To what extent is a great comic writer the product of his time? How far is he (or she) influenced by factors of personal psychology upbringing and environment? To what is the writing actually part of a long continuum in which there is continuity within change and change within continuity? The Progress of Fun considers principally the last of these areas, focussing on the case of W.S. Gilbert and challenging the frequently held view that he is pre-eminently a typical Victorian. This it does by tracing his roots back to Ancient Greek comedy and to the various comedic developments that have dominated Western Europe thereafter. Also included is a careful examination of the constraints and limitations that in various forms have long affected comedy-writing, and an evaluation of Gilbert’s particular skills and legacy within the on-going process. The whole is a suitable prelude to a second volume (Pipes and Tabors) which will consider Genre in W.S. Gilbert, again relating it to comedic precedents and the universally timeless within the particular.

Underpinned by rigorous close readings of his oeuvre, this book provides a comprehensive guide to the development, practice and evolution of Wilfred Bion’s clinical psychoanalytic work. Starting with the significance of Kant during Bion’s years as a student, the author traces the key influences on Bion in his psychoanalytic and personal development, progressing through Bion’s particularly productive pre-psychoanalytic work based on social field theory, his well-known elaboration of Klein’s schizoid mechanisms known as the theory of containment, all the while with his deeply thoughtful clinical approach inspired latterly by an understanding of literary creativity. Extending this unique emphasis on Bion’s clinical work, rather than his theory, Hinshelwood also explores how Bion’s early traumatic experiences helped shape his attitudes and approach to effective clinical work. With comprehensive coverage of the key tenets of Bion’s work, this should be essential reading for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists in practice and in training who seek a clear guide to the practical applications of his theory.

W.G. Sebald's Artistic Legacies
When the mind turns more than one would wish towards questions of – as W.G. Sebald puts it – the “natural history of destruction”, comparative consideration by artists and interdisciplinary scholars is directed to the interstices between images, novel, essay, (auto)biography, memorial and travelogue. Artists have been among Sebald’s most prolific interpreters – as they are among the more fearless and holistic researchers on questions concerning what it means never to be able to fix an identity, to tell a migrant’s story, or to know where a historical trauma ends. Sebald has – as this book attests – also given artists and scholars a means to write with images, to embrace ambiguity, and to turn to today’s migrants with empathy and responsibility; as well as to let academic research, creation and institutional engagement blend into or substantially inform one another in order to account for and enable such necessary work in the most diverse contexts.

W.I.S.E World Interplanetary Space Exploration
This story entails the discovery of a rouge planet that has a twist of fate for the discoverers who have landed on the surface of a Frozen World. ✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶Renee "Although lack of communication from the ground teams wasn't uncommon, I had a bad feeling about this mission. I probably wouldn't have felt so bad if the planet hadn't brought the type of questions that this one did. After seeing the images from the last two radar passes, my intuition told me something was happening"✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶Mike"You worry too much. We're going down with a smaller and lighter ship than the ones there now. Besides, our equipment's much more advanced than that of the past. There is nothing down there that can hurt us. After all, this is a dead, frozen world,"✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶SamI looked at the wall where her flashlight beam was shining. There were dents, scratches, and black cone-shaped burn marks all over the wall. I recognized it immediately; as weapons fire, it made those marks. My expression changed to a blank stare, trying to decipher what could have happened and why the marks were on the wall. ✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶✶Pops"No, even with these goggles, I can't completely determine what is approaching. All I can say for sure is something is getting closer to us. Considering that we thought this planet was uninhabited, I would rather be cautious than dead,"
