Heroic, ambitious, opinionated and independent to the point of insubordination, Sir Charles James Napier (1782–1853) was an inspiring leader. Published in 1857 in four volumes, this is the story of Napier's remarkable, action-packed and often controversial life and military career, as told by his brother William. The biography places Napier's life in historical context, and contains portraits, extracts from his letters and entertaining anecdotes. William's admiration for his brother is evident throughout, and he describes how his brother's fiery character divided opinion. A close friend of Lord Byron, Napier also had a great admirer in Thomas Carlyle, who described him as 'more of a hero than any modern I have seen for a long time'. Volume 1 describes Napier's upbringing in Ireland - where, according to his brother, he was 'sickly as a child from the misconduct of a barbarous nurse' - and his early years abroad in combat.

Born to a Scottish father and an Indian mother, the military adventurer James Skinner (1778–1841) acquired wealth and fame in India for raising and leading regiments of irregular cavalry, aiding the British in their wars against the Marathas and Pindaris. Distinguished in battle and generous as a host and patron, Skinner was also fluent in Persian and highly regarded by his men and his superiors. Based on first-hand acquaintance and Skinner's own journal, this two-volume work, published in 1851 by the Scottish traveller and artist James Baillie Fraser (1783–1856), who aimed to represent Skinner 'such as he was in truth, a gallant soldier, a zealous officer, a steady friend, a worthy noble-minded man; and spite of his dark complexion, a true and loyal Briton'. Volume 1 sketches the historical background to Skinner's exploits, and includes his account of his activities up to 1804 and the Second Anglo-Maratha War.

Life and Correspondence of Sir Bartle Frere, Bart., G.C.B., F.R.S., etc.
Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere (1815–84) was recognised as one of the ablest colonial administrators of his generation. His service in British India, where he rose to serve on the Supreme Council, was distinguished by his promotion of municipal institutions and his inclusion of the Indian people. In this respect he was ahead of his time. At the outbreak of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, his actions helped limit the spread of the uprising. As Governor of the Cape Colony in South Africa he was directed to confederate the disparate territories there into a single nation, but this mission was marred by his unilateral decision to wage war on the Zulus. In 1894, John Martineau (1834–1910) published this sympathetic two-volume biography. Volume 1 covers Frere's ascent in India from a lowly civil servant to one of its most influential rulers.
