I Like These: My Favorites from the First Two Decades: ESL MINICONFERENCE ONLINE
These 45 articles are like anchors in time thrown out into the deep by an author who decided in the days following 9-11 to memorialize the many ways that ESL/EFL professionals were responding to a direct attack at the heart and soul of institutions of cross-cultural understanding. In reading back through the ESL MiniConference articles, I have selected my favorites from among those that I composed myself. Perhaps you the reader will be able to use these to become familiar with the field of language teaching or to bring to mind events and ideas that have impacted a lifetime of learning from your own interactions with individuals from diverse heritages.
Social and Emotional Intelligence: New Thinking, New Choices in Life Coaching
Dr. Clare Steffen, The Founding and Executive Director of Coaching Choice College and CE4coaches explores social and emotional intelligence (SEI) from a multi-faceted model. This handbook allows life coaches and therapists to examine SEI and consider ways to utilize it with clients to improve their ability to create healthy relationships, make healthier life choices, and to develop a philosophy for living that is sustainable. The Cognitions of Choice (COC) developed by Dr. Steffen provides the client with the tools to learn about their thinking process and to better understand ways it is connected to how they manage and regulate emotions. The COC model is an approach to assist clients in understanding how to move automatic thoughts that can be unhealthy into a conscious choice that supports wellness. Through each step, the client can learn how to invite, investigate, and initiate new choice thinking. The integration of COC with SEI offers a way for coaches and therapist to utilize a variety of cognitive-behavioral approaches, and to teach the client how to connect to meta-thinking, and ultimately utilize mindfulness in their every day lives. The social and emotional intelligence (SEI) handbook is designed to assist life coaches and therapists in bringing a practical application of SEI to life coaching. Teach your clients how to develop the traits, skills, and abilities of SEI for practical application in everyday life. Ultimately, the clients can be taught these methods and will display an improved ability to identify, regulate, and manage their emotions in various relationships. Taking SEI from the conceptual to the practical is a way to assist clients in making the desired life changes and to create a new philosophy for living. Understanding how thinking, feeling, and behaviors impact underlying beliefs is crucial in changing old patterns of thoughts that fuel poor life choices. New thinking, New choices is the way to help your clients become the best version of themselves and to guide them to healthier living.

God has given us so many varieties of how He used His colors. It is okay to be different. The message cleverly delivers the importance of acceptance, understanding, tolerance of others and confidence in an accessible, child-friendly format. The book features the bold, bright colors of various animals and, of course, humans in their glorious colors. This book is written for the young at heart and the not so young at heart. People of all ages will be inspired to celebrate their individuality through acceptance of others and it's never too early or too late to examine ourselves and how we treat one another. Always remember that when you criticize or judge someone based on their skin color, the size of their nose, or the texture of their hair - you are criticizing God. God does not favor one color over another.
Strategic Learning and Retention the New Inclass/Virtual Cooperative Learning Model: The Panacea to Brain-Based Learning! Culturally Responsive Practi
My philosophy as an educator is that all students have the capacity to be successful given the appropriate learning environment. During your reading, you will notice that great emphasis is placed on activities that include the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains. I am a proponent of new research-based strategies and very much aware of the brain-based and cooperative learning approach. It is important for students to make connections to prior learning before they are introduced to new concepts. This will strengthen the cognitive connections in their brains. In this book, readers will learn - Cooperative learning teaches a number of social and emotional skills, but it also gives students the opportunity to learn from each other. - Our studies have shown that peer learning in which students explain concepts and ideas to each other has the potential to improve comprehension considerably. - Cooperative learning produces critical experiences that other learning structures cannot. - The best learning occurs when students are actively engaged in the learning process and working in collaboration with other students to accomplish a shared goal. - In a recent survey, 47 percent of drop-outs in USA stated that they dropped out of school because their classes were not interesting but boring; 43 percent stated that they missed too many days to catch up; 69 percent stated that they weren't motivated enough; - Each year, approximately 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States. That's a student every 26 seconds or 7,000 a day. - The link between a poor education and incarceration is borne out in data. Dropouts are 3.5 times more likely to be arrested than high school graduates. Nationally, 68 percent of all males in prison do not have a high school diploma. - Of The 2 million people in American prisons, 50% are African Americans. America has 1/20th of the world's population but of the world's prisoners. - Why pay almost seven times the amount for juvenile detention as we do to educate our youth? We know what it takes to educate students well, and the cost is substantially lower than the cost of prison - Boys begin their early years as tactile and kinesthetic learners. They are also primarily visual, spatial and experiential learners. I am a proponent of results-driven leadership. I believe in creating systems and structures to ensure success. It is important to cultivate talented and diverse educators while providing high quality leadership professional development. My objective is to make a difference in the lives of educators.Too many of our students are dropping out of schools. A large number of teachers are reaching out for support in creating intellectually engaging lessons. Learning is about cooperation and not competition. There has to be positive interdependence among students. There is a need in society for folks to be able to think and work together. Teachers need urgent and differentiated support in teaching our students to construct their learning. Students are excited when the work is authentic in nature. The emphasis should be placed on the concept of constructivism where students are able to connect their prior knowledge to new knowledge. Therefore, it is important that our teachers are knowledgeable about their students to ensure adequate planning for instruction. I was inspired to write this book due to the low performance and poor strategic approach which results in low attendance rate in schools. Many of our students are misunderstood. It is imminent that teachers receive ongoing support in understanding the learning styles of males and females. Teachers need ongoing strategies to ensure that our students are intellectually engaged. There is a lack of equity and access in the classroom. Teachers need support in creating engaging research-based learning activities.

"If, like some, you regret that Montessori too rarely in her writings appreciated the humanity of teachers-their creativity, their curiosity, their doubts-this book stands as the perfect complement."-Jola-Montessori.com Evocative and unique, The Tao of Montessori offers a quiet balance to the noisy demands of teaching and parenting through a special blend of encouraging verse. Award-winning Montessori teacher Catherine McTamaney revisits the eighty-one verses of Lao-tzu's Tao Te Ching and relates them to the life and work of teachers, parents, and children. Originally meant to remind rather than direct and to show the way toward natural harmony in the world around and within us, Lao-tzu's verses find a new meaning through McTamaney's skillful mixture of spirituality and education. Take a moment to read a single stanza, then put it aside and muse upon its meaning. By revisiting one verse each day, you can relate its images to your life as a teacher, parent, or child. Whether you are familiar with the writings of Lao-tzu or are simply ready to explore a refreshingly contemplative perspective on children and teachers, The Tao of Montessori is a profound work of intellectual stimulation.

SLAVE SCHOOLS WHY ARE BLACK STUDENTS HELD IN BONDAGE OF FAILING (SLAVE) SCHOOLS? Abstract This book is unique because it's two books in one: Pt I includes all minorities to 2012; Pt II concentrates on black issues between 2012 to 2024 encompassing the racial agenda known as Critical Race Theory based on past slavery. However, it omits white slavery that started sooner, lasted longer and it was cheaper to buy white slaves than black slaves. More striking is that absolutely no mention is made of present-day bondage-slavery--where blacks are required by law to attend failing City Schools. Although there have been national and state reforms to close the achievement gap between blacks and whites none had succeeded. Among the efforts to do so is to eliminate meritocracy-measurements-and without testing there is no gap to measure. Another effort is simply to lower standards which 37 states have done. Furthermore, to hide the problem is introducing a major disruptor that does nothing to improve academic achievement such as the racial agenda that is causing money woes, chaos and conflict among parents and school officials. In its extreme form the concept is infused in every school subject K-12 requiring indoctrination rather than education. That's the real issue causing the conflict. The problem is vividly illustrated with on the 2022 NAEP results with 75% of students below proficiency in math and 67% below in reading with blacks at 16%. Then followed by test two states, the Connecticut Enigma; and the simple solution with the Mississippi Miracle. Very important is a step-by-step approach to show what blacks can do to bring pressure on school officials and school boards to close or turnaround failing schools by kneeling and striking. When all else fails, then do the school board nightmare.
