Several physiological mechanisms act to regulate renal potassium excretion and distribution. Together they comprise an integrated control system that may be envisioned as being made up of several interacting negative feedback control mechanisms, all affecting removal of potassium from the extracellular fluid by renal excretion or transfer across cell membranes into or out of the intracellular compartment. The intent of this presentation is to describe the mechanisms of potassium regulation, beginning in Chapter 1 with an overview of the system, Chapter 2 with mechanisms that determine movement of potassium between the extracellular and intracellular compartments, in Chapter 3 focusing on renal tubular transport systems, and in Chapter 4 presenting the mechanisms of control of aldosterone secretion. Greatest emphasis will be on describing the integrated functions of the components, in Chapter 5, as they operate together in a system to regulate extracellular potassium concentration in response to commonly encountered challenges. In addition, interactions between potassium regulation and commonly used medications will be considered in Chapter 6, and in Chapter 7 the causes and treatment of dysregulation of potassium will be discussed.

The purpose of this text is to introduce engineering and science students to the basic underlying physics and chemistry concepts that form the foundation of plasma science and engineering. It is an accessible primer directed primarily at those students who, like the general public, simply do not understand exactly what a plasma or gas discharge is nor do they even necessarily have the fundamental background in statistical thermodynamics, gas dynamics, fluid dynamics, or solid state physics to effectively understand many plasma and gas discharge principles.At the conclusion of this text, the reader should understand what an ion is, how they move, the equations we use to describe these basic concepts, and how they link to the aforementioned topics of plasmas and gas discharges. This book is focused on specific concepts that are important to non-equilibrium, low temperature gas discharges. These discharges find wide applicability today and are of significant interest to the scientific and engineering communities.
Australian journalist Steve Kennedy travels to London for a vacation after losing his job. The Ecology of Me is a narrative project focusing on my notion of 'aesthetic functioning' as it relates to identity, culture and environmental issues and the possible intersection of these factors. Its structure takes the form of an autobiographical narrative closely linked to ecological identity and its development in educators over time. Using personal examples from my own life, I critically examine a number of poems or narrative texts written over the span of my educational development and ensuing academic career. Centered on these texts, I also adopt critical literary analytical techniques to describe the context and backdrop for each of these forms of writing. The volume consists of a series of poems coupled with photographic compositions and related narrative texts that further describe the cultural and political context for each work as well as my personal circumstances during the time of writing. Together, these form a working 'environmental autobiography' of sorts while also modeling the process of developing and maintaining one's own 'aesthetic functioning' in an increasing complex and technological world.
