A History of Bel Canto

A History of Bel Canto

Celletti Rodolfo

Clarendon Press

Bel canto singing was a historical phenomenon which embraced Italian opera of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It required infinite variety of sound, in particular a lyrical ecstacy, a faultless technique to dispatch the vocal pyrotechnics demanded of it, and earned itself eloquent praise as `the singing which is heard within the soul'. Rodolfo Celletti, who has devoted his whole career to studying the voice from every historical, technical, and musical aspect, offers here a fascinating history of bel canto singing and the voice in operatic literature. He begins by discussing the links of bel canto with the operatic ideals of the baroque, and points out that the style was created as much by operatic composers and their librettists as by their executants, the singers. To this end he undertakes a review of Italian opera of the period, andtraces the development of the style in different composers and their works. There is a chapetr on Castrati - the voice par excellence of bel canto - and the art of singing in their day. The final chapter looks at the history of bel canto since Rossini, charting its death and resurrection.

Using original research by a number of highly regarded specialists, this book brings together comparative materials and distinct disciplinary approaches on the origins and dynamics of ethnic conflicts, ethnic policies of nation states, and different attempts to contain, transform and resolve ethnic conflicts. It is one of the results of a research project on ethnic conflicts and development undertaken by the United Nations Research Institute on Social Development. Includes material on Asia and the Pacific, Africa, the Middle East, the former socialist countries, the United States, and Latin America.
Loops, Knots, Gauge Theories and Quantum Gravity

Loops, Knots, Gauge Theories and Quantum Gravity

Gambini Rodolfo; Pullin Jorge

Cambridge University Press
2000

Now in paperback, this text provides a self-contained introduction to applications of loop representations and knot theory in particle physics and quantum gravity. Loop representations (and the related topic of knot theory) are of considerable current interest because they provide a unified arena for the study of the gauge invariant quantization of Yang-Mills theories and gravity, and suggest a promising approach to the eventual unification of the four fundamental forces. This text begins with a detailed review of loop representation theory. It then goes on to describe loop representations in Maxwell theory, Yang-Mills theories as well as lattice techniques. Applications in quantum gravity are then discussed in detail. Following chapters move on to consider knot theories, braid theories and extended loop representations in quantum gravity. A final chapter assesses the current status of the theory and points out possible directions for future research.
Quad Rotorcraft Control

Quad Rotorcraft Control develops original control methods for the navigation and hovering flight of an autonomous mini-quad-rotor robotic helicopter. These methods use an imaging system and a combination of inertial and altitude sensors to localize and guide the movement of the unmanned aerial vehicle relative to its immediate environment. The history, classification and applications of UAVs are introduced, followed by a description of modelling techniques for quad-rotors and the experimental platform itself. A control strategy for the improvement of attitude stabilization in quad-rotors is then proposed and tested in real-time experiments. The strategy, based on the use low-cost components and with experimentally-established robustness, avoids drift in the UAV’s angular position by the addition of an internal control loop to each electronic speed controller ensuring that, during hovering flight, all four motors turn at almost the same speed. The quad-rotor’s Euler angles being very close to the origin, other sensors like GPS or image-sensing equipment can be incorporated to perform autonomous positioning or trajectory-tracking tasks. Two vision-based strategies, each designed to deal with a specific kind of mission, are introduced and separately tested. The first stabilizes the quad-rotor over a landing pad on the ground; it extracts the 3-dimensional position using homography estimation and derives translational velocity by optical flow calculation. The second combines colour-extraction and line-detection algorithms to control the quad-rotor’s 3-dimensional position and achieves forward velocity regulation during a road-following task. In order to estimate the translational-dynamical characteristics of the quad-rotor (relative position and translational velocity) as they evolve within a building or other unstructured, GPS-deprived environment, imaging, inertial and altitude sensors are combined in a state observer. The textgive the reader a current view of the problems encountered in UAV control, specifically those relating to quad-rotor flying machines and it will interest researchers and graduate students working in that field. The vision-based control strategies presented help the reader to a better understanding of how an imaging system can be used to obtain the information required for performance of the hovering and navigation tasks ubiquitous in rotored UAV operation.

A Lifetime of Uncertainty Throughout the United States, undocumented students live in constant fear of their legal status being disclosed and, despite their educational success and professional objectives, face uncertainty and an unknown future. Negotiating Spaces: The Lives of Undocumented Youth puts forward the question: what are the effects of the symbiotic relationship of a historical anti-Mexican sentiment and a failed U.S. immigration policy on the negotiation of spaces by college age Mexican-origin undocumented students? Negotiating Spaces research asks: what are the existing social-psychological forces that shape the daily experiences and negotiated spaces of unauthorized youth, in particular, those pursuing access to higher levels of education in the United States? The conceptual framework of the study uses two dimensions. The first consists of explicit and implicit modes of behavior. The second dimension focuses on how students navigate between regulated and unregulated spaces in their communities. The findings derived from triangulated qualitative approaches informed the study on how unauthorized youth consistently negotiate their lived spaces. Eight themes describe the explicit and implicit tensions of lived space: identity, membership, micro-aggressions, trauma, resiliency-adaptability, pragmatism, agency, family, and structural violence. Furthermore, four additional concepts describe their regulated and unregulated legal space in the form of social-psychological trauma, namely living in ambivalence, encapsulation, dissonance, and rejection. Negotiating Spaces provides recommendations for further research. Specifically, the recommendations related to the human condition of unauthorized youth attending college, and discourse over the criminalization and virtual internment of undocumented youth in the United States.
