Civil Rights Journey

Civil Rights Journey

Civil Rights Journey recounts the coming of age of a young man shaped early by the crucibles of polio and segregation (both by decree and by custom) and later by that of the civil rights movement. Joe Howell's story depicts the effects of human vulnerability and of human cruelty. The lingering effects of polio made him at times the object of bullying and derision, perhaps thus increasing his sensitivity to such cruelties manifested in the system of segregation. The reader shares the hopes, doubts, and at times despair that form Joe as he tries to wrest meaning from his experiences and determine what his path in life should be. Civil Rights Journey offers the reader a multilayered account of a young man born in the pre-civil rights South, sheltered by a code of customs that privileged the white middle class at the expense of blacks and poor whites, and of his formation and moral development shaped by his civil rights journey. (From the foreword by Janet Hampton)Joseph Howell has written a remarkable memoir. He takes us on a journey to rural Georgia at the height of the civil rights movement and the rise of black power. His account of his struggles to work with black activists to make change in communities deeply marred by entrenched issues of racism and social injustice is honest and passionate. Through Howell's fresh and complex narrative, we come to a rich understanding of the vital role white people can play in racial justice movements and the complex terrain they enter as they struggle to build new kinds of relationships with black activists and with "regular folks." These issues remain compelling today and contemporary readers will be profoundly moved as they accompany Howell through his struggles to make sense of the world and of his life in a time of historic racial change. Mark R. WarrenHarvard UniversityAuthor of Fire in the Heart: How White Activists Embrace Racial JusticeCivil Rights Journey by Joseph Howell is a truly wonderful piece of writing. Joe Howell's personal story in the first section of the book is deeply moving and provides a beautiful frame for their Albany journal. As the Howells work with black SNCC workers in Albany, Georgia, they offer the reader a rare view of the civil rights movement during this important time. His powerful, honest book will be read and loved by many.William FerrisUniversity of North CarolinaFormer chair, National Endowment for the Humanities

The novel As a Matter of Fate follows the narrator Deirdre Grady through a childhood of protected innocence where she is taught to believe in a world ruled by absolutes. Her happiness is built upon the certainty that all things happen for a reason and that everything in life serves a distinct purpose. Deirdre's childhood is filled with the melody of her grandmother's crooning wisdom and the teasing laughter of a cow-licked blonde haired boy named Caleb. As Deirdre matures and her feelings for Caleb evolve into adolescent love, she relies on her na ve interpretation of fate to conjure a future where she and Caleb are destined to be together, regardless of the fact that he chooses to leave Deirdre and the small town of Aviemore, Georgia behind him after high school. When Deirdre suddenly loses everything that provided the security of her youth, she finds herself lost in a world that has become foreign and unkind. It is in this world that she forms an unlikely friendship with Julia Alliston, the beautiful, self absorbed daughter of one of the wealthier more distinguished families in town. These two characters are seemingly polar opposites who share a relationship that often crosses into a realm of darkness in which they can only grope their way out with the help of each other. They ride a roller coaster of extremes where loyalty is balanced by fierce bouts of jealousy, and love is held in check by a stronger ability to hate. Ultimately it is betrayal that brings the novel and its complex characters to a point of crisis. In the resolution of this crisis, all innocence is stripped away to reveal the bud of an ugly truth: within the deepest part of every person lies a darkness that allows them to be capable of doing anything.
Picturing the 'Pregnant' Magdalene in Northern Art, 1430-1550
Examining innovations in Mary Magdalene imagery in northern art 1430 to 1550, Penny Jolly explores how the saint’s widespread popularity drew upon her ability to embody oppositions and embrace a range of paradoxical roles: sinner-prostitute and saint, erotic seductress and holy prophet. Analyzing paintings by Rogier van der Weyden, Quentin Massys, and others, Jolly investigates artists’ and audiences’ responses to increasing religious tensions, expanding art markets, and changing roles for women. Using cultural ideas concerning the gendered and pregnant body, Jolly reveals how dress confirms the Magdalene’s multivalent nature. In some paintings, her gown’s opening laces betray her wantonness yet simultaneously mark her as Christ’s spiritually pregnant Bride; elsewhere ’undress’ reconfirms her erotic nature while paradoxically marking her penitence; in still other works, exotic finery expresses her sanctity while celebrating Antwerp’s textile industry. New image types arise, as when the saint appears as a lovesick musician playing a lute or as a melancholic contemplative, longing for Christ. Some depictions emphasize her intercessory role through innovative pictorial strategies that invite performative viewing or relate her to the mythological Pandora and Italian Renaissance Neoplatonism. Throughout, the Magdalene’s ambiguities destabilize readings of her imagery while engaging audiences across a broad social and religious spectrum.

Part history, part memoir, part statistical analysis, this book tells the remarkable and largely forgotten story of how the baseball hotbed of Canada's northeastern Maritime provinces evolved into "NCAA North" during the 1940s and 1950s. A summer training ground for players from leading U.S. college programs, the region attracted talented players seeking higher salaries than they could get in the American minor league system. Major league organizations came to scout blue-chip prospects. In this competitive environment, only the best were able to crack the rosters of town teams in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Maine. A Quality of Competition Index for various northeast leagues provides major league equivalencies for selected players.

Welcome to Howell's Healing Hands Hospital Let Ezekeliah, head greeter and manikin extraordinaire, take you on a personal tour of the Nursing Skills Lab at Healing Hands Hospital-with detailed stories about the "patients" we treat and the simulations we use in our nursing school program. This book is the result of many tries, failures, and fine-tuning to create scenarios that utilize best practices and a safe, enjoyable environment for nursing school students. Studies show that when a learning environment incorporates laughter, students report higher satisfaction, engagement, retention, and understanding. Ezekeliah Goes to Nursing School is a lighthearted look at the very serious work we do here-creating a knowledgeable, caring nursing team with a healthy dose of humor
