Cornelio Fabro’s writings on Edith Stein elucidate Fabro’s understanding of Stein’s contemporary relevance to philosophical debates about the relationship between Thomism and Phenomenology. For the first time in the English Language, Joshua Furnal brings together a selection of works that are representative of Cornelio Fabro’s perspective on Edith Stein, offering a distinctive yet overlooked contribution to Steinian literature. Furnal begins, in the introduction, by exploring the impact of Edith Stein’s writings on Fabro’s stance toward the phenomenological tradition. Fabro’s engagement with phenomenology first surfaced in 1941 when he published two books simultaneously: Perception and Thought and The Phenomenology of Perception. Subsequently, his engagement with Stein’s philosophical writings first appeared in publications from 1949 to 1951, and then again in 1969, 1978, and 1989 in relation to her canonization process. Fabro’s significance to Stein studies is due not only to his involvement in writing the dossier that facilitated her canonization process at the Vatican, but also to his appreciation for her existential approach to the relationship between faith and reason—which led her to martyrdom. As a Thomist and priest, Fabro viewed Stein as an important philosopher in her own right and saw an important link between his own Stigmatine background and Stein’s spirituality. This translation introduces Fabro’s understanding of Stein’s philosophy and sainthood and the broader issues that converge at the intersection of their thought.
Pastoral Cosmopolitanism in Edith Wharton’s Fiction
American novelist Edith Wharton (1862–1937) is best known today for her tales of the city and the experiences of patrician New Yorkers in the “Gilded Age.” This book pushes against the grain of critical orthodoxy by prioritizing other “species of spaces” in Wharton’s work. For example, how do Wharton’s narratives represent the organic profusion of external nature? Does the current scholarly fascination with the environmental humanities reveal previously unexamined or overlooked facets of Wharton’s craft? I propose that what is most striking about her narrative practice is how she utilizes, adapts, and translates pastoral tropes, conventions, and concerns to twentieth-century American actualities. It is no accident that Wharton portrays characters returning to, or exploring, various natural localities, such as private gardens, public parks, chic mountain resorts, monumental ruins, or country-estate “follies.” Such encounters and adventures prompt us to imagine new relationships with various geographies and the lifeforms that can be found there. The book addresses a knowledge gap in Wharton and the environmental humanities, especially recent debates in ecocriticism. The excavation of Wharton's words and the background of her narratives with an eye to offering an ecocritical reading of her work is what the book focuses on.

This volume contains 189 hitherto unpublished letters by Edwin Arlington Robinson. They were written between 1897 and 1930 to one of his first admirers, Edith Brower of Pennsylvania. The letters begin when the twenty-seven-year-old poet writes gratefully to the stranger who has expressed appreciation of his first, privately printed, book of poems, The Torrent and the Night Before. Soon he was carrying on an intense correspondence, baring his soul—safely, he believed, because the woman he described as “infernally bright and not at all ugly,” with “something of a literary reputation,” was “too old to give me a chance to bother myself with any sentimental uneasiness.” (She was twenty-one years his senior.)Continually reflecting his laconic, self-deprecating Yankee spirit, the letters range from the uncontrollable outpourings of a lonely individual, desperate for encouragement and understanding, to brief words of greeting or farewell. Without reserve, Robinson—who was eventually awarded the Pulitzer prize for poetry three times—confides his reactions to people and places, his thoughts about his own work, and his personal opinions of such writers as Browning, Dickens, Hardy, Moody, and Pater.Mr. Cary has included Miss Brower’s unpublished memoir on the poet’s character and literary career, “Memories of Edwin Arlington Robinson,” and her penetrating review of The Children of the Night. In addition to an informative Introduction, he contributes full explanatory notes, a list of Robinson’s works, and an index.

The year is 1929 and Pulitzer-Prize winning novelist Willa Cather and her partner Edith Lewis are summering on Grand Manan, an island in the Bay of Fundy. In their cottage's sparsely-furnished attic room, Cather is at work writing ''Shadows on the Rock,'' her tenth novel. Relaxing after a hectic winter of working at a New York City ad agency, J. Walter Thompson, Edith is painting watercolors from the cliffs hundred feet above the rising tides of Whale Cove. Out of the corner of her eye, Edith sees a body plunge from the edge of a cliff to the rocks below... Solving the mystery, first-time novelist Sue Hallgarth's intimate view of village politics and the goings-on of two women's communities long lost to history is also a suspenseful and surprising crime novel.
