A brilliantly observed modern morality tale, Talitha Stevenson's Exposure explores the terrible effects of deceit, obsession, and shame on a dangerously complacent family. Alistair Langford, a respected and powerful barrister, has been hiding his past since he left his hometown of Dover to study at Oxford in the late 1950s. Embarrassed by his working-class upbringing in a guesthouse run by his single mother, with whom he has not had any contact for forty years, he has lied about himself to everyone in his life since Oxford, including his wife, Rosalind, and his two children, Luke and Sophie. But after the death of his mother and a one-night stand with a devious defense witness, his tightly woven tapestry of lies begins to unravel. Exposure is a deftly plotted, psychologically suspenseful, and compulsively readable novel from one of the most exciting young fiction writers today.

It is amazing how many women have various experiences that challenges their individual circumstances from childcare to employment to just being heard during medical visits, let alone becoming an entrepreneur. We are strong, courageous, impactful, resilient women and it shows in the stories that are shared in the book. I found out that some of the stories shared had segments that I had personally experienced and it showed what skill set they used to move through it. This is a way for us to not hear what we should do and how we should do it, this is the type of book that allows you to peek into the life of different people in different industries with similar experiences on their journey and see how it can be applied in our own lives and journey. Each contributor outlined their experiences in their own words to support us on our entrepreneurial marathon. The level of courage and vulnerability shared here is a great way to help those who are encountering challenging people and situations and to understand you are not wrong, broken, or damaged. It is the opposite because you have the answer and those who are meant for you are the ones that will find you and also there is always more than one way to reach your goal. It can be difficult but you just need the right support, unshakable faith, fortitude of a champion, and the fierceness of a lioness and that is where your winning attitude will reside in you These ladies have shown me that I hope you are able to get a similar message when reading The Invisible Entrepreneur from Mental Health to Mindset because those are two things that are not up for compromise.
Rumor, Diplomacy and War in Enlightenment Paris

Rumor, Diplomacy and War in Enlightenment Paris

Tabetha Leigh Ewing

Voltaire Foundation
2014
nidottu
Paris 1744: a royal official approaches a shopkeeper’s wife, proposing that she become an informant to the Crown and report on the conversations of foreign diplomats who take meals at her house. Her reports, housed today in the Bastille archives, are little more than a collection of wartime rumors gathered from clandestine, handwritten newspapers and everyday talk around the city, yet she comes to imagine herself a political agent on behalf of Louis XV. In this book Tabetha Ewing analyses different forms of everyday talk over the course of the War of Austrian Succession to explore how they led to new understandings of political identity.Royal policing and clandestine media shaped what Parisians knew and how they conceptualized events in a period of war. Responding to subversive political verses or to an official declaration hawked on the city streets, they experienced the pleasures and dangers of talking politics and exchanging opinions on matters of state, whether in the café or the wigmaker’s shop. Tabetha Ewing argues that this ephemeral expression of opinions on war and diplomacy, and its surveillance, transcription, and circulation shaped a distinctly early-modern form of political participation. Whilst the study of sedition has received much scholarly attention, Ewing explores the unexpectedly dynamic effect of loyalty to the French monarchy, spoken in the distinct voices of the common people and urban elites. One such effect was a sense of national identity, arising from the interplay of events, both everyday and extraordinary, and their representation in different media. Rumor, diplomacy and war in Enlightenment Paris rethinks the relationship of the oral and the written, the official and the unofficial, by revealing how gossip, fantasy, and uncertainty are deeply embedded in the emergent modern, public life of French society.
Searching for Jane Crow: Black Women and Mass Incarceration in America from the Auction Block to the Cell Block
Argues that mass incarceration is slavery's legacy and exposes today's penal system where structural racism and state sanctioned violence keep Black women contained. For centuries, Black women have experienced extreme rates of arrest, conviction, and incarceration in the nation's jails and prisons. Thousands of enslaved and free African American women were held captive in private slave jails, public jails, and antebellum prisons. Today, Black women continue to overpopulate the criminal (in)justice system. While The New Jim Crow furthers our understanding of mass incarceration, it focuses on a Black male perspective. Searching for Jane Crow is the first book to trace the history of Black women and mass incarceration and powerfully maps slavery's legacies. Historian Talitha LeFlouria tells the stories of Black women and mass incarceration from behind the walls of jails, prisons, infirmaries, solitary confinement cells, and death row, showing their remarkable resilience. Drawing on three centuries of testimonies, archival documents, and contemporary interviews with formerly incarcerated women, it chronicles Black women's experiences with the US criminal (in)justice system and the factors that have defined it since its inception. The book exposes today's penal system where structural racism, systemic discrimination, and state sanctioned violence coalesce into keeping Black women contained. Trailblazing and ambitious, Dr. LeFlouria's book will transform how we think about mass incarceration.

Passionate Revolutions

Passionate Revolutions

Talitha Espiritu

Ohio University Press
2017
sidottu
In the last three decades, the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos has commanded the close scrutiny of scholars. These studies have focused on the political repression, human rights abuses, debt-driven growth model, and crony capitalism that defined Marcos' so-called Democratic Revolution in the Philippines. But the relationship between the media and the regime's public culture remains underexplored. In Passionate Revolutions, Talitha Espiritu evaluates the role of political emotions in the rise and fall of the Marcos government. Focusing on the sentimental narratives and melodramatic cultural politics of the press and the cinema from 1965 to 1986, she examines how aesthetics and messaging based on heightened feeling helped secure the dictator's control while also galvanizing the popular struggles that culminated in "people power" and government overthrow in 1986. In analyzing news articles, feature films, cultural policy documents, and propaganda films as national allegories imbued with revolutionary power, Espiritu expands the critical discussion of dictatorships in general and Marcos's in particular by placing Filipino popular media and the regime's public culture in dialogue. Espiritu's interdisciplinary approach in this illuminating case study of how melodrama and sentimentality shape political action breaks new ground in media studies, affect studies, and Southeast Asian studies.
