Boat Baby: A Memoir

Boat Baby: A Memoir

Vicky Nguyen

Simon Schuster Audio
2025
cd
In a memoir where heroism meets humor, NBC News anchor and correspondent Vicky Nguyen tells the story of her family's daring escape from communist Vietnam and her unlikely journey from refugee to reporter with laughter and fierce love.Starting in 1975, Vietnam's "boat people"--desperate families seeking freedom--fled the Communist government and violence in their country any way they could, usually by boat across the South China Sea. Vicky Nguyen and her family were among them. Attacked at sea by pirates before reaching a refugee camp in Malaysia, Vicky's family survived on rations and waited months until they were sponsored to America. But deciding to leave and start a new life in a new country is half the story...figuring out how to be American is the other. Boat Baby is Vicky's memoir of growing up in America with unconventional Vietnamese parents who didn't always know how to bridge the cultural gaps. It's a childhood filled with misadventures and misunderstandings, from almost stabbing the neighborhood racist with a butter knife to getting caught stealing Cosmo to read the answers to Do You Really Think You Know Everything About Sex? Vicky's parents approached life with the attitude, "Why not us?" In the face of prejudice, they taught her to be gritty and resilient, skills Vicky used as she combatted stereotyping throughout her career, fending off the question "Aren't you Connie Chung?" to become a leading Asian American journalist on television. She delivers a uniquely transparent account of her life, revealing how she negotiated her salary in a competitive industry, the challenges of starting a family, and the struggle to be a dutiful daughter. Funny, nostalgic, and poignant, Boat Baby is a testament to the messy glue that bonds a family. In the tradition of We Are Dreamers by Simu Liu and Dear Girls by Ali Wong, Vicky Nguyen offers an optimistic story full of heart that illuminates the promise of what America can be.

Sheila Mills’s story is a unique perspective of the Second World War. She is a clever, middle-class Norfolk girl with a yen for adventure and joins the WRNS in 1940 to escape the shackles of secretarial work in London, her unhappy childhood and her social-climbing mother. From a first posting in Scotland in 1940, she progresses through the ranks, first to Egypt and later to a vanquished Germany.Extraordinary and fascinating encounters and personalities are seen through the eyes of a young Wren officer: Admiral Ramsay, the Invasion of Sicily and Operation Mincemeat that triggered it, The Flap, the sinking of the Medway, the surrender of the Italian fleet and the Belsen Trials. These observations are peppered with humorous insights into the humdrum preoccupations of a typical Wren – boys, appearance and having fun, while worrying about home and family. This treasure trove of hundreds of letters, along with scrapbooks and memorabilia, some of which are reproduced here, was discovered in bin liners shortly after Sheila died. Her daughter, Vicky, has pieced together a fascinating and unusual record of the Second World War from a woman’s perspective.

I wrote my first book when I was in middle school-when I was maybe nine or ten years old. It was a mini-masterpiece, that book, in my memory. It had chapters. Pictures. A story. It even had covers and a binding, of sorts.I discovered, before I ever heard of the wonderful Sir Terry Pratchett, that writing is the most fun you can have by yourself.I have no idea what happened to that book, but I do know this: it kicked off a lifelong love affair with writing. So obviously I didn't write another book for more than twenty-five years.I spent a lot of time thinking about writing a book, and talking about writing a book, and not writing a book...Until, one day, I stood in front of a roomful of other business owners and boldly declared, "I will write a book all about my business and how I can help my customers. And not only that, I will write it in ninety days Hiiiiiiii-ya "(Imagine me performing an overenthusiastic karate chop, and beaming like an elephant with a hosepipe.)Funny thing about saying stuff in front of people you respect and admire-you kind of have to deliver on it or risk looking a total twit. So, three months later, I turned up clutching my shiny new book in my sweaty little hands-which is when the real work began.Because, my fine feathered friend, we're not in the business of writing books for the sake of it.I don't teach business owners to write books only to help you get your name in print (although it is pretty gorram amazing when your books arrive). And I'm not doing it only to help you "get published", either. Nope; I help business owners write books because I know if you write your book, and use it to its fullest potential, it could change your world.Words change worlds. Books change lives.I want to help change your life for the better when you write your book, and I want to help you change your clients' lives for the better, too.Great deeds begin with one word and one step. And great books start with one word and one sentence.Changing the world doesn't always mean the act of stopping a war (or starting one). It doesn't mean solving world poverty right now. It doesn't mean changing an unjust law overnight. All those things do transform the world, for sure-but they start with one tiny beetle step. Maybe with a book something like the one hibernating inside your head.Maybe by changing one person's life in a small way, you can set off a chain of events that'll change the world in a bigger way. What do you think? Worth a try?I reckon so.Start here. Start today. I've got your back, grasshopper.

Bede's Historiae

Bede's Historiae

A reappraisal of Bede's writings, focusing on his use of genre and rhetoric. The church history of the Anglo-Saxons can only be approached through the lens of a few writers, arguably the greatest of whom is Bede; his works illuminate an otherwise impoverished landscape of ecclesial development from conversion to established Christian church amongst the Anglo-Saxons. Bede, however, had his own agendas - monastic, political, and rhetorical. In her reappraisal of Bede's Ecclesiastical History, Lives of the Saints, History of the Abbots, the Lesser and Greater Chronicles and the Martyrology and the audience for these texts, the author draws out the role played by classical forms of genre and rhetoric in the crafting of his work.Shealso explores the underlying political influences that caused Bede to write historia as he did. In particular, she notes the role of historia in monastic affairs, especially through the generation of a rhetoric of orthodoxy and the power of the cultural capital afforded by this within the relatively newly constituted Christian community in Northumbria. Dr VICKY GUNN is Senior Lecturer, Learning and Teaching Centre, University of Glasgow.

Set in London, The Highs and Lows of Temping is a true life account of a Spanish Language Graduate who leaves her dead end job as an Administrator for Social Services and resorts to the world of temping as a means to try and find her ideal job. Temping takes on a rollercoaster of events: working with an evil Irish woman at a West London Solicitor's Practice; a bankrupt lighting company run by the Boss from hell; a role as a Film Extra for Charlie and The Chocolate Factory; a Secretary at a Middle Eastern Embassy; and a PA to an exceptionally wonderful Boss at a charitable organization; are just a few of the real life situations which she encounters. If you have ever temped or are daringly considering to do so, this book is an essential read; it's funny in that it ridicules the poor attitude and behaviour that temps so often receive from recruitment agencies and companies.

Game playing is a highly effective way of engaging children and has long been acknowledged as an important means of psychological therapy. This book offers an abundance of fun games that help children to confront personal problems and issues in a light-hearted yet meaningful way. These are games with a difference, as they must be constructed before they can be played. The creation aspect involves collaboration and cooperation within a team, and instils an empowering sense of ownership in the creators. By the time the game is ready to be played, children are confident, thoroughly engaged and ready to explore issues in a supportive environment. Each game has been tried and tested by the author, and is proven to really work. This book is an essential tool for therapists, counsellors, social workers, youth workers and teachers supporting children and young people.

We have an abysmal record on gender parity. Rwanda and Laos have more women in Parliament than Britain does. Businesses still are mostly run by men (though men created the financial disaster we are still trying to sort out). The USA has quotas for women in top jobs, so too do the Scandinavian nations. Britons hate the idea of positive discrimination - though that is what men have enjoyed for centuries. It's time to get tough, argues top economist Vicky Pryce. Provocations is a groundbreaking new series of short polemics composed by some of the most intriguing voices in contemporary culture. Never less than sharp, intelligent and controversial Provocations is a major new contribution to some of the most vital discussions in society today.
