Read the life of a true man among the men of early California -- Captain Granville Perry Swift, trapper, pioneer, grand-nephew of Daniel Boone, and Bear Flagger. A dauntless pioneer of the first class, of noble presence, generous and open-handed, Swift was said to be the Adonis of all the handsome men among the early settlers. From age ten on he traveled the Rocky Mountain and the Santa Fe trails with his uncle Nat Walker (a well-known trapper and trader in the early 1800's), came to California as a hunter and trapper in 1841. Successful ranching in northern Sacramento Valley placed him in the position of a leader with the group of men who stormed the Mexican garrison at Sonoma in 1846. This action is known as the Bear Flag Revolt and resulted in California becoming a United States republic. Under the command of John Fremont, he was made captain in the US Army during the Mexican War. Kit Carson was a close companion during the war. After the war he was in the right place at the right time and became rich by the early gold workings by 1848. His riches moved him definitely out of his known milieu as he moved from Colusa County to Sonoma in 1856, and began to enter high society, married, and built a mansion. Thanks to total access to all family papers and records, this book tells the story that has never been told fully until now of the life and times of Captain Granville Perry Swift -- a California Bear Flagger, a man among men, and a noble pioneer.

In this fourth book in the series, Dave Perry writes about his almost famous ancestor. Christopher Perry was a little-known hero of the American Revolution; but he left a huge legacy for the young nation.Coming of age. The transition through the stage of youth, leading from boyhood to manhood has been unnaturally extended in our age. This was not the case in the eighteenth century, especially for those young men who went to war on the sea. What does it feel like to be a young man caught up in war? What pain is wreaked on the undeveloped emotions of a youth thrust into the battles of men. If he is forced to kill, fight for his life, see his friends die, and suffer torturous imprisonment, how will he react? These experiences can destroy a young man, or they can temper him like steel in a furnace. Revolution at sea is a life that can take the boy raised to hard work, character, and integrity by his parents, and forge that person into a national leader.Such was the hero named Christopher Raymond Perry. Perry was an intrepid character during the American Revolution. As naval captain, he was a hero during the United States' Quasi War with France. He is best known as the father of two of America's greatest naval heroes.Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry is eternally renown as the hero of the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. His younger brother, Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry, is known in history as the man who visited Japan with a U. S. fleet of warships and opened the hermit country to commercial trade with western nations. This novel was painstakingly researched from historical and genealogical records. Many family remembrances, ship manifests and crew lists, period newspaper articles, personal and official letters, and other historical records are quoted and summarized in this text. Quaker Privateer is the story of young Christopher Perry's early life. Read about the Quaker pacifist who became one of America's greatest warriors.
