Charles Crichton is perhaps best remembered as the director of the unlikely blockbuster hit A Fish Called Wanda, made when he was seventy-seven years old. But the most significant part of his career was spent at Ealing Studios in the 1940s and 1950s, working on such beloved comedies as Hue and Cry, The Lavender Hill Mob and The Titfield Thunderbolt. Nonetheless, as this pioneering study of Crichton’s work reveals, his filmmaking skills extended way beyond comedy to wartime dramas and film noir, and his adaptability served him well when he made the transition into primetime television, working on popular shows such as The Avengers, Space: 1999 and The Adventures of Black Beauty. Featuring first-hand testimony from colleagues ranging from Dame Judi Dench and Petula Clark to John Cleese and Sir Michael Palin, this riveting account of Crichton’s fascinating life in film will appeal to film scholars and general readers alike.

Things You Should Knnow About Women (Written By A Man)From seventeen to seventy, male or female, gay or straight, this subject matter has relevance to us all. It could also save a few already rocky relationships and has the potential to make lawyers a few pence poorer. It could possibly be seen as a book promoting marital and partnership harmony or, at the other end of the spectrum, a guide to treating the dangerously infectious inferiority complex of a fully committed male chauvinist. The activities of our sample couple, Harry and Kylie, will possibly generate a series of 'Oh yes ... I remember that one' along with 'That's so damn like him ' interspersed with the odd laugh out loud and a few smiling tears. This is a book that comes with its own guilty smile

Financing Education

Financing Education

Quentin Quade

Lack of family structure, violence in the schools, and overcrowded classrooms spur a never-ending cry for "reforms" to confront such issues. Quentin L. Quade cuts through the alarming din to what he feels is the real heart of the matter- the ways society assigns tax dollars dedicated to education, what he refers to as educational finance monopoly or EFM.In the United States, contrary to the practice of many other modern democracies, tax dollars are assigned by state bureaucratic structures to each state's own schools. Such a system spawns structures and personnel that stay in place irrespective of merit, and keep control of all finances. An alternative to EFM, at work in various other democracies, is programs aimed to permit school choice without financial penalty. In such systems, parents determine the allocation of education-dedicated tax dollars, and can select schools most suited to their children. In contrast, under EFM state schools are sheltered from competitive incentives to excel, to make themselves choiceworthy. And independent schools are damaged because they are deprived of the resources they would have if parents were free to choose. On the one side, defenders of EFM want political control for financial advantage and to block efforts to change. On the other side, critics want parents to be free to decide the educational environment for their children. Quade maintains that EFM is fundamentally injurious to children, parents, and the nation; that it is maintained by political defenses of financial interests, not for reasons of educational merit; and that school choice without financial penalty would create better educational conditions and outcomes.Financing Education examines the major problems of American K-12 education, establishes the casual connections with EFM, offers school choice without financial penalty as a powerful and obvious cure, and examines several American school choice proposals. It will be of interest to policymakers, policy analysts, educators, taxpayers, parents, and all persons concerned about American's educational quality.
Re-Viewing James Baldwin

Re-Viewing James Baldwin

Quentin Miller

Temple University Press,U.S.
2000
pokkari
This new collection of essays presents a critical reappraisal of James Baldwin's work, looking beyond the commercial success of some of Baldwin's early writings such as Go Tell It on the Mountain and Notes of a Native Son. Focusing on Baldwin's critically undervalued early works and the virtually neglected later ones the contributors illuminate little-known aspects of this daring author's work and highlight his accomplishments as an experimental writer. Attentive to his innovations in style and form, Re-Viewing James Baldwin reveals an author who continually challenged the notion of unity as he tackled matters of social justice, sexuality, and racial identity. As volume editor D. Quentin Miller notes, \u0022what has been lost is a complete portrait of [Baldwin's] tremendously rich intellectual journey that illustrates the direction of African American thought and culture in the late twentieth century.\u0022 This is an important book for anyone interested in Baldwin's work. It will engage readers interested in literature and African American Studies.
The Realities of Classroom Testing and Grading

The Realities of Classroom Testing and Grading

Quentin Durham

Rowman Littlefield Education
2006
sidottu
It is commonly believed that highly subjective humans ultimately perform all testing and grading efforts and that all testing and grading is completely subjective. However, Quentin Durham argues that there is no such thing as "objective" testing or grading. With wit and clarity, The Realities of Classroom Testing and Grading suggests that all testing and grading efforts—from preschool to high school—are fundamentally the same. The instructor teaches what the student is supposed to learn, assesses the student's understanding, and reports the assessment to the people who count. This book discusses a wide variety of generally taboo or ignored topics such as the multiple benefits of testing and grading beyond the obvious, realities of standardized exams, open book exams, teaching exam-taking, exam subjectivity and relevance, "test wiley" students, cheating, parent conferences, grading methods that make sense, and lots more.
