Borges On WritingIn 1971, Jorge Luis Borges was invited to preside over a series of seminars on his writing at Columbia University. This book is a record of those seminars, which took the form of informal discussions between Borges, Norman Thomas di Giovanni--his editor and translator, Frank MacShane--then head of the writing program at Columbia, and the students. Borges's prose, poetry, and translations are handled separately and the book is divided accordingly. The prose seminar is based on a line-by-line discussion of one of Borges's most distinctive stories, "The End of the Duel." Borges explains how he wrote the story, his use of local knowledge, and his characteristic method of relating violent events in a precise and ironic way. This close analysis of his methods produces some illuminating observations on the role of the writer and the function of literature. The poetry section begins with some general remarks by Borges on the need for form and structure and moves into a revealing analysis of four of his poems. The final section, on translation, is an exciting discussion of how the art and culture of one country can be "translated" into the language of another. This book is a tribute to the brilliant craftsmanship of one of South America's--indeed, the world's--most distinguished writers and provides valuable insight into his inspiration and his method.

An Americas Award Commended Title Raw, honest and powerful, these moving bilingual poems by noted Salvadoran poet Jorge Argueta explore a young Indigenous boy's connection to Mother Earth and how he is healed from the terrible wounds of racism he has endured. Tetl has learned from his grandmother about the spirituality of his ancestors, about how they viewed the earth as alive with sacred meaning. This helps him move from doubt and fear, created by the taunts of other children, to self-acceptance and a discovery of his love for nature. Mountains, wind, corn and stones all speak to Tetl, almost seeming to vibrate with life. He feels deep roots in them and, through them, he learns to speak and sing. They reveal his Nahuatl self and he realizes that he is special, beautiful and sacred. These gripping poems have something to teach us all, perhaps especially those who have been either intentionally or casually cruel or racist, as well as those who have been the victims of racism.

When award-winning poet Jorge Lujan wrote to children all over Latin America asking them about their pets, he received many funny, interesting and touching replies. The children described all kinds of pets -- not only dogs, cats and rabbits, but turtles, parakeets and even a marmot. They wrote about what their pets looked like, the amusing things that they did, what they were like when they first got them and why they loved them so much. Inspired by these letters, Jorge shaped the children's thoughts and feelings into this wonderful book -- a perfect first collection of poems for young readers.

Young Jorgito has come to live in the Mission District of San Francisco, but he hasn't forgotten the unique beauty of El Salvador. In his first collection of poems for children, poet Jorge Argueta evokes the wonder of his childhood in rural El Salvador, a touching relationship with a caring father, and his confusion and delight in his new urban home. We glimpse the richness of Jorgito's inner world and dreams--the movie in his pillow. Artist Elizabeth Gomez perfectly captures the indigenous beauty of El Salvador, the sadness of the war, and the joy of family reunion in San Francisco. Her paintings, with their brilliant colors and striking details, fill every page with authenticity and charm.

Miles away from their home in El Salvador, Xochitl (SOH-cheel) and her family make a new home in the United States, but nothing is the same. Xochitl mourns a lovely garden and her family's small flower business, all left behind. Selling flowers on the street soon provides more than income for the Flores family: they begin to make friends with local storeowners and neighbors. But it is not until the family decides to start a nursery in its backyard that Xochitl begins to learn the true value of community in their adopted country. Basing his narrative on real-life events, prize-winning poet Jorge Argueta has crafted a tender, poetic, and moving story about a family's determination to set down roots and about their child's blooming among friends and neighbors. Artist Carl Angel's authentic and brilliant artwork splendidly documents this quintessentially American immigration story.

Optimization Software Guide

Developments in optimization theory, including emphasis on large problems and on interior-point methods for linear programming, have begun to appear in production software. Here is a reference tool that includes discussions of these areas and names software packages that incorporate the results of theoretical research. After an introduction to the major problem areas in optimization and an outline of the algorithms used to solve them, a data sheet is presented for each of the 75 software packages and libraries in the authors' survey. These include information on the capabilities of the packages, how to obtain them, and addresses for further information. Standard optimization paradigms are addressed - linear, quadratic, and nonlinear programming; network optimization; unconstrained and bound-constrained optimization; least-squares problems; nonlinear equations; and integer programming. The most practical algorithms for the major fields of numerical optimization are outlined, and the software packages in which they are implemented are described. This format will aid current and potential users of optimization software in classifying the optimization problem to be solved, determining appropriate algorithms, and obtaining the software that implements those algorithms. Readers need only a basic knowledge of vector calculus and linear algebra to understand this book.

Why would a good God allow so much suffering? Why doesn't God take away our pain? Some say he allows it. Others call it punishment. Still others dare to name it a gift. But what is the truth--and how do we live under the weight of suffering that seems senseless, tragic, or cruel? In a world marked by natural disasters, devastating illness, war, abuse, and untimely death, many wonder why an all-powerful, loving God wouldn't simply make a better world. Couldn't he have prevented it all? With clarity, compassion, and the depth of Catholic tradition, the author invites readers into the heart of the Church's wisdom on human suffering, an age-old mystery that touches every life. This book explores: The nature of evil and why God permits it Whether suffering has meaning--and if so, what might that be How Jesus transforms pain from within What it means to believe in a God of joy in a world of sorrow Whether you are struggling personally or seeking to understand the suffering of others, this book offers a faithful, honest, and hope-filled perspective for those who dare to ask: Why?
In Spite of the Dark Silence

In Spite of the Dark Silence

Jorge Volpi

'He was named Jorge, like me, and for this his life hurts me twice.' So writes Jorge Volpi in this highly original novel that presents a biographical perspective on the tragic life of the poet and chemist Jorge Cuesta. Cuesta was one of the founders of Los Contemporaneos, an influential twentieth-century literary movement. The poetic voice of Cuesta's verses can be heard throughout, offering insights into the creative and destructive forces and impulses in his work that eventually led to a mental ward - and a shocking suicide at thirty-eight. The fictional 'Jorge', as narrator, embarks on an obsessive quest to understand the life of the long-dead poet, with the distance between subject and researcher blurring as he finds himself struggling to understand his own life. It is a brave search for anyone willing to gaze into the mirror of mortality 'in spite of the dark silence.'
