Focusing on the historical and contemporary narration of the Partition of India, Violent Belongings examines transnational South Asian culture from 1947 onwards. Spanning the Indian subcontinent and its diasporas in the United Kingdom and the United States, it asks how postcolonial/diasporic literature (eg., Rushdie, Mistry, Sidwa and Lahiri), Bollywood film, personal testimonies and journalism represent the violence, migration and questions of national belonging unleashed by that pivotal event during which two million people died and sixteen million were displaced. In addition to challenging the official narratives of independence and Partition, these narratives challenge our contemporary understanding of gender and ethnicity in history and politics. Violent Belongings argues that both male and female bodies, and heterosexual coupledom, became symbols of the nation in public life. In the newly independent Indian nation both men and women were transformed into ideal citizens or troubling bodies, immigrants or refugees, depending on whether they were ethnically Hindu, Muslim, Jewish or Sikh. The divisions set in motion during Partition continue into our own time and account for ethnic violence in South Asia.

This book provides insightful recommendations for the Department of Defense against perpetrators of "targeted violence" -- those individuals who conduct pre-meditated attacks against specific individuals, populations, or facilities. While this book focuses on predicting violent behaviour, it also discusses the most effective means of responding to the challenge of targeted violence and prevention measures, with a focus on targeted violence affecting institutions of higher education and identifying the markers and warning signs of domestic lone wolf terrorists in our midst.

Violent Borders

Forty thousand people died trying to cross international borders in the past decade, with the high-profile deaths along the shores of Europe only accounting for half of the grisly total.Reece Jones argues that these deaths are not exceptional, but rather the result of state attempts to contain populations and control access to resources and opportunities. "We may live in an era of globalization," he writes, "but much of the world is increasingly focused on limiting the free movement of people."In Violent Borders, Jones crosses the migrant trails of the world, documenting the billions of dollars spent on border security projects and their dire consequences for countless millions. While the poor are restricted by the lottery of birth to slum dwellings in the aftershocks of decolonization, the wealthy travel without constraint, exploiting pools of cheap labor and lax environmental regulations. With the growth of borders and resource enclosures, the deaths of migrants in search of a better life are intimately connected to climate change, environmental degradation, and the growth of global wealth inequality.

Violent Becomings conceptualizes the Mozambican state not as the bureaucratically ordered polity of the nation-state, but as a continuously emergent and violently challenged mode of ordering. In doing so, this book addresses the question of why colonial and postcolonial state formation has involved violent articulations with so-called ‘traditional’ forms of sociality. The scope and dynamic nature of such violent becomings is explored through an array of contexts that include colonial regimes of forced labor and pacification, liberation war struggles and civil war, the social engineering of the post-independence state, and the popular appropriation of sovereign violence in riots and lynchings.

Victory, speedy and complete, awaits the side that employs air power as it should be employed-Marshal Sir Arthur Harris, Bomber CommandWar in the air, like any other domain, is subject to the whims of Fate. Throughout history, humans have always asked "What if?" Violent Blue Yonder explores what happens when that question gets asked hundreds (or thousands) of feet above sea level. Do you like the age of "canvas falcons?" Come along as Sarah Hoyt, the 2018 Dragon Award Winner for Alternate History, surmises what could have happened had The Red Baron survived World War I. Or alternatively (pun intended), let Rob Howell ("In Dark'ning Storms") and Joelle Presby ("Friends In High Places") lay out opposite sides of early American intervention in airpower's first conflict. More a fan of closed canopies and superchargers than flimsy, flammable death traps? See how the German Luftwaffe gains the upper hand in a Second Battle of Britain in "Londonfall." Or see different events in the Pacific as William Alan Webb cuts in with "Sword of the Sun," a tale set in his A World Afire universe. Finally, if worlds afire are your thing, we have 2010 Sidewise Award Winner Eric Swedin having the Cold War go brilliantly hot in "Foolish Games." Prefer your Cold War to have less thermonuclear annihilation? See what happens when former Flying Tigers and Tuskegee Airmen team up in Justin Watson's "Red Tailed Tigers." Bottom line: Whether you like your aviation fiction to "make kills" or "make history," there's something for you in Violent Blue Yonder. As the first of three Arc of Ares anthologies, this book sets the alternate history tone in a way that would amuse the Greek war god himself. So grab a helmet and map case, as these twelve tales are about to take you on sorties you won't forget Editor's Note: Also includes an excerpt from James Young's Acts of War, the first book in the Usurper's War: An Alternate World War II-series.

The Violent Bear It Away

Flannery O'Connor

Farrar, Straus and Giroux

A brilliant, innovative novel, acutely alert to where the sacred lives--and where it does not First published in 1960, The Violent Bear It Away is a landmark in American literature--a dark and absorbing example of the Gothic sensibility and bracing satirical voice that are united in Flannery O'Connor's work. In this, O'Connor's second novel, the orphaned Francis Marion Tarwater and his cousin, the schoolteacher Rayber, defy the prophecy of their dead uncle that Tarwater will become a prophet and baptize Rayber's young son, Bishop. A series of struggles ensues, as Tarwater fights an internal battle against his innate faith and the voices calling him to be a prophet while Rayber tries to draw Tarwater into a more "reasonable" modern world. Both wrestle with the legacy of their dead relative and lay claim to Bishop's soul. All this is observed by O'Connor with an astonishing combination of irony and compassion, humor and pathos.
The Violent Bear It Away
Flannery O'Connor's second and final novel, a dark and absorbing southern Gothic conflict between the sacred and the profane. The Violent Bear It Away was described on its publication as 'one of the most original and strange books of its decade' by the Spectator. It displays her astonishing gifts for satire with compassion and for pathos with humour. It tells the story of Francis Marion Tarwater, an orphan who lives 'backcountry' with his great uncle in Powderhead, Tennessee. Before the old man dies, he prophesies Tarwater's fate: 'the Lord will call him to be a prophet'.As in her other work, Flannery O'Connor unfolds a compelling tale of obsession and religious conflict in the Deep South.
