Travel to Mars - on a one-way ticket? "I would go, but where would I find tonic water on Mars?" was Jack's initial response. Logistics resolved, his life in the Outpost on Mars centers around tending his vegetable garden and playing simulated golf on the state of the art entertainment system. This tranquil scientific assignment changes when budget cuts create new alliances and foreign space agencies start sending their own Martian explorers. The author began writing Jack's Outpost, when she received a newspaper article from the Houston Chronicle on one-way missions to Mars from her Uncle Jack Morledge. Who in real life is a 90-year-old retired NASA employee. She sent him the first chapter and Jack responded with storyline and technical suggestions. Over a period of two years, this book was created in this way.

Childhood Drama - Jack lived in constant fear of two bullies at his school, though he could tell no one about them. When he could no longer hide their beatings from his mother, and the court system turned the two boys loose, Clarissa decided to send her son away to live in rural Texas with his Uncle Kevin. Uncle Kevin, a widower, had never had any children of his own and knew very little about how to help Jack out, but they discovered they needed each other. Uncle Kevin used the work and life required of a farmer to teach Jack valuable life lessons. As Jack grew physically and spiritually stronger, he learned how to deal with bullies as he struggled to defend the farm animals from a menacing hawk.

Jack Tar's Story examines the autobiographies and memoirs of antebellum American sailors to explore contested meanings of manhood and nationalism in the early republic. It is the first study to use various kinds of institutional sources, including crew lists, ships' logs, impressment records, to document the stories sailors told. It focuses on how mariner authors remembered/interpreted various events and experiences, including the War of 1812, the Haitian Revolution, South America's wars of independence, British impressment, flogging on the high seas, roistering, and religious conversion. This book straddles different fields of scholarship and suggests how their concerns intersect or resonate with each other: the history of print culture, the study of autobiographical writing, and the historiography of seafaring life and of masculinity in antebellum America.
