national and international legal and institutional change to ensure gender equality at both levels.

Archeologists have found cat remains buried with humans as far back as the tenth millennium BCE in Cyprus, and the Greek goddess Hecate is said to have regularly assumed the form of a cat. Hieroglyphics tell us that ancient Egyptians worshipped cat gods, and their queen Cleopatra had a kitty companion in her palace whom she called Tivali. A Chinese cat goddess called Li Shou is said to have protected farmers from mice, and Ai Apaec was a pre-Inca god with fangs and whiskers said to have descended from an even more ancient cat god. This book is more than a guide to ancient cat gods. It's an exploration of the way humans have observed, interacted with, learned from, and revered another species who share the Earth with us. Ancient folklore is rife with examples of animal cunning and compassion, and many humans invoked other species as spiritual guides or flat out worshipped them as gods. Arguably, cats are the most intriguing of animals because of how we can relate to them. Much like us, they are free spirits and adaptable survivors. We admire them for their dignity, independence, and ferocity. In this gorgeously illustrated guidebook, you'll meet 51 feline deities and demons from four geographical families around the world-Africa, Americas, Asia, and Europe. You'll also encounter mystical cats who work in alliance with human gods and goddesses. The feline entities come from different eras and cultures all over the world.
