Highly Commended, BMA Medical Book Awards 2015An Introduction to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery encompasses the full range of oral and maxillofacial surgery. It also addresses the necessary core competencies for undergraduates and those pursuing basic specialist training. The second edition now includes international perspectives. In the UK, oral and maxillofacial surgery is a unique discipline—the ninth of ten currently recognized surgical specialties—and trainees usually start from a dental qualification before gaining a medical one. In contrast, in Germany practitioners often start from a medical base and then obtain a dental degree while in North America they start from a dental base and may or may not become dually qualified. The book’s initial chapters cater to all approaches of initial training and crucially bring them together in the specialist surgical sections. In chapters where the UK, US, and German perspectives are distinctly different, a section at the end has been added offering a specific perspective. However, where there is general consensus the international views have been integrated into the main body of text. At the end of each chapter, where appropriate, readers will find relevant references and recommendations for further reading. This book can also be considered a definitive and consistently reliable source of information for those following the UK’s Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum.

Applied Sport Management Skills, Third Edition With Web Study Guide, takes a unique and effective approach to teaching students how to become strong leaders and managers in the world of sport. Organized around the central management functions—planning, organizing, leading, and controlling—this third edition addresses the Common Professional Component topics outlined by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA). The text explains important concepts but then takes the student beyond theories, to applying those management principles and developing management skills. This practical how-to approach, accompanied by unmatched learning tools, helps students put concepts into action as sport managers—developing the skills of creative problem solving and strategic planning, and developing the ability to lead, organize, and delegate.Applied Sport Management Skills, Third Edition, has been heavily revised and touts a full-color format with 1,300 new references. Content updates keep pace with industry trends, including deeper discussions of legal liability, risk management and equipment management, servant leadership, sport culture, and social media. Particularly valuable are the special elements and practical applications that offer students real opportunities to develop their skills: Features such as Reviewing Their Game Plan and Sport Management Professionals @ Work (new to this edition) provide a cohesive thread to keep students focused on how sport managers use the concepts on the job.Applying the Concept and Time-Out sidebars offer opportunities for critical thinking by having the student think about how specific concepts relate to a sport situation or to the student’s actual experiences in sports, including part-time jobs, full-time jobs, internships, and volunteer work.Self-Assessment exercises offer insight into students’ strengths and weaknesses and how to address shortcomings. An enhanced web study guide is integrated with the text to facilitate a more interactive setting with which to complete many of the learning activities. Several of the exercises require students to visit a sport organization and answer questions to gain a better understanding of sport management. Skill-Builder Exercises present a variety of scenarios and provide step-by-step guidance on handling day-to-day situations such as setting priorities, conducting job interviews, handling conflict, and coaching employees to better performance.Sports and Social Media Exercises offer Internet-based activities that expose students to the role of social media in managing a sport organization. Rethinking the Atonement – New Perspectives on Jesus`s Death, Resurrection, and Ascension
Traditional views of the atonement tend to be reductive, focusing solely on Jesus's death on the cross. In his 2011 groundbreaking book Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in the Epistle to the Hebrews, David Moffitt challenged that paradigm, showing how the atonement is a fuller process. It involves not only Jesus's death but also his resurrection, ascension, offering, and exaltation. In the succeeding years, Moffitt has continued to expand and clarify his thinking on this issue. This book offers a more fulsome articulation of his work on the atonement that reflects his recent thinking on the topic. Moffitt continues to challenge reductive views of the atonement, primarily from the book of Hebrews, but he engages other New Testament passages as well. He offers fresh insights on sacrifice and atonement, the importance of resurrection and ascension, Jesus's role as priest, and a new perspective on Hebrews. This important book brings Moffitt's award-winning and influential scholarship to a broader audience. The book includes a foreword by N. T. Wright.
The Paleoarchaic Occupation of the Old River Bed Delta

The Paleoarchaic Occupation of the Old River Bed Delta

About 12,000 years ago, a major river ran from the Sevier Basin to the Great Salt Lake, feeding a wetland delta system and creating riparian habitat along its length. But after three thousand years the river dried up and the surrounding lands became more like what we see today. Because the Old River Bed Delta experienced less environmental and human disturbance than other areas, many of the Paleoarchaic sites found there have remained relatively intact—a rare find in the Great Basin. This book presents a comprehensive synthesis of a decade of investigations conducted by research teams working in different parts of the delta and explores questions about how the old riverbed was formed, how its distributary system changed through time, and how these changes affected early foragers. It concludes with an integrated summary and interpretation. Additional material from this study will be available online at UofUpress.com.

The Mountaineer Site presents over a decade’s worth of archaeological research conducted at Mountaineer, a Paleoindian campsite in Colorado’s Upper Gunnison Basin. Mountaineer is one of the very few extensively excavated, long-term Folsom occupations with evidence of built structures. The site provides a rich record of stone tool manufacture and use, as well as architectural features, and offers insight into Folsom period adaptive strategies from a time when the region was still in the grip of a waning Ice Age. Contributors examine data concerning the structures, the duration and repetition of occupations, and the nature of the site’s artifact assemblages to offer a valuable new perspective on human activity in the Rocky Mountains in the Late Pleistocene. Chapters survey the history of fieldwork at the site and compare and explain the various excavation procedures used; discuss the geology, taphonomic history, and geochronology of the site; analyze artifacts and other recovered materials; examine architectural elements; and compare the present and past environments of the Upper Gunnison Basin to gain insight into the setting in which Folsom groups were operating and the resources that were available to them. The Folsom archaeological record indicates far greater variability in adaptive behavior than previously recognized in traditional models. The Mountaineer Site shows how accounting for reduced mobility, more generalized subsistence patterns, and variability in tool manufacture and use allows for a richer and more accurate understanding of Folsom lifeways. It will be of great interest to graduate students and archaeologists focusing on Paleoindian archaeology, hunter-gatherer mobility, lithic technological organization, and prehistoric households, as well as prehistorians, anthropologists, and social scientists. This is the third volume of our series Progress in Anti-Cancer Chemo therapy. Following the strategy of the first two volumes, it covers selected aspects of progress in this fast moving field of Oncology, with contribu tions from some of the world's best known leaders in both basic and clin ical research. This year we focused on seven areas: Three prominent Clinical investigators reviewed conceptual advances in cancer research. Dr Buzdar presented a history and overview of the protection of human subjects who participate in clinical research, and the mechanisms developed to assure the ethical conduct of research on human beings. Frei reviewed an exciting and rapidly moving area of che motherapy of solid tumors, including a cogent discussion of the issues related to dose-intensification. Fisher summarized conceptual advances in our therapeutic approach to breast cancer and the paradigm shifts that lead us to our current management strategies. From this summary he pro jected breast cancer research into the future, a daunting task under any circumstance. Fundamental research in cancer biology has been responsible for our improved understanding of the development and progession of malignant disease. Such understanding will lead to improved diagnosis, therapy, and eventually, prevention. Isaacs reviews the area of hereditary breast cancer, a topic undergoing rapid transformation and with mUltiple impli cations in the daily practice of medicine. Fidler, an international expert in metastasis research reviews the potential utility of angiogenesis inhib itors in research and the therapeutic ramifications.

This book, which has only one very distant forerunner authored by David A. Hills with David Nowell, represents a very big step that is the quantification of these problems and represents the twenty-five years’ worth of work which have gone on at Oxford since the first book on the subject. Fatigue (popularly ‘metal fatigue’) is the primary failure mode of all machines, engines, transmissions and indeed almost all mechanical devices. The propagation of cracks is well understood and is treated in the subject Fracture Mechanics. By contrast, the nucleation of cracks is very hard to quantify and this remains the case with so-called ‘free initiation’ and, to a lesser extent, at cracks nucleated from stress raising features. But the third form of nucleation, where cracks start from the edges of rubbing components, that is, at joints, is potentially a very much better-defined environment, and therefore, the problem is amendable to attack by applied mechanics and experiment. The contents are of value both to those embarking on research on the subject and to practitioner in industry.
