In teeming Victorian London, where lavish wealth and appalling poverty live side by side, Edward Pierce charms the most prominent of the well-to-do as he cunningly orchestrates the crime of the century. Who would suspect that a gentleman of breeding could mastermind the daring theft of a fortune in gold? Who could predict the consequences of making the extraordinary robbery aboard the pride of England's industrial era, the mighty steam locomotive? Based on fact, as lively as legend, and studded with all the suspense and style of a modern fiction master, here is a classic caper novel set a decade before the age of dynamite yet nonetheless explosive. Michael Crichton wrote and directed the screen adaptation of "The Great Train Robbery," starring Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland."

The year is A.D. 922. A refined Arab courtier, representative of the powerful Caliph of Baghdad, encounters a party of Viking warriors who are journeying to the barbaric North. He is appalled by their Viking customs the wanton sexuality of their pale, angular women, their disregard for cleanliness their cold-blooded human sacrifices. But it is not until they reach the depths of the Northland that the courtier learns the horrifying and inescapable truth: he has been enlisted by these savage, inscrutable warriors to help combat a terror that plagues them a monstrosity that emerges under cover of night to slaughter the Vikings and devour their flesh. "Eaters of the Dead" was adapted to the screen as "The 13th Warrior," starring Antonio Banderas."

Peter Crichton seized the outbreak of the Second World War to escape his journalistic job in London. Ever adventurous and somewhat impetuous he quickly transferred regiments to the 4th Queen's Own Hussars who were destined for North Africa. In no time he found himself fighting a desperate and ill-fated rear-guard action in the mountains of Northern Greece. One of only 180, out of 600, of his Regiment to be evacuated, he was soon involved in the brutal battles of Alam Halfa and El Alamein. While the 4th Hussars recovered and re-trained, the Author found time to play polo and fall in love. By a twist of fate, he was ordered to deploy to Yugoslavia where he was attached to Tito's partisans as they fought their way North, island by island, hurrying the Germans' withdrawal. After four and a half years' absence, he reached London on VE Day, 1945, surprised but grateful to be alive, unlike so many of his contemporaries. Although he wrote up his experiences with admirable clarity and modesty, his papers remained unpublished until Robert, his son, decided to bring them to a wider audience. The result is an action-packed and graphic memoir of unusual breadth.

Is a loved one missing some body parts? Are blondes becoming extinct? Is everyone at your dinner table of the same species? Humans and chimpanzees differ in only 400 genes; is that why an adult human being resembles a chimp fetus? And should that worry us? There's a new genetic cure for drug addiction--is it worse than the disease? We live in a time of momentous scientific leaps; a time when it's possible to sell our eggs and sperm online for thousands of dollars or test our spouses for genetic maladies. We live in a time when one fifth of all our genes are owned by someone else, and an unsuspecting person and his family can be pursued cross-country because they happen to have certain valuable genes within their chromosomes . . . Devilishly clever, Next blends fact and fiction into a breathless tale of a new world where nothing is what it seems, and a set of new possibilities can open at every turn. Next challenges our sense of reality and notions of morality. Balancing the comic and bizarre with the genuinely frightening and disturbing, Next shatters our assumptions, and reveals shocking new choices where we least expect. The future is closer than you think. Initially in this book, I wanted to explore two things: the connection between Herman Melville and the artist Joseph Mallord William Turner; then Herman Melville's sub-text in the novel. The art trail led me to Frank Stella, who on his own aesthetic path, had discovered how Moby-Dick would expand his art. On the second point, it seems that Moby-Dick makes special demands on the reader to be open to hints and able to work through details to a satisfying conclusion. This process with Melville's help will sort through details to a final conclusion in the best rational sense. It became clear that Melville sometimes mixed his voice with the narrative voice of Ishmael. This led to the possibility that Ishmael's friendship with Queequeg allowed Melville to link his experience on South Sea islands to Queequeg's own. It opened up all the evidence of Melville's ethnology, both in Moby-Dick and in his other works. My study relied on the state-of-the-art in the sciences of biology, geology, geography, spherical geometry and circumnavigation. Some of the most pressing social concerns of colonial expansionism and slavery in the United States are also coming to a boil both on land and on the Pequod.
