Enter the strange and exciting world of promiscuous gay men, drag queens, tweakers, ravers, and all-night party animals as seen through the eyes of a shy, lonely, heterosexual man looking for love in all the wrong places. Once a recluse, 30-year-old Benjamin Oldman spends his nights and weekends carousing with fellow construction workers, looking for the perfect bar, which ultimately leads him to Club Heaven-the most popular gay nightclub in Oklahoma City. Though he prefers women, Benjamin instantly takes a shine to the place with its dark, brooding atmosphere and heart-pounding music. Plus, he meets plenty of eccentrics and misfits such as himself, including three women who turn his world upside down. Porsche, a transgender who lives as a black woman, takes Benjamin under her wing and becomes his strongest ally and mentor. Then there's Laura, a self-proclaimed "crazy bitch", who brings out Benjamin's wild side...and Barbie, a free-spirited woman in her twenties who Benjamin falls in love with despite an age gap and her ever-increasing dependence on heroin. Benjamin never thought he'd have to compete against an illegal substance-or that his "coming out" might lead to his undoing.

Hoxton today is one of the most fashionable parts of inner London, yet before the Blitz, it was the capital's most notorious slum area. It was London's busiest market for stolen goods, the centre of the pickpocket trade, home to a razor gang that terrorised racecourses all over southern England.

Karl Popper is not, as yet anyway, a household name among the educated, and this fact requires explanation. In this book, Bryan Magee gives a bold, clear outline of Popper's thought which exhibits its systematic unity.

In the last decade Ireland’s immigrant population grew to more than one in ten. Now in the midst of an economic crisis the integration of immigrants has become a topical issue. Drawing extensively on demographic data and research on immigrant lives, immigrant participation in Irish politics and the experiences of immigrants living in deprived communities, this book offers a thorough study of the immigrant experience in Ireland today. Well-researched chapters and case studies examine the effects of immigration on social cohesion, the role of social policy, the nature and extent of segregation in education, racism and discrimination in the labour market, and the barriers faced by immigrants seeking Irish citizenship. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of immigration in Ireland and will appeal more broadly to those studying politics, sociology, geography and social policy.

Now in its second edition, Racism and Social Change in the Republic of Ireland provides an original and challenging account of racism in twenty-first century Irish society and locates this in its historical, political, sociological and policy contexts. It includes specific case studies of the experiences of racism in twenty-first century Ireland alongside a number of historical case studies that examine how modern Ireland came to marginalize ethnic minorities. Various chapters examine responses by the Irish state to Jewish refugees before, during and after the Holocaust, asylum seekers and Travellers. Other chapters examine policy responses to and academic debates on racism in Ireland. A key focus of the various case studies is upon the mechanics of exclusion experienced by black and ethnic minorities within institutional processes and of the linked challenge of taking racism seriously in twenty-first century Ireland.

The Arguments of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason
The importance of Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason in the history of philosophy is matched only by its difficulty. In particular, readers are often frustrated by how difficult it is to extract Kant's arguments from his dense prose. This book reconstructs, using the tools of propositional logic, the central arguments of the Critique. In all, the book reconstructs thirty-six of Kant's arguments spanning the Transcendental Aesthetic, Transcendental Analytic, and Transcendental Dialectic. For each argument, they begin with a quote from Kant's text followed by a synopsis that explains the argument informally. Finally, each synopsis is followed by a formal reconstruction of the argument. The synopses offer examples, metaphors, historical background, and objections/responses to aid the reader in appreciating Kant's arguments. Even though many readers who approach Kant for the first time have a good philosophical vocabulary, few will understand Kant's unique lexicon. In addition to formally reconstructing Kant's arguments, the book also includes a glossary that defines the technical terms that Kant uses in his arguments. Finally, since this book is directed largely at students, Bryan Hall enlisted two of his own students to ensure that the book is maximally student friendly. In contrast to most pedagogical philosophical literature, the content of this book has been tailored by students for students.

Written by the holder of several Guinness World Records for cardstacking, this is the first complete, fully illustrated guide to the art of building mind-boggling, multilevel structures with ordinary playing cards. In Stacking the Deck, Bryan Berg reveals the secret to successful cardstacking with his simple four-card-cell structure and expanded grid techniques. Using illustrations and step-by-step instructions, he guides readers on to more elaborate -- and incredibly strong -- creations. He covers a wide range of architectural styles, from classic to whimsical, and various types of structures, including pyramids, shrines, stadiums, churches, an oil derrick, and even the Empire State Building. Since first setting the height record in 1992, Bryan's built awe-inspiring card models of a Japanese shrine, the Iowa State Capitol building, Ebbets Field, and his latest tower, which is more than twenty-five feet tall! This book includes photographs of some of these amazing pieces, illustrating just how appealing and enduring a "house of cards" can be. Stacking the Deck will inspire everyone from youngsters experimenting with their first deck of cards to adults, who can create their own private skyscrapers. Once you've read Stacking the Deck, you'll never look at a deck of cards the same way again.
