Ten year old Alex had no idea of what his mom meant when she mentioned a 'black hole' that was supposedly under his bed. All he knew was when he found his Swiss Army knife, which he knew had to be somewhere under his bed, he would sneak out his bedroom window and head for his fort to meet up with his buddies. He knew his mom would be mad and he would again lie about cleaning up his bedroom that resembled a war zone. Alex had learned over the years how to 'sweet talk' his mother, which led to Alex's diminished time spent in 'jail'. He knew it wasn't right to not help his mother as he should; after all, with his father in Heaven, Alex was the only 'man' in the household. But he didn't behave like a man or a young boy that his father would have been proud of. And so he continued with his unbecoming behavior, clueless of what lay before him. Alex's unexpected journey from under his bed into a strange and often terrifying land helped him to develop from a distrustful and unruly little boy to a faithful, trusting and reliable young man My name is Karen Kay ( Ketcheson) Sharp and I am originally from Lansing, Michigan. I have always had a desire to write. After graduating high school, I went to college to become a Registered Nurse and worked adult critical care and pediatric emergency care for over forty years, which, along with the six children that I had, didn't leave me much time to devote to serious writing. What makes this story precious to me is that it's been on the back burner for the last twenty five years and I finally completed it, February 28th, 2020

Alex Russell is regarded as perhaps Australia's finest ever home-grown golf course architect. He served as the Australian partner of the famed Scottish architect Dr Alister MacKenzie in the design and construction of the West Course at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, and was solely responsible for the design of Yarra Yarra, Royal Melbourne's East Course, Lake Karrinyup in Perth and Paraparaumu Beach in New Zealand, all highly rated courses. However, he is important to the story of Australian golf for much more than just golf course design as he was a champion golfer, winning the 1924 Australian Open as an amateur, amongst numerous other national and state titles.Discovering Alex Russell: The Man and his Legacy by Neil Crafter and John Green uses detailed text, period archival photographs, maps and plans to bring together the many threads of Russell's life from his birth as the son of a wealthy Victorian grazier, to his education at Geelong Grammar and Cambridge, and his distinguished service as an artillery officer in the British Army in World War I, finishing the war as a Major in charge of his own battery after recovering from significant injuries caused by an incoming German shell. The book examines Russell's political life and his subsequent service in World War II where he was in charge of repatriating prisoners of war for the Australian Red Cross, together with his family life and the grazing property 'Mawallok' in Victoria's Western District. Discovering Alex Russell is a handsomely illustrated and detailed biography of a man who did so much for golf in Australia. It is a fascinating way to discover more about Alex Russell the man, his life and his golf courses.
Meet Alex and Bobbie, who both like to play poker. Alex is a professional poker player who plays for a living and is a solid long-term winner. Bobbie is a recreational player who plays a decent enough game but mainly wants to have a good time. If you play poker regularly you will meet thousands of players like Bobbie in your games and very few like Alex. Of course one would expect that, in the long run, Alex will perform better than Bobbie. But have you ever wondered EXACTLY what it is that Alex understands better and does differently to Bobbie? This is a rather complex question that does not have a simple answer. In this book, UCLA maths professor Duncan Palamourdas addresses this question via a journey through human psychology, game theory, easy-to-understand mathematics and even philosophy. Topics include: Understanding the instinctive but unprofitable tendencies of inexperienced players. How to identify what a mistake actually is in poker - and how to exploit it. Why poker does not revolve around bluffing. The great impact of variance in poker and how to account for it. How to develop a consistent approach that allows you to play like Alex and not Bobbie. Duncan Palamourdas specializes in the mathematics of poker and poker education. His poker classes at UCLA always fill up early and have long waiting lists. He is also an author at Upswing Poker, Poker News, Card Player and Winning Network. Despite his impressive academic credentials, Duncan's popularity is a product of his love for simple language and metaphors. Profitable poker play essentially revolves around correct risk-reward optimization. This is a complex topic and Duncan's great strength is that he explains it in simple terms without resorting to technical jargon.
