Louisa May Alcott

Applewood Books
2005
sidottu
A collection of illustrated fairy stories from Louisa May Alcott--the author who brought us Little Women. Originally published in 1854, this collection of fables was inspired by Louisa's time spent in the woods around Walden Pond--a spot endearingly named Fairyland by Walden's own Henry David Thoreau. Young Louisa collected these fairy fables into a volume dedicated to her friend Ellen Emerson, the daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson. This volume--published under the title, Flower Fables--was Louisa's first published book. Published to commemorate the 150th anniversary of its first publication, this elegant hardback edition is a perfect gift for any aged reader.

David Henry Hwang

In 1958, it was daring to stage a Broadway musical about romances between Asian men and women in San Francisco's Chinatown. It was filmed in 1961 and reached an even wider audience before dropping off the cultural radar. Nearly thirty years later, the well-established Asian-American writer David Henry Hwang decided to revisit the show and give it a more modern sense of authenticity. The updated and revitalised show opened in Los Angeles in 2001 and returned in triumph to Broadway in 2002. 'To create something new, we must first love what is old.' So says a character in David Henry Hwang's updated book to Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical. This volume contains Hwang's new text (and Hammerstein's lyrics) plus Hwang's introduction and an afterward by Karen Wada documenting the long and vital history of this landmark musical.

Amy Stewart

Algonquin Books
2008
nidottu
Award-winning author Amy Stewart takes readers on an around-the-world, behind-the-scenes look at the flower industry and how it has sought--for better or worse--to achieve perfection. She tracks down the hybridizers, geneticists, farmers, and florists working to invent, manufacture, and sell flowers that are bigger, brighter, and sturdier than anything nature can provide. There's a scientist intent on developing the first genetically modified blue rose; an eccentric horitcultural legend who created the most popular lily; a breeder of gerberas of every color imaginable; and an Ecuadorean farmer growing exquisite roses, the floral equivalent of a Tiffany diamond. And, at every turn she discovers the startling intersection of nature and technology, of sentiment and commerce.
Flower Swallows Sing: A North Korean Memoir in Verse

Flower Swallows Sing: A North Korean Memoir in Verse

Imu Baek

HOLLYM INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION
2020
nidottu
Poems from a North Korean defector While Western media usually focuses its attention on the enigmatic dictator of North Korea, Flower Swallows Sing is a North Korean memoir in verse that focuses on the humanity and agency of the North Korean people. This collection of poems by Imu Baek is a powerful portrayal of everyday life for the citizens trying to endure North Korea's oppressive regime. How do they survive starvation, homelessness and imprisonment? How do they escape and live in exile in another country? While much of the literature translated from North Korea emanates from the elite class, this work offers a unique insight into the collective suffering of North Korea's poorest and most vulnerable populations. Parents and grandparents sacrifice themselves so the children can eat. Children wander the streets as orphans. Writing pseudonymously as a defector living in exile, Baek's voice has emerged on the world stage as a reverberating condemnation of the violence inflicted upon North Korea's most defenseless population. This translation is an effort to make Baek's story available to English readers and hopefully, in doing so, continues her project of denouncing the violence of fascism in all of its forms.

Everyone loves flowers. We grow them with a passion and crave helpful advice on nurturing them in our gardens. A great, friendly, indispensable book, THE FLOWER GARDENER'S BIBLE is written with wit and authority by Lewis and Nancy Hill, who share both their joy in growing flowers and more than 75 years of combined experience. In the same format as the very successful The Vegetable Gardener's Bible, this new primer is both painstakingly thorough and stunningly photographed. It covers every facet of growing perennials, annuals, bulbs, wildflowers, small trees, vines, and shrubs for season-long colour and beauty. It is organized in three sections, and the first focuses on the basics - choosing the right varieties for your zone and type of garden, and planning and planting for maximum impact. The second section presents plans for 25 distinctively themed gardens. And finally, a photographic encyclopaedia of more than 400 species includes detailed descriptions of each plant - garden uses, susceptibility to pests and diseases, propagation methods, and more.

Lewis Miller

Monacelli Press
2021
sidottu
From Lewis Miller, the celebrated floral designer and "Flower Bandit" himself, an intimate and joyous behind-the-scenes look at his signature Flower Flashes as they introduced bright moments of natural beauty into the city when they were needed most. Before dawn one morning in October 2016, renowned New York-based floral designer Lewis Miller stealthily arranged hundreds of brightly colored dahlias, carnations, and mums into a psychedelic halo around the John Lennon memorial in Central Park. The spontaneous floral installation was Miller's gift to the city-an effort to spark joy during a difficult time. Nearly five years and more than ninety Flower Flashes later, these elaborate flower bombs-bursts of jubilant blooms in trash cans, over bus canopies, on construction sites and traffic medians-have brought moments of delight and wonder to countless New Yorkers and flower lovers everywhere, and earned Miller a following of dedicated fans and the nickname the "Flower Bandit." After New York City entered lockdown, Miller doubled down, creating Flower Flashes outside hospitals to express gratitude to frontline health workers and throughout the city to raise spirits. This gorgeous and poignant visual diary traces the phenomenon from the first, spontaneous Flower Flash to the even more profound installations of the pandemic through a kaleidoscopic collage of photos documenting the Flower Flashes, behind-the-scenes snapshots, Miller's inspiration material, fan contributions, and more.
